ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My child still attends here ONLY because of the friends developed over the years and am very much looking forward to this year being over. After graduation thank goodness we will no longer have to put up with the lies, deception and bullying from administration and mainly Board of Directors. I really hope for the families that will continue on after this year things get better. For any new parents proceed with caution.Try not to be blinded or fooled by all the pretty colors to come. There are plenty of negative reviews on this school for a reason just scroll thru.

The facts: -High Test Scores -High Quality/Caliber Teachers -Fiscally Sound, Well Managed -Very Strong, Solid New Director -Really Happy, Dedicated Parent Group -394 Happy, Focused, Students -Now State-of-the-art Brand New School Facility for 2015 -Current Site has fantastic grounds, plenty of PE and recess playground space, large classrooms, charming outdoor lunch area I truly believe that the few negative comments posted about this school below are in fact representative of a few people who are choosing to use this forum as a way to air their own agenda, which has little or nothing to do with the quality of the education being delivered and the way the school operates. For anyone using this site to seriously evaluate the school, just come and see it in action, see the 99.999% of happy engaged parents onsite volunteering, see for yourself.

i can not believe my daughter came home today talking about she has to use a porter potty for a bathroom. This school is horrible. Why. Really. What is going on. They claim it it wonderful but why does my middle school child have to use such bad bathrooms. The board needs to get it together. I want to believe in this school but when my daughter comes home and says she almost threw up because of the unsanitary conditions it is not good. Im taking her out of this school ASAP!

Well, we're off to a new year at UDA. Let me lay out the facts. The school currently provides a very good educational opportunity in an inviting and accepting community for your children. Actually it is quite exceptional in the latter regard and you would be hard pressed to find a better educational/experiential/social environment for your kids in a school. The new Director is very capable and motivated, both in expertise and attitude, based on my many interactions with her and I expect her to take off and excel from where the last one left off. That may be enough for you. However, you can't ignore the state of the parent community today. There are distinct groups of parents, some critical, some supportive, and many that are just either not interested or motivated to worry about those interactions. Setting aside anyone being right or wrong, it is simply a part of the community at this point that is a reality. Whether it matters to you or not is a matter of your interests. But we shall see how the Board chooses to proceed in creating a place where all parents can feel comfortable and secure contributing.

Home is where the heart is....that's my feeling about UDA. Yes, we recently moved to a less than perfect site and yes, it's not known how long we will realistically stay there. But neither a physical building nor location make a school; it's what is inside that counts. And inside, UDA has fabulous, caring teachers and an enrichment program that can't be found at other public schools. I'll be the first to admit that not everything about UDA is 100% perfect, 100% of the time. But I feel like if we parents can start from a place of appreciation for everything UDA DOES provide our children, we can more effectively promote positive change. UDA is more than a building. It's a community of educators, families and friends.....all who are committed to our children. Moreover, it's a community in which I feel very lucky and grateful to be a part.

UDA is on the move. Yes, changes are taking place! Some include: A temporary location, half days every Wednesday & a permanent new school in East Village (coming Fall 2015--excited!!) I feel that the changes are all intended to benefit and improve our students, teachers and community. I encourage all parents to get onboard, stay informed, volunteer, and be kind to one another. It's what makes our school awesome. My OPINION is that any negative comment regarding UDA may come from a person who does not receive change well. I choose to trust that the educators, staff, board members, etc have our children's best interests in mind. They have not let me down the past 3 years, in the midst of change. It is a part of life and I am using this opportunity to teach my child that. I am thankful to the dedicated and creative teachers who are the heart of UDA as well as understanding parents who stand by our wonderful school community. I am proud to be a UDA parent and thankful every day that my kiddo loves to go to school and gets all the wonderful benefits of being in a smaller charter school.

I am a parent of a student at UDA and was very pleased with the school for the past 4 years but was very disappointed this year with the fact that there was an intent and already a work in progress back in July 2013 to move the school site to a "temporary" location to an area that is not as desirable as the current location. I as many parents would of liked the opportunity if the information was disclosed back in July and not at the end of the school year (July-2014) to either decide to re-enroll or look for another school, at this time any and all enrollments in any charter schools are closed and now we have no other choice but to follow UDA. My only advice to other parents who are thinking of enrolling in this school is to try and get your facts but it is very difficult to get accurate and timely information on major decisions that ultimately affect the education of the children. I will definitely look for a new school for my child as soon as any enrollments become available. I believe that the information was not disclosed early on purposely so UDA would not loose any enrollment and be guaranteed the temporary location by the district just be aware out of a 10 I give it a 2.

I am actually a student at UDA, in middle school. Although I have no idea what really went on last summer, I can honestly say I am proud to be a member of this society. The changes that have been made were for the best and am very excited about the model of the new school. When I went to a public school my grades actually dropped and from being a perfect A student. I would get 60%s on my tests, and was not learning as much as I was in the years before at UDA. On my return, I brought up my grades and am actually learning things not only due to the fact that we have wonderful and understanding science and math teachers, but also now, that there are stable and excellent history and english teachers. Thank you UDA for making my day full of projects and fun learning experiences, I will always be proud to attend this school now and the further year I have left.

My kid and I love UDA! It is a great school with fantastic teachers and wonderful staff. The school offers art, performing art, science, physical education..... I only wish they could offer music class and a foreign language besides Spanish. I am extremely lucky to have found my kid a wonderful school!

This school is truly awesome. Not so small that it's under funded, yet not so big that a child gets lost. I am a single full time working father with a little girl. I need to depend and trust that my Childs school is academically and personally looking out for my girl. UDA gives me that and then some. The performing arts are absolutely awesome and the teaching style very unique and modern. I can't say enough to praise this school only that UDA is preparing my girl for thr modern world!

Academically this school seems great. We're new this year but the kids seem to be happy and thriving. I wanted a small school and a strong sense of community like our previous school. It is a small school but unless you're "in" the community you're definitely an outsider and made to feel incredibly unwelcome. The teachers and staff are wonderful and have been great and incredibly approachable. The parents on the other hand are not friendly or approachable at all. Forget welcoming small talk, they don't even smile at new parents. My husband and I have both tried making friends and had no luck at all. It's too bad too because we have a lot to offer and are more than willing to help both in volunteering and financially but after this first six months we certainly won't be volunteering or donating. At least the kids are happy.

18 reasons to choose UDA 1. Good teachers 2. Sound curriculum 3. Relatively high test scores 4. Small classroom size 5. Small school (2 classrooms for every grade) 6. It is a K through 8 school, which means one drop-off and one pick-up if you have more than one kid 7. Lots of opportunities to volunteer 8. Lots of cool field trips with parent chaperones and parent drivers (more opportunities to volunteer) 9. Centrally located 10. Very diverse student body (economic, racial, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and political diversity). The school has multiracial families, LGBT families, military families, and families with adopted children. Parents come from all walks of life: lawyers, nurses, plumbers, artists, university professors, social workers, teachers, bartenders, students, etc. 11. Cool uniforms 12. Usually only one half-day a month (usually the last Friday of each month) 13. The schedule is 8 am to 3 pm for K-3rd, and 8 am to 3:30 pm for grades 4th-8th. If you have younger and older kids, you can pick them all up at 3:30. 14. Decent (but pricey) aftercare program (with discount for lower income families) 15. Decent (but pricey) lunches (no discounts)

As a parent at UDA, I find the 11/13/13 posting dismaying. There is certainly discord at UDA right now regarding recent changes at the school, and everyone is entitled to their opinions. Reasonable people should be able to have a mature debate about their differences of opinion. Accusing parents of making their kids suffer, or suggesting they should leave UDA, is neither helpful or beneficial.

I am very happy with the changes made over the summer. Although I liked the old principal and office staff - they always seemed scattered and unorganized. The office manager was always coming in late and making students who were there for a late slip wait. Another thing that I am very happy about is the new After Care program. The previous staff was a group of young girls that really just gave the kids paper, crayons or a ball. It was glorified baby sitting. The new After Care program has many more planned activities that the kids enjoy. Already with the fall festival this year, I saw a huge difference in organization and energy of parents that were happy to be there and help. I noticed some of the previously very involved parents no longer volunteer and didn't even bring their kids to the fall festival. I find this behavior so immature and the only ones suffering are the kids. They should just leave the school and attend one where they feel comfortable participating - it will benefit both their kids and them. My main concern now is where the school will move to, because currently they do PE 4 times a week at the park. Thank you to the staff for all the hard work so far this year.

To who ever wrote RESIGN NOW in the last post. I heard one of the teachers just quit. Although we are new to this school I find my self always checking this site. I guess I don't know enough of the history behind all this back and forth. I read a bunch of reviews before coming here and they were all great. It sounds like who ever wrote RESIGN NOW is a bit of a bully

Big changes all of which seem to have been the right ones. Dawn, in the front office is amazing, organized, professional. "There is a spot open at UDA, would you like to enroll your child?" a mother heard as she answered the phone. There are many parents who hope there is a spot open for their child because they believe in UDA. They trust that their child will enjoy it here. There are many teachers that hope to join the UDA team as well. I am proud to be a teacher at Urban Discovery Academy! There has been change and the teachers and staff are doing the best we can to stay POSITIVE AND SUPPORT each other, the students, and the parents. We are supported by the board, the new Directors/Principals and the parents. We thank all the wonderful families that have continued to trust the teachers at UDA to teach and care for their children.

Our school had some big changes this past summer, but as a teacher I am excited about moving forward and am encouraged by improvements that will support our project based learning and arts program. Change can certainly be scary, but it is also gives an opportunity to grow. I think as a staff we are more united and more empowered to move forward. We have an incredible, dedicated group of teachers who provide a high quality education. I challenge you to find a more passionate teaching staff. Unlike what other comments here have suggested, the teachers are not being intimidated by anyone. We are happy to be here, we are happy to be a part of UDA and we look forward to educating your child.

This is a quality school of CHOICE. It was not a private school before, lots of misinformation in the recent comments. Unfortunate that a few parents with questionable motives choose to talk about this school this way. Proof is in the pudding. Quality leadership, quality teachers, teachers are HAPPY with changes made, happy, successful students. The few parents who are not happy, are just now discovering that the school is actually not managed or operated by them. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT'S OPERATED, YOU CAN CHOOSE ANOTHER SCHOOL, PLEASE stop bashing the school.

Teachers are being intimidated and parents disrespected by the Board of Trustees. The leadership and motivations of the board have become particularly questionable in recent months. The Board has even recently changed their own bylaws so that instead of coming to an end of their term this year they have voted themselves to indefinite terms. Unfortunately, changing schools this late in the summer is not an easy task, but if you still have an option I would recommend going elsewhere.

Before this school became a charter school, it was a private school that had to close its doors due to "lack of funds," to put it politely. Now it has a charter and is forced to close the pre-school program as well as the before and after care. We have to stay this year, but next year we will go to a more stable school. If you are considering this school, don't.

This is not a community school. The board runs it with no communication. The founding principal was on vacation when they decided to fire her and several support staff with no reason given. They closed the pre school while it had attendees with no warning and left parents having to leave work and scramble. More changes will come and they will not tell you to prepare your child. The lease is up soon on the building and we have no idea if there is a new location. My husband and I are anguished over having to take our children from their friends they have grown up with. Your local public school is a better choice.

I am extremely disappointed with this school. This summer the Principle and Administration were fired and the Preschool was closed. This all happened at incredibly short notice and with no reasonable explanation given to parents. In a school which prided itself on a strong community and parent involvement I feel this went against the entire ethos of the school. We will not be returning.

MY son has been attending Urban Discovery Academy for 4 years, and they have helped him every step of the way. The staff goes above and beyond to help children academically and socially. I am extremely impressed with the conduct of the principal, and her desire to make the school the best it can be FOR THE KIDS. My son had a difficult time attending school at one point, and Urban Discovery Academy worked with me and my son to get him to a point where he now feels EXCITED to attend school. Without the staff at UDA, my son would have had a very difficult time fitting in and feeling accepted. My appreciation for this school is immense. I agree about the lack of organized sports, and I think the school is making strides to include more of them. They also want to introduce the use of iPads instead of having the kids lug books around in their over-sized backpacks. It's a great school. Small classrooms. Comfortable environment. Wonderful staff!

We appreciate this school greatly! As a parent, who carefully analyzed many schools in the district, we were fortunate to have our daughter attend UDA. I confidently write that UDA is extraordinary. The school has a mission to provide a rigorous well-rounded education. In the process, it creates a loving and nurturing environment for our daughter to learn and feel confident to succeed. Over the past few years, UDA has made amazing improvements in their foreign language enrichment programs and after school activities. It has also implemented a healthy home style lunch program, giving families a remarkable option. It is a small community oriented school that provides personalized attention to its students. Our daughter s teachers have been wholehearted devoted to her growth and development, while making learning fun for her. The school s principal is a dynamic and amazing visionary who works closely with the staff and parents to make the school better. She cares deeply about the kids and about their families too. Our daughter loves going to school. This is a tribute to the dedication of the UDA teachers, staff and leadership.

We love this school for many reasons. Academically, we feel it is right on course with each grade level. Each child seems to be addressed with each of their own specific needs and the overall feeling in the classrooms is a sense of community. There is a big anti-bully campaign at the school and is looking at teaching students pro-active tools to prevent bullying. There is so much parent involvement and there are lots of parents that know the children by name. There are formal PE classes, foreign language, and art and this is during a time where other school are cutting back. We are very pleased to be part of the UDA family in middle school!

This school is a wonderful school that has been built from the ground up to give our children a well rounded education. It also strives to create a strong family atmosphere that my 2 children are striving in, both academically and socially. We have been a part of the school from the start and strongly recommend it to anyone that asks. This school is only starting its 4th year of existence and has grown leaps and bounds from its inception. What people need to remember is that it is a charter school, you have other choices! If this is not working for you or your child and you have no suggestions to possibly fix your perceived issues then maybe you should try your local public school. Or maybe pay through the roof for a private school. In other words...no one is forcing you to come to this school! The majority love it and are always working to better this community. Thank you UDA for teaching my children and for making my family part of yours!

This school is mediocre at best. My child has been struggling but no one seems to notice and brush off my concerns. The policies of the school seem to swing somewhat randomly, one year having a good bit of homework, the next none. At least when there was homework, I had a notion of how my child was performing. Without homework I have very little idea how my child is performing and the classroom papers are all returned stamped with something cute at the top in the child's favorite color but are uncorrected! Classroom papers are returned uncorrected. I am at a loss how a child is to know what they have done correctly or incorrectly. Learning, at least in my experience, has as much to do with getting the right answer as understanding why an answer is wrong. I am always told that my child is doing well. Unfortunately testing does not support the teacher's assessment; the STAR testing was barely passable. Most of the teachers are young and inexperienced so I wonder if they have the know-how to identify learning styles, attitudes and weaknesses. This may be a good school for some; many people clearly think the education is excellent. I cannot say I find this to be true.

I am so very thrilled my daughter attends this Urban Discovery School. First off, the leadership from the principal is phenomenal! She has the best interest of the school as her drive and is managing it all so well. The teachers are all super energetic and original. My daughter is getting a balance of art, music, physical education, as well as a great coverage of the core curriculum. A final reason this school provides a complete education is the amount of field trips they provide the students exploring places in San Diego. Thank you to Ms. Moser and the rest of the staff at Urban Discovery!

My children are getting so much more than what they would at a public school. There is PE four times a week. Each academic year the drama teacher, singing teacher and dance teacher (THAT is correct, THREE Performing Arts teachers) put on three performances so each child has the opportunity to act, sing and dance. There is an actual hands-on Visual Arts teacher. You cannot compete with the passion and joy that all these teachers offer. The teachers work together as a unit and really get to know each child. The classroom sizes have been 1/20 for my kids and that has been WONDERFUL. Lastly, my children have enjoyed all the field trips to Balboa Park. It makes all their book studies come to life when they can see, touch and experience their knowledge first hand. This is my second year at UDA and so far - we are REALLY impressed.

A horrible place to send your middle schooler if u want them to continue on to high school. This school caters to those who under achieve. If your child is at all advanced, stay away or they wont be when they leave. The teachers here told my daughter half way through the eigth grade that she should not even be thinking about high school. Really? Disrespectful teachers and a Principal to back them up instead of the students.

Urban Discovery Academy has alot to learn, and growing to do. They are real quick at bringing the moral of their middle school students down by calling them names, from the principal to the instructors, to the lunch monitors (not to mention in front of the other students) threatening them that they are going to call their future high school principals to tell them how horrible they are. They prepare the middle school students for NOTHING! the 6-8 grade classes at many points throughout the year were learning the exact same things! Once the Star testing cam along the students had no idea what they were doing, they are not equipped to challenge the high acheivers of the class. Once the students reaches the highest point of education they leave it at that without any challenges to achieve anything higher. They talk the talk but they DO NOT walk the walk. I was very disappointed at the past 2 years of the middle school.(one year too many) I am pulling my kids out this school and moving on to another school that can offer them a challenge and give them the education that they deserve.

We have been at UDA for 2 years now. Being a military family, its overwhelming task to find a school for your kids. UDA has become family. Not only do our kids get a quality education in reading, math and all subjects, but they model and are taught those valuable traits of respect, compassion and respect. My kids love school so much they are upset when they are ill and must miss school. And being a military family away from our "blood" family, UDA has become our family who have supported through a hard deployment. You dont get that kind of "education" anywhere else.

The school is great for elementary school, but the middle school program need work. My child did not get noticed by the teacher as much as other schools he has been to. I believe the physical education need some work to. They are very strict about there uniform code but they made him run in his slacks and collard shirt. They also did not stretch before running the mile which kid of bothered me. When my son came there a later in the schoolyear as a seventh grader and the teacher didnt even give him any textbooks and didnt teach him how to organize his binder even though he told him he would help him, he was very disapointed and thought his teacher always overlooked him. When we left the school in the middle of the year he gave my son the best grade in every subject even though he wasnt earning those grades. When sudents would turn in homework or finish a test he would keep it and never give it back. I didnt believe my son at first until he told me that he keeps the work. They use very easy websites for learning which my son has already learned in second grade. Please if there is any other middle school than that one then send your child there. He or she would learn more.

The teachers email with any updates, the school plans outings for the kids as well as parents so we all feel connected. My son is learning more than his friends in other schools. Urban Discovery Academy is, by far, one of the best schools I've worked for in San Diego. The staff at UDA are supportive of one another and have the students, parents, and schools best interest in mind. My daughter just started 1st grade at U.D.A, coming from a Montessori Preschool and Kinder program. She has transitioned so smoothly into 'public school'. But believe us, this is no 'ordinary school'! The project-based, small group (cluster) learning is fantastic and engaging. My daughter comes home excited and full of creativity, energized and truly joyful about learning. The school curriculum has P.E. , drama, Spanish, art as all part of the school day!

Urban Discovery Academy is a brand new school - 2 years old - but has the heart of a school with a long rich history. Teachers readily use technology to communicate with parents - email and newsletters almost daily. I know everyday what my child learned that day and ways that I can help support that learning at home. The school is organized and filled with caring parents and staff alike. The curriculum is creative and engaging. Our family feels so fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of The Urban Discovery Academy.

We love the whole child approach to education, and they do a great job there! They don't teaching to the test, they give the children a whole education. They nurture and inspire. Our son comes home everyday with a breath of knowlegde that includes more than English and Math. In 2nd grade, he can at least tell you who the 1st president of the United States was. He has a good sense of geography, music, art and science. He takes physical education daily, and visits museums on a weekly basis. He gets a well rounded, inspiring education!

The teachers and parents are GREAT!!!! Innovative and open teachers - obvious that they love what they do! Ms. Dolores and the Principal are hands on - they know everyone's name and greet them 100% with warm smiles! The school model - learning clusters, is more about empowering students and enabling them to continue from where they are, rather than a cookie cutter structure that leaves many kids on either side disabled.

A small school with a big heart that continually exceeds expectations in raising money, in providing weekly classes in arts, music, dance; in building computer labs, providing spanish, making PE an integral part of the day, and in the unique enrichment programs like fencing or sewing...most of all in hiring stellar teachers. I would not have my child anywhere else.

Our school is so committed to its students and families. Teachers are so hard working and talented. The principal is the heart of the school and its biggest advocate. Learning is valued and broaded to span the urban community that surrounds the school. There is a vibrant, alive feeling within the physical building created by design and the energy contained within its walls. My daughters are eager to go to school each day...that is invaluable!

Our school educates the child as a whole. They have PE, Art, Spanish as a foreign language, and a Family Tree which is a group of children from all the grade levels that gets together once a month. This teaches them to interact, learn, and respect each other.

The educators are dedicated to your child and they are receptive to what you have to say good or bad. The principal is wise beyond her years and her leadership demonstrates that. I feel comfortable entrusting my child to this school and all it has to offer. I look forward to a successful year. My child scored outstanding on the Star Exam and that is not only a reflection of the home but the classroom and the assistance that was provided.

It is rare to find a school that emphasizes the 'whole child' and regards the child as a unique individual rather than a one-size-fits all approach. I love that there is P.E everyday, art, performing arts, a library and a great computer lab. My son LOVES his teachers and his class!

Academically, it has all been said. The school's reputation its and quality of educators speak for themselves. But what I appreciate even more are the details--for example, the principal knows the name of every student and parent, as well as what car they drive. Every child is educated, safe, and genuinely cared for.
