Teacher effectiveness: Very effective
July 13, 2015
Given the lack of support the teachers are doing a phenomenal job within the restrictions they must work under. It is a tribute to them that they can do what they can with the lack of discipline by administration and the whining and complaints of some parents. Too bad so many have chosen to leave this school to teach at other schools where the students are more respectful and the administration is more supportive and effective.

Develops grit: Disagree

Students are coddled so that whining gets them out of work or consequences of negative behavior. In this way they do not learn about positive determination or grit. They do learn that if they persist in complaining they'll eventually get their way. As they pass through the grades this eventually results in students that feel entitled and spoiled, especially if they don't get their own way. This is evident in the middle and high schools that eventually get these students.

Develops respect: Disagree

While most students are respectful this is a result of good parenting. Those lacking support at home continue their disrespectful behavior at school with very little consequences. Since there is little support for staff if students choose to be defiant to teachers and parents complain about any discipline attempts, the teachers are left high and dry and the students learn they can get away with whatever they want as long as they have parents that will back them up.

Develops empathy: Disagree

The younger students are caring and compassionate but they soon learn they can get away with teasing and even bulling by the time they reach the 5th grade with very little consequence. Teachers are not supported by administration if a parent disagrees so students soon learn exactly how far they can go and what they can get away with. For this reason there is a higher than average turnover rate of teachers transferring out of this school.

Develops honesty: Disagree

The teachers are burdened with all discipline so if a problem goes beyond the classroom, there is little support from the administration. Children can lie with very little consequences. When discipline gets to the administration level there is very little accountability or follow through.

Carson is a great school for your child's self esteem. They can look forward to getting a reward just for showing up if it's their turn. Nothing like scoring points for smiling, attendance or helping tie a shoe. You can look forward to having your every whim met. If you don't like something, just complain to the principal and whoever is responsible will be reprimanded immediately without question. It's a whiner's paradise. If you have any questions, ask the administrative assistant (principal's secretary) as she is really in charge. If you can find her and she's not on a personal call. Test scores are everything so be confident instruction is focused on the all important common core tests to raise the school's ranking. Your child may even get to use computers to practice some drill and kill for a temporary boost. All of the teachers (that are left) are focused on making sure your child gets those test scores up. Don't fret about that 30% turnover rate. Those teachers needed to go anyway.

We just moved from a school that was unwelcoming so Carson is a breath of fresh air. Even though we had only completed 2 weeks it has been wonderful. Principal and teacher were very welcoming.

Carson is a beautiful school. The staff work together to ensure student success. The principal is an accessible caring person who truly works to make the school a safe and academically rigorous environment. My daughter loves to come to school each day. I love that she is getting an ethnically diverse experience!

The level of service the administration staff offers is excellent. They make you feel like your child is the most important person. They really do care.

Carson Elementary has a great ethnic mix, absolutely dedicated teachers and staff, and a very responsive principal with an open door policy. She genuinely cares about the students, as well as staff and parents' concerns. If Carson has a weak point, it is that it could use a lot more parent volunteers to assist in classrooms with some one-on-one or small group coaching so all students have every opportunity to grow and learn.
