Back to school nights were very disappointing last year. I saw very few parents attend. The programs were strong, but suffered because the school was going through transition, following a school within a school model. This caused a shortage of text books and made it difficult for students to get the classes they needed to meet graduation requirements. Stable adminstration support is definitely needed; the school is literally being held up by the teachers who seem to be doing everything, but who should be given less outside classroom responsibility so that they can focus on their jobs, teaching. A new principal is now in charge (Go Ted!). Hopefully, some of the burden will come off the teachers and a system will develop that will allow the teachers to focus on teaching just a few class subjects and not 3 or 4 a day.
This high school is on the move in the right direction. The new principal is a visionary man with integrity and a respet for the multicultural community we live in. Students exhibit pride in their academics, athletics and clubs. The evolution of small learning communities allows my son to have a close knit group of teachers and counselors working with us to make sure he is prepared for college and beyond. Increased exposure to athletics, music, poetry, dance, art, SAT prep, etc. courses has created a well rounded campus. Decrease in discipline issues and low self esteem is allowing students to progress at a rapid rate and feel safe in school. Our choice to keep our children in our local school was the right one.
Luther Burbank is making dramatic changes which are well needed. The once disgusting restrooms have been remodeled, there are more classrooms, and the new billboard is rather attractive. The next thing that needs to be improved is the football field and the track. The track is in terrible condition. There are some teachers who try thier best to give students a memorable high school experience as well as a good education. I attended this school for two years and I had those good teachers. On the other hand some teachers were just there for a paycheck and didnt care if thier students learned anything of if they passed thier class. The principal should be replaced immediately! It seems as if he dosent know how to deal with teenagers. Although it has come a long way it still needs a lot of work.
I graduated from Burbank in 2002. My experience there wasn't the best compared to other high schools I've attended. However the students were full of school spirit and the teachers were always there after hours to help me as well as other students with curicular activities. Yes, the principal was very insensitive but the teachers were inspirational and commited. Thank You Ms. Watts, Mrs. Sikes-Perkins and Mr. Hopsen. From Emanuel Davis C/O 2002
This is not a bad school at all. There have been rumors from the past still haunting the school today. Having two daughters that go there now if I thought the school was to unsafe I would not have enrolled them at LBHS. I think that burbank is getting better as time progresses. I think that the staff is very concerned with its students adn trying very hard to help them. I also like the enviorment of different cultures surrounding the school and not just a main one. I think it is one of the best schools in the SCUSD.
Would not recomend sending any students here. Not enough books for students. Books they do have are old and some are torn! They should replace principal. He is hard to deal with! Graduation rate is low a small percentage of students go to four year colleges.
This is the worst school! Why are we paying tax dollars to a school that doesn't even teach? I'm not even sure if it should be called a school!
Three of my children have attended this school. The multicultural environment is a great experience for each student in that campus. Two of my daughters have graduated and have never regreted entering this prestigious school. Old rumors have fogged the reputation of this school, rumors which are not at all true, it is genuinely a great school.
My daughter just graduated in 2003 and my son is a Sophomore at LBHS. Both have had a great experience and have many fond memories of high school. Our family has enjoyed the integration of cultures and levels of respect and acceptance for all people there. Teachers are genuninely concerned about student success and frequently phone our home to update us on needs and triumphs. The administration is dedicated to creating a safe environment. Parents are welcome on the campus and invited to participate in parent council assisting to make decisions on the direction of the school. The school is 40 years old and in the process of being modernized. I feel it is a hidden gem in the SCUSD and the best choice for high school in this area.
This is the worst school in the SCUSD. It is staffed with the worst Principal in the district. The students are treated like prison inmates. The Principal has had numerous complaints filed against him. The Governing Board is aware of how he mistreats students as well as how unprofessional he can be with parents. The best thing that can happen to Luther Burbank High School is closure.
