An outstanding school, with an emphasis on academics. Teachers at most grade levels work together so curriculum is similar in all classrooms. Parent involvement is high and it is easy to volunteer for various activities, PTA positions & Foundation board.

This school is over rated. The parents are over involved to the point that their child can do no wrong. The parents buy the teachers and principals support (for their bully children) at the auctions and fundraisers. The bullying has gone on for decades. Parents whose children are bullied move out of the area and you never hear from them. The resource teacher is a gossip, so be careful if you need any kind of learning assistance...everyone in the school will find out about it.

This school did not even bother telling us that our grandson was reading below grade level. What kind of communication is this? We did not find out until the next year. We could have placed him in a summer reading class. This is not what we expected when we sacrificed to get him into this school. It is also something that should have been covered in parent teacher meetings, as well as in daily communications.

Our child has now promoted from Hearst. Looking back, our experiences were very positive. The quality, overall, of the teachers was excellent. Their commitment to the students success was obvious. Since a change in principal leadership a few years ago, the morale of the teachers and parent volunteers grew dramatically. The new principal, Jamie Jorgensen, leads with enthusiasm, joy, and inclusiveness.

This is our first year at Hearst, and we have been very impressed with the kindergarten team. The K-teachers work as a true kindergarten teaching team. The teachers are experienced and still very engaged in their professional development. With a grant, Mrs. Baker, along with parents, began a Hearst garden club. My daughter has fed worms, planted seeds and watched them grow, and then harvested the produce, enjoying salad with her fellow gardeners! Every week, kindergartners have a computer lab, library lab, music lesson, and P.E. session. The kids also have art lessons taught by parents. There is strong parent support and involvement at Hearst and a community spirit. The school acknowledges and rewards the kids success, and Principal Jorgenson s weekly message, Make it a great week or not, the choice is yours, builds a sense of responsibility and pride in the kids.

This is our first year at Hearst and we are having a wonderful, 'healthy' experience so far. We have had many undesirable experiences at other schools and this year my son finally said....'I want to stay at this school!'. Principal Jorgensen is really making a great effort to improve an already magnificent school and the parents come together as a close community and really support each other....We all appear to have the same goal which is to offer our children a wonderful school experience. With art corp and band program, my son is having a blast! Kudos to Hearst....they have the right idea of what a school should be...FUN!

This is a great school. My kids love this school and talk about school all the time. We have been to private schools and Hearst has higher expectations of learning and want the kids to excel. It's a great location and all the parents are involved. Principal Stern is finally gone and there is a new principal! There is a just great buzz of energy from the parents, teachers and kids and joy for the future of the kids education and what the school can offer.

I'm pleased with my K student's teacher. She is good at her job. Principal Stern does her job, though the office is a bit disorganized. That's improving. We can thank our local business community for their support/involvement AND those parent who are generous volunteers.

The principal greatly inhibits the success of this school. There has been significant staff turnover. Parents are very involved.

I have only had my child in Hearst for 1 year yet both her and I are both excited for the next year to start. The lock up policy helps me feel just a bit safer when I drop off my child. Parents and Staff are involved and always keeping a happy fun environment for the kids to learn.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with the principal, she has even gone out of her way to help my family and I in the past. I think what's important about this school is that it has an incredible community of dedicated, creative and active teachers, parents and children. A community that is too exuberant and independent to be stifled by the actions or pressures of the principal. I think her intentions are earnest in wanting to ensure that the school remains competitive and demonstrates marked improvement. Principals come and go and she's definitely not the worst of them all. My child loves her classroom storytelling visit and if she's got my child's approval then that's as good as having mine. Despite all of this, which the children seem to be unaware of anyway, this school offers an ideal learning environment. I am very satisfied.

The parent involvement at Hearst is dynamite! They have a PTA and a foundation that are extremely active in supporting the teachers and the work that is done at school. There are a lot of extracurricular activities that you may choose from, all held after school. Most of the teachers are devoted to their students and the school, and do a fantastic job. There is a new garden area that has made the school look much better. My children love to stop by and check for hummingbirds after school every day. The principal is the only big problem at Hearst.

I am still happy with the education of my children, I would just prefer that the principal would let the teachers teach!

Extra curricular activities are great, and there is a lot of financial support from the Foundation and PTA. The school library is open only limited hours and they do not have a nurse at all (a health aid is there for a couple hours). I don't trust the principal at Hearst. She will say one thing to your face and then go behind your back when your conference is finished and say the complete opposite. There are some great teachers who go all out, particularly at the lower grades and in 4th grade.

Yes they do offer music, art, etc but the lock down is just crazy. I have not had any problems with the teachers- I can tell you parent participation is great! Pick up is a pain also.

We love this school! All of the staff is very welcoming. The teachers are wonderful! Everyone is more than willing to meet to discuss any questions or concerns that may come up. People speak badly about the principal, but I have not had any misfortune with her. She does what needs to be done to keep her school on track, safe, and fair for all of the students. The parent participation is amazing! It's really like being at a private school. The music, excercise, and art programs are outstanding!

The Principal at Hearst is extremely controlling and has her own agenda. She does not listen to the parents or the staff. I rated safety and discipline the highest, meaning that it's over the top. The principal disciplines everyone including the parents. The school is so 'locked down' that after the bell rings in the morning, immediately the gates are locked. The morale is very low as a result of the principal. Parents are greatly involved but many are very unhappy with the principal and the district. The teachers are wonderful and would do better if they were actually allowed to do their job without such strict, outside requirements. The scores at Hearst are high, but don't let that fool you. Art, music and science are such a low priority to that of math, reading and writing. Recess time for kindergartners was cut, all for 'instrcutional minutes.'

This school is staffed with dedicated, talented teachers and attended by involved and caring parents. However, in my opinion, they are hamstrung in their efforts by the principal. Ignore the test scores, because as long as this principal remains the atmosphere is poisioned.

Terrific parent involvement makes this seem like a private school. Most teachers are excellent, with an exception in a couple of grades (one of the third grade teachers is not nearly as good as the others). However, the principal seems very rules-bound and inflexible -- and somewhat out of the touch with the teachers who have been around for a while.

Visited K1-K3 classes on 5/5/05. All three teachers were very welcoming and spoke generously about a variety of features of their classes. Children appeared to be very engaged in their assignments, eager to share their self created booklets and stories with me. In one class, there was an additional helper, may have been a parent. Teachers seemed very much in control of the classes. Children were focused and happy. The rooms were filled from ceiling to floor with learning materials and finished projects. All teachers were responsive to the children who solicited help. Entry and exit in to the Kindergarten areas seemed very controlled. The classes, special Kindergarten play area (with jungle gym, black top & picnic table), and library were all fenced in to one area. I believe 2 of the classes have their own bathrooms. Overall impression was a very positive one.

My daughter has been attending since first grade; she graduated 06/04. During that time all of the teachers I had direct contact with were very willing to meet with me and discuss any issue. The school does offer a music program, which we took advantage of. I was overall very happy, and my daughter as well, with our experiences.
