CDM is wonderful. My 2 kids and us like the chool very much. Teachers are well educated in CDM. Specially their Music and Math program is excellent.
CDM is just mediocre, the teaching uninspired. There are real problems with bullying and the curriculum is almost remedial. If your child has an IQ above 120, go elsewhere!
This is our third year at this school, we have always had excellent teachers. My child is extremely happy at Carmel Del Mar. The office staff is less than welcoming. Parent involvement is lacking. I feel that this is due to the fact that the same people year after year run the PTA, new people and ideas are not really welcome. They have a 'we have always done it this way, why change attitude' I only volunteer when it directly affects my child. Carmel Del Mar is a solid school. However, there is room for improvement.
Lack of adult supervision on the school grounds. The principal is closing his eyes to all of this. I am there only because I have to be.
Overall, we have been pleased with the school. THis is our first year (3rd grade), and I do think one failing of the school (and others I suspect) is not to challenge the brighter kids. THere is a great emphasis on drills and test scores. My daughter has been complaining of boredom, but this sadly seems to be a feature of many of our public schools secondary to the no-child-left-behind nonsense. In short, I think the majority of kids will do well in this school, but do not be fooled by CA-state wide standards that have been dumbed-down.
Quality of academic programs: High Availability of extracurricular activities: Excellent Level of parent involvement: the best -- coordinator for parent volunteers and the PTA help parents get acquainted with things we can do to help the school. Also lots of opportunities to help in class, even with not-at-home career. Other: Teachers are very well qualified.
