We started our 1st grade daughter at Barnard b/c of the new Chinese magnet program in Sep '08. We couldn't be happier with our decision! Even though we commute 30 minutes each way to get her there, it is well worth it. I do not have any experience with this school in the past, but this year Barnard has a new principal who is very passionate & energetic about the school. I see him involved with the children & parents on a daily basis. Class sizes in the lower grades have a cap at 15 students per teacher - excellent ratio! We are very happy with our daughter's teacher. She saw that my daughter was reading above grade level & made arrangements for her to have reading time w/a 2nd grade class every day. Chinese teachers are so good and teach language in a fun, engaging way.
I have 3 children ages 9-17 all of whom have attended Barnard. When my eldest was about to start kindergarten many friends and neighbors told me terrible things about Barnard and encouraged me to enroll my daughter elsewhere. Luckily I did not listen to them. I have seen many changes at this school over the last 10 years or so, in the beginning I had many doubts and reservations. I'm happy to say that there are fantastic caring teachers there. The school is very small and everyone knows everyone else. Parent involvement is lacking and I did not have a problem with the principle(who has retired) but others did. The principle was from a different era (1950-1960s) and was very strict in many ways but genuinely cared about her students. Office staff can be a bit curt (but not as bad as Dana Middle school). All in all a good school.
The administration at this school is terrible! Thank goodness the teachers are as good as they are, because without them those poor children would be miserable. Definitely the worst principal I've seen in my time!
Barnard is a great school. The teachers and the office staff are friendly and helpful. It's a small school, and the kids all know each other. This year, Barnard has become a Mandarin Chinese Magnet School, and all the kids are so excited to learn about Chinese language and culture.
Barnard is a nice little school with a lot of potential and so many enthusiasic teachers who want to do great things for their kids but are prohibited because the admin. is in the dark ages. There needs to be more parent involvement with a stronger voice and more on-site participitation! The office staff makes parents feel like they or their kids are always 'in trouble', therefore there is a bit of negativity on campus. Even if many of the families are not affluent, people still want to support their children's school in any way they can--it seems as though the encouragement is not there.
Barnard is a small school with a lot of good teachers. The parents need to be more involved with school activities, and the PTO needs to be reestablished. The children are great and the staff is wonderful! This school needs to have more extracurricular activities/after school events, such as fairs, boy/girl scouts, maybe even mentoring programs. This will happen if the parents become more active. This past year the same group of 4-5 parents seemed to be the only volunteers. Remember children with parents involved with their school tend to perform better.
Barnard is a great school if you want your child to know the names of everyone. It's small and quaint. The staff work together very closely. Banard is a bad school if you want good leadership.
This school is great and I highly recommend it to everyone. The teachers are dedicated. Every child gets a very great education and loves being at Barnard.
My son's father transferred him to this school w/out my knowledge. I am curious to know how other parents whose child/children feel about this school?
This is a school supported by its wonderful teachers - However, do not count on the administration or the parents for involvement.
