Our school is a terrific school to work and learn at. There is a lot of collaboration between staff and students to ensure learning is a priority. Our students take on responsibility with a sense of pride and ownership. Our military families are welcomed into our Kumeyaay family knowing they have a lot of support and are never alone. Our staff is caring and we work as a team. Even though our budget is pretty much next to none, and our resources are slim, we still make it work in each of our classrooms.

AMAZING! The teachers are caring and are great at communicating with parents. Mrs. Quintana is an amazing teacher! The parents are highly encouraged to be involved and there are tons of volunteer opportunities. Art and music are awesome and they encourage the children to be active. I cannot sing the praises of this school! Now I do have one complaint. Mrs. Young the science teacher. She does not tailer her classes for the different age groups. Kindergarteners don't get 5th grade lessons...

Kumeyaay is an excellent school ! It has a high API and is still getting higher. The teachers are great. The staff are knowledgeable and supportive. The principal cares a lot for the school, very active, so hands on with her job, and I saw areas that improved in the school when she took over. The parents' involvement is awesome. My kids learned a lot not only from the regular curriculum but also from other programs that were somehow funded by the PTA contributions and the proceeds from FUNDRAISING projects that parents continue to support because, ultimately, these are for the benefits of the children. There are so many students in Kumeyaay who excel. And I don't think the child will fail in getting the best elementary education if he/she is enrolled in Kumeyaay. But still, it is a joint effort / support from the school and the parents. The parents cannot leave everything with the school, we, as parents must do our part for our children's success. Are those who give negative reviews discuss their sentiments with the the principal first for improvement before sending out a bad review? Have we done our part / role for our kid's school?

If you want to be assualted by fund raising for less than stellar programs , while science is excellent and music ok, art is awful and the technology ( Lego) is by grant and minimal. And if you have a child who needs education to be average. And if you pefer a principal who is after her career first..... this is the place for you.

Kumeyaay is a school parents can be proud of! Once again, my child was taught by one of SDUSD's finest teachers, a former Teacher of the Year, and challenged throughout her 4th grade year. This year my daughter made amazing progress and has found a love of school she had never exhibited before. The PTA and Foundation, along with parent support, supplement an overall excellence in education.

Our daughter attended K-2 at Kumeyaay. In our first year, it was a very tough first couple of weeks due to our class not having a kindergarten teacher from the beginning of school. It was no fault of the school, but of the district. The principal did everything in his power to make it work out well, and it eventually did. Our second year had a bit of a rough go having no one at the helm as our principal became sick and wasn't around, though we had good fill-in principals. Our third year introduced a wonderful new principal who clearly loves Kumeyaay and is working tirelessly to ensure Kumeyaay remains a top quality school. Parent involvement is super (at least those that do participate) and the teachers are truly unparalleled. The Foundation, PTA and volunteers work tirelessly to provide basic programs such as art, music and science in the school that the district no longer provides. The teachers are some of the best around. The parents/students should feel very blessed to have these amazing teachers. The nurse and the office staff round off an excellent team! I am sad that we had to move, but Kumeyaay will always be a special place to me and my family.

This school has been a big disappointment. Lack of staff, cut backs, fill-in principals through out the year and poor student support for extra needs.

This school is the best from top to bottom. From the amazing office staff, teachers, and administration this school is dedicated to helping each child be the best they can be. One of the most important factors in making this school top notch is the families and community that support this school. The parents work very hard to ensure that whatever needs to be done to support the best possible education for their children is done. Kumeyaay has first class art, science, computer and music programs rivaling that of private schools without the cost or commute. We are so grateful that during these difficult economic times for the district that our children are in the Kumeyaay/DePortola school boundaries where we know they will continue to get an outstanding education.

Kumeyaay Elementary has been nothing short of a blessing for our two kids. Starting with our principal, Mr. Mosher, our amazing group of teachers, support staff, grounds crew, we have nothing but positives to share with those considering to enroll their student at Kumeyaay. Also noteworthy is the tremendous amount of parental support on campus, the extensive PTA & Foundation rosters...it's truly amazing to see all the names of volunteers to offer support to our school. Way to go Coyotes!!

Kumeyaay is a great elementary school. You will feel and see the involvement and concern of parents which positively affect not only their own kids but the school itself and other students. You will see that your donations go to meaningful results. It is like a private school and it is one of the major reasons why we truly wanted to stay in our community not to mention the fact that it has high API.

I'm very impressed with my child's 4th grade teacher (room 17). She knows the standards well, and treats each child with respect. Children in this room are challenged individually based on their needs. My daughter now has an amazing science and math vocabulary, and a love for both of these areas because of this teacher. Books read aloud to the class are high quality, and they make the children think while learning to love literature. This is an excellent school!

I've been impressed with the high-quality, solid teachers my child has had at Kumeyaay, and the science and music programs. The one criticism I have is that parents (usually mothers) are allowed to spend time volunteering inside the classroom while class is in session. Some of these parents end up acting as lobbyists for their own children with the aim of gaining special treatment, rather than out of altruism. Fortunately, my child's teacher doesn't permit parents to influence how she runs the class or gain favor, and I respect her tremedously for that. Teachers, not parents, should control the classrooms.

Very happy with just about all teachers and with the new principal. He seems to know every single kid by name. Third class teacher my son has this year (2007) in Room 19 is simply outstanding. Extracurricular activities are wonderful with wise fundrasing from parents, and the SAY program (afterschool) also verey very good. My second son will be attending next year, no doubt.

I am the father of two well adjusted, GATE qualified boys. My First son had an excellent experience at Kumeyaay (promotion 2004), exiting with high marks and an enjoyment in all subject matters. He loved his teachers through the entire K - 5 experience. However, my second son (promotion 2007) has had difference experience. The past three years have brought two principles, and some crucial teacher turnover. The energy of the school has become negative and disappointing. While some teachers remain positive, many of the higher-level teachers have become rigid and cynical. They use negative tactics in discipline and classroom control, looking for subdued students rather than active questioning minds. In the three years between my sons I have seen an excitement for school turn to tears, fear, and a resentment of the institution of learning.

All of the teachers my daughter has had at Kumeyaay have been excellent. There is a lot of parent involvement and all the teachers make you feel welcome while you are there. They have a scince lab and music and art classes weekly along with a state of the art computer center. The library is also top notch.

Super parent involvement and a strong foundation give the financial support and direction required for superior acedemic performance. The close knit community of Tierrasanta also supports the unity of this schoool.

Your first impressions of this school are of orderliness, friendliness and caring. My grandson's classroom exemplified all these characteristics and more. As a special needs student, he thrived in his pre-K class. His teacher and the aides were super communicators and supporters. Your child will be happy here.

This school is insane. The parents create an atmosphere of social and financial pressure on their children at a young age. The parents are actually over involved. The kids are concerned about their name brand jeans and what your daddy does for a living in the second grade. My daughter went here for one year. She was miserable, so we switched her to Vista Grande. It was the best move we could have made. She is much more comfortable here. The other reviews say that Kumeyaay is like a private school. That is true - with all the social pressure that comes with it.

I have a total of three school years (spread over two children) with this school. Overall, it has been very positive. I've had two excellent teachers, one poor one. The poor teacher did a good job academically but she didn't seem to like any of the children or parents. There is a very high level of parent involvement at this school which is excellent. I haven't had a lot of opportunity to evaluate extracurricular activities but there regular programs for art, libraries, science, etc. are very strong. My only complaint is that both the principal and teachers are very casually dressed (micro-mini skirts, flip flops, short shorts, etc.). I don't think it sends a good message to either the students or parents regarding how seriously they (the staff/administration) take their work.

My daughter transfered to this school from LMSVSD and I found it to be very delightful. The teachers are very interested in the overall academic progress of each student and rather than putting a check mark in a box, I am provide a grade allowing me the opportunity to truly evaluate and analyze my daughters progress. I am very satisfied with the school.

Kumeyaay is a terrific school. The parental involvement is unbelievable, and the efforts of the PTA and Kumeyaay Foundation have provided the children at this school with a science club, music program, and more.

I love Kumeyaay. Kumeyaay is just like a private school without paying private school money. To me Kumeyaay is the very best school that San Diego has to offer.
