Love the family feel at the school. However if your child has an IEP do not go here. Some teachers are better than others but many seem unorganized and just plain tried; especially the fourth grade teacher.
What drew me to John Muir was the Paideia philosophy which aims to build global citizens who love learning and enjoy a good life. My son often does projects with other grades and is learning to speak and socialize with a wide variety of people. The parents are friendly and there is a real sense of community on campus. It has been a great experience for our entire household.
My school is...a continuation of my family. John Muir School has been a part of my life since 1995 when I enrolled my oldest child there. Since then I have had two other children and several nieces, nephews and neighbors find their places at John Muir. The cohesiveness of the Teachers and Administrative Staff, many of whom have been at John Muir since it's beginnings, make this schools focus the children. This attribute paired with the formation of the John Muir Association of Parents (JMAP) in 2009 has enabled our school to bring in fun and educational programs for the students. It's family atmosphere, "Global Citizenship" theme and Paideia trained teachers make this school is one of the hidden gems of our district.
Muir is a small community based k-12 school. Many of the students started out in K , and plan to graduate. Wile it is a community, there is plenty of room to add more students. When my daughter and I came to the school 2 yrs ago as 2nd graders. We were welcomed by both the facility and parents with open arms. Everything in the school has a family feel. Parents help out on the campus.
We love John Muir!!! Our oldest son has been attending Muir since he was in Kindergarten. He is now going into the 5th grade. We have loved all the teachers, small class sizes and the family atmosphere that the school has to offer. Our second child will be starting school there this year and then our youngest will follow suit. I love that we have the option of all our kids attending the same school!! The programs are wonderful and they are only getting better!!! The school has been nothing but amazing for us.
I love the diversityat the school. Kids learn about being a citizen of the world not just our city. Teachers are phenomenal!!
I love John Muir School because of the small community atmosphere where everyone knows each other. I am a very involved parent and really like that new ideas and programs suggested by parents are welcomed. I like the Schoolwide K-12 Paideia Seminars and field trips. Areas that our school can work on: better parent involvement, a better college going atmosphere.
My son has been at John Muir for one year and we love it! We have found an environment where parents are involved and form a nurturing community. His teacher challenged him and his classmates and was also able to provide individual attention to them. As parents we want our son to be in an environment with culturally aware people and John Muir is definitively this kind of community. Also, the school is focused in forming global citizens. The school would benefit if it provided as part of the curriculum a Spanish class to all students.
The small intimate feel of this school is wonderful. The small class size and interaction between upper grades and lower grades is much better organized and monitored than in traditional schools. I love that my kindergarten kid knows the Senior class president, has done crafts with his 7th grade friends, reads with his 5th grade friends, and sings songs with 2nd grade friends all with supervision by teachers! And when my child is older, they'll appreciate the influence they'll have on the younger kids!
This school should be K-8, it simply does not have the resources to provide high schoolers with the opportunities that they can get elsewhere. Most of the reviews here gush about the elementary grades K-6, but starting in 7th grade there is an exodus of the best students to other schools with better facilities, leaving behind some very un-motivated kids in the upper grades. This is a real shame given the dedication of the teachers, the "small school" community atmosphere, and the 8:50am start which is better suited to adolescents' body clocks than the "farmers' hours" kept by most urban high schools. Parent involvement in the lower grades is great, but since most of the upper grade kids are bussed in, it is very rare to see their parents at all. Finally, much is made of the Paedia (?) philosophy of the school and the seminars conducted, but from what I saw this method of peer discussion was wasted on students who could barely comprehend the assigned readings, leaving them behind while boring the brighter students who had already "got it".
This school has made a tremendous difference for our son. He attended another public school for Kinder and 1st and he did not like school, was bored and unengaged. His 2nd grade experience at Muir is totally different. He has bloomed academically, enjoys the schools vast enrichment environment, LOVES his teacher Ms. Sorini, and is accountable and engaged with his work. The principal really sets a great tone for the school environment and the parent group provides great enrichment for the students without being too over the top. Muir is a gem in San Diego and probably the best kept secret too! The teaching methods are really great at encouraging kids to use critical thinking skills and be solution makers. I also appreciate that there is real PE classes for the kids as healthy living is such an important component for today's kids to learn about and respect.
this will be our 4th year attending John Muir and we have appreciated the close community feel it brings.. though a magnet.. the students really connect and are able to create wonderful friendships. A large Girl Scout population is here as well. As is all parents worried about budget cuts I am hopeful that this little school continues to thrive. As part of the parent teacher connection Jmap I have met and worked with some wonderful creative and smart parents who all have the schools best interest at heart. Looking forward to the new school year!
We love this K-12 as it offers our kids a very controlled environment to learn in. We have had great luck with all of our teachers thus far. Each of them places the children's well-being and learning above all else. You can tell that they are all passionate about being teachers. We are also very lucky to have a great Principal in Nancy Johnson. Same as the teachers, the passion is there. It is very important for the parents to continue to be involved. Every little bit of extra funding that we can provide helps. We do this through our parent group, JMAP. A great school. We love it.
This is my thrid year at John Muir and I have found it to be the perfect match to what my family is looking for. My child has been able to learn and grow in a close family-like community. With the budgets the way they are-- all schools are loosing out on things, but I think our school is doing a good job at staying focused on our children and their futures. I also love being able to be involved with the parent group that is not pretentious and there is something for everyone. The school, staff, teachers, parent group- all believe being involved is very important. Yay- John Muir- you are growing into a mighty fine school !
John Muir is a unique and great example of a very good school which fosters a feeling of a tight community. Our principal, Nancy, is a wonderful administrator and leader who keeps focused on what is the most important part of any school - the students. The small school population creates a very supportive interage community which isn't duplicated anywhere elese in San Diego. Also, as my child says, the school is very much known for encouraging good citizenship which is what makes it such a good home and place like an extended family. The teachers and staff are very good: Ms. Anne in the library is fantastic; Ms. Stacey improves our science program every year; Ms. Joy and Ms. Crawford have both been great grade six teachers and I'm looking forward to the talents of the higher grade teachers in the coming years. JMAP is one of the most involved, passionate and warm parent groups that I have every met. Every year they raise the bar on fund raising and enhancing programs and the school environment (the gardens and landscaping is a beautiful work in progress) for our students. I look forward to the positiive growth and changes in our school in the years ahead.
Muir is a place where friends and family can be made and education can be appreciated.
This is the second year in a row that my children have said, 'I can't believe the school year is almost over, it feels like it just started.' At other schools, there was always a painful count-down-of-days-left as soon as they returned from winter break. The K-12 structure, along with the smaller student body, give the school a calmer, safer atmosphere. Ms. Stacy (5th grade), Ms. Joy (6th grade), Ms. Caron (HS French/Spanish), and Ms. Anne (Librarian), should all be commended for their personal integrity, commitment, and quality of instruction. This school should be the model for all schools in the district, not just the exemplary exception.
my son and a few of his friends went there after leaving a Montessori school. JM seemed to value the ideals my son had after being in Montessori for all his school life. They nurtured that and added on to it. My son was excited about going to school every day! That made all the difference in the world to me as a parent.
Small campus, K-12, brand NEW library, elementary science lab, great teachers!
Everyone is really kind, including teachers and not just students. I have gone to many other schools but this one had been by far the best. They have awesome activities and many field trips. The students are really nice and are wonderful to the new kids.
