Why are the negative reviews being deleted off this school's review page? My unhappy review is no longer showing. My wife and I are very unhappy with our son's class. He will not be returning. I do not recommend this school. For the past two years his STAR test scores drastically decreased each year. He is a GATE student and was not challenged.
The reason why so many kids like this school is because they are not held to high standards. The lower grades are better because these children were brought in from the onset but the upper grades lack discipline and is a school of last resort for many kids. There are no resources at this school, no technology and they don't even try to get any. The director has never once made eye contact with my child or even attempted to get to know her or our family. That's what good principals do at good schools. It only has smaller class sizes because they constantly move and had lower enrollment. The school is so broke that they have to. It's tempting to enroll your child here because of all the promises they make but trust me, it's a crummy school!
i am a student in innovations academy and i am sooo happy i attend innovations academy insted of a public school that has to many kids in a class room, the teacher not caring if you actually learn or not and they take to many test that makes kids hate school! I know this because i'v been to public schools for 6 years and belive me i hated school but when i had to attend middle school i didnt know whitch one to pick so i decided innovations academy because the teachers care about your learning, your growth, your problems and you! this school may not be perfect, but i would choose innovations academy over public schools anytime! innovations academy makes me want to have school on saturday and sunday because of how awesome this school is and insted of hating school i love school now!
As a member of the staff I could boast about the cool projects: Hovercraft Racing, Rollercoaster Physics, BizTown, Earthquake-Proof buildings, Living Museums; or how students who used to miss multiple days of school/year are now in school daily; or how victims of bullying at other schools now feel safe at IA; or the wonderful enrichment programs like Glee, Cooking, Graphics Design, Hip Hop that we still offer when other schools have had to shut them down. But I might be accused of being biased since I work for the school. So let me offer this testament from a parent's perspective. My children attend/attended this school since it opened 3 years ago. It is a a great place of learning for them. They feel safe, have great relationships with their teachers, have been engaged in terrific projects AND they have the tools they need to succeed in high school. This school has served us well. I invite you to visit our campus to see first hand how the school can work for your children.
As a teacher, reading the reviews about us being unhappy or forced to write glowing reviews has been very upsetting. I can honestly say working as a teacher at Innovations Academy has been the best job I have ever had. Our school is not perfect, but no school is. The important thing is that our students are challenged, engaged, and feel emotionally safe. We are a project based school that values student choice and our small class sizes allow us to truly get to know our students strength and interests, both in and out of the classroom. I realize that some families are hurt by the school moving locations, but the negative reviews are simply not accurate.
Innovations Academy is a great school if you are looking for a school that does project based education, places great importance on the community life of the classroom, does not rely on reward and punishment to keep the school going, and does not rely on homework to teach the children. This is really not what everyone is looking for in a school. I am one of those that values the way they run their school, but many people over their three years of operation have signed up for the school without really realizing why they do things the way they do and what is valuable about it. Every year we have gotten better as a school and this this next year will be the best so far. We will flourish with a real school site and people will really get to start to see how great we can be. Parents and teachers will be even more excited to create because we will know that we can build on it for years. If you want to get a better picture of whether or not Innovations Academy would be right for your family, come to the school and check out our school and our folder of testimonials. Many families are grateful to Innovations Academy for the experience they have had with our school..
As a credentialed teacher with over 20 years of experience in the field of education, I really appreciate Innovations Academy. The director has a wonderful vision for the school where students are respected as individuals. All teachers are trained in positive discipline, non-violent communication and project-based learning over the summer. They are dedicated and work hard to meet the needs of all their students. The moves have definitely been challenging, but the director has fought hard to find us a school that is made for children with our own classrooms, bathrooms, playground, lunch area, etc. We will be able to make this our home next year. Of course, there are always places we can grow and improve, and we are striving to be the best we can be. But, I believe that Innovations is a creative, progressive school with a vision to meet students where they are, work with them on the social skills that are so important in this world, make learning creative and fun and relevant, and join them in exploring the world together.
This is the 4th school I've taught at and, I can honestly say, it is BY FAR the best school I've been at. We have an excellent balance between social emotional learning and academic rigor. The school is not perfect, but the staff collaborates twice a week to improve ourselves as both educators and a school as a whole. Our project based curriculum has made great strides as our students are critically thinking, problem solving, and creating beautiful work. I'm confident that Innovations Academy will continue to grow to be one of the leading schools in California.
My oldest child started at this school two years ago because he needed a smaller school that would allow a more individualized experience for him. At the beginning of this year, I moved my other son to Innovations as well because the neighborhood school was too large and impersonal and he was getting lost there. I wish I had moved him sooner. Both of my children love going to school and absolutely adore their teachers. Both of my children are very intelligent and there has been no problem challenging them here. In fact, I am constantly impressed by the things they are learning and by the excitement that they show. As a newer charter, there are some bumps in the road but it is exciting and fulfilling to be in on the ground level and to feel that you can help shape the direction of the school. I am grateful to have such a wonderful community to send my children off to each morning. Innovations is not for everyone but if you are looking for a nurturing environment where kids will be inspired to learn, will develop a love of learning, and will acquire lifelong social skills, our school is the place to be.
My kids love being part of the IA community and I love this school! IA is a hybrid school program offering 5 day, 3 day and 2 day a week options. My kids attend the 2 day classes and love the opportunities IA gives them to be part of a larger cooperative learning community while we also learn at home. The school's director strives to create a school community based on respect and excellence. I love how teachers and students are taught principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and decisions are made by consensus, rather than the authoritative models in most schools. Teachers, staff and students work together to create, inspire and learn. I love the project based approach to learning as well! There is so much more authentic learning going on here - the kids are learning the skills of HOW to learn as well as keeping the joy of learning alive. I applaud this "innovative" school for choosing learning methods that embrace creativity and divergent thinking!
Innovations Academy is a really special school. What drew me to this school was the director's vision. What keeps me at IA is my absolute belief that her vision is worth pursuing! Teachers are encouraged to explore their creativity in the classroom and think "outside the box". We are a diverse group of teachers whose dedication to keeping the joy of learning alive for students is paramount. As a staff member, I feel valued. My voice is heard and I can be an agent of change. This is so very different than other public schools that I have worked at where test scores were the bottom line and the principal never got to know me. Come visit us at IA and you will see kids engaged in directing their learning in ways that are meaningful to them while acquiring the skills they need to achieve all of their goals!
I am a teacher at Innovations. I give 4 stars because know our school has room to grow, but the key elements are here and we are passionate about making our school an example for what education should be. I enjoy working with such involved and passionate families. They truly care about their children, are so helpful and involved in the school and support each other. The students are excited to learn and amaze me each day with their ideas and problem solving abilities. They persevere and keep a high level of expectation for each other. I feel honored to be a part of their learning. I also appreciate the collegiality on campus. My colleagues often share new learning websites, books and articles. Our director is supportive and flexible. This month we are reading The Ethic of Excellence, as a staff. Each week, we reflect on the chapter, discuss and plan new ways to implement powerful teaching. I invite you to our director s coffee connection or to a parent tour. My classroom is open to parents who are looking for the right school for their child. After all, this is the most important decision, one that each family needs to make for themselves. Good luck in your quest!
I do not recommend this school. My child attended for 2 years. Dispite the fact that she attended a a great school this year, she may be repeating this grade again next year. She was above grade level prior to her experience with this school. She is now stuggling to keep up. They have some good ideas, but they lack structure, follow through, and know-how. There are just some areas that are really lacking at this school. There are GREAT Charter schools but this is not one of them!
I cannot understand the positive reviews for this school! Isn't the primary purpose of a school to EDUCATE it's students? The BIG picture is told in the terrible STAR test results. Check them out. My child attended IA and it didn't take long to see that the class was all playtime and no learning. I didn't have a problem with anyone at IA, in fact they all seem very nice. But failing to educate my child is unacceptable, no matter what else this school may have to offer! I value education and encourage everyone to think twice before considering IA.
I think Innovations Academy is a wonderful school, but it is not for everyone, for instance, kids who cant handle the freedom we are given or kids that like learning from textbooks. I myself love IA and have progressed in my school work. Instead of getting Ds I am getting As in most of my classes and i feel like i am learning. it is the 3rd school i have been to and the ONLY school that has actually worked with me. I finally found a place that helps me get the work that's being done in class and doesn't pile on homework every night. Now I can have time to do sports and other activities. For the parents that said the teachers were not good, I absolutely disagree. I know all the teachers at IA and all of them are nice and help the kids get what they are learning and let them have a little fun at the same time.
I think it's a really fantastic school. There are a lot of people that have gone there and decreased in grade level. I think that is because it is a more "free" school. Meaning, you aren't sitting in a class of strict teachers being told what to do every second. Kids something take advantage of this freedom and forget that they are even in school, in a way. I am a student at Innovations Academy and I actually enjoy it a lot. The teachers teach things in a certain way that no other school has done, in my opinion. I understand everything we learn because of the extent that it is explained. The teachers are very friendly and I love out "CAMPS" and "Explorations." I used to be pretty bad at Math and Science and I now am in Algebra and I enjoy both Science and Math. My Humanities teacher also encouraged me to go to College and now I have a bigger plan for myself in the future.
We are new to the school. We chose it specifically because of the overall philosophy. Our child has specific issues that NO SCHOOL so far was able to tackle. Moreover, NO SCHOOL so far took into account her differences and tried to work WITH her instead of AGAINST her. If you are a traditional parent and/or with a traditional child, IA is definitely NOT for you. You will hate the seemingly big, happy type of what appears to be disorganized sometimes and will be trumped by what you see. BUT, If you seek a system that actually sees your kids as real persons and not test-machines, then IA is the right choice and the right place. It is a place of discovery and learning in a smart way, with a marked stress on critical thinking and lots of real citizen-like type social interaction.
The last two reviews look like they were written by someone who works at the school. The idea of the school is great and some teachers are very nice, but the leadership is lacking and the principal's approach to education is wrong. If they loath the state testing so much and think it is sub-standard, then why is it they do so poorly? In order for one to boast that they are better than the norm, they need to be able to perform better than the norm. Yes, there is improvement in the score, but it is still the lowest rated school in the area. Also, there are a lot parents who are happy about the fact that their kids love going there. There is a big difference between being happy and being productive. I'd be happy to come to work every day too if all I had to do was play!
where should i begin? the teachers are inexperienced, there is a lot of playing going on in the classroom. what happened to structure? the new site is in a horrible location...they failed to tell u that its next to harmony rehab facitlity (google it) for substance abuse and alcoholism! theres a ministry office and a construction company there aswell...our children are sharing the same restrooms with these strangers. u should look at this school from google maps and see it surroundings. they are extremely money hungry!! the cost for care is so high...for the kids to be in a shed? no they dont have any playgrounds, grass or a yard. our kids are being put in a shed for 2 to 3 hours with a few toys and computers and the are charging us $300 a month! you'll notice at every meeting all they discuss is how to make more money!! i cant wait to get my child out of here....i hear SDCCS is better
The STAR test scores are still ABYSMAL, even though most grades except for 3rd, and 6th & 7th in math, showed improvement. The scores are below the state average by 36 percent OR MORE in math across all grades except 2nd and 4th. But what do you expect from a principal who brags we don't teach to the test ? That's obvious, but is there actual instruction taking place, or is school just playtime for the students? Where is the proven curriculum for each classroom or are they just letting teachers make it up as they go? It seems this experiment in new age teaching isn't working. IF you keep your children at the school, consider moving to the homeschooling program so that you can make sure they learn from proven curriculum.
