This school is fantastic! The teachers are wonderful. The programs are enriching. My son is thriving. The best part of the school for our family, however, is the parent involvement. As a former teacher, I recognize that the importance of parent participation in the school community is invaluable. These parents go above and beyond to ensure that this school has everything it needs to help our children succeed in every facet possible. We all contribute our time and efforts when and where we can and our children benefit beyond belief. It is an amazing learning environment and any family would be happy to be a part of it.

I'm so thankful that my son is able to go to this WONDERFUL school! The Vapa program is amazing! I can't imagine a private school being any better. The running club before school is a fantastic program. Everyday my son wants to go to school. Teachers, Parents, Principal, Staff as well as students are involved in making this school a 10!

Sunset View is a wonderful school in all measures. Every day when I ask my children how their school day was, they reply "wonderful". The new principal, teachers, staff, parents and students create a great learning environment. The Kids First Foundation fundraising and extra programs allowed the school to reduce class size in fourth grade and fund important programs that would otherwise not be available through the budget. This is a first-class public school with an amazing ocean view.

Despite the huge budget crisis, SV continues to test high and succeed. At first I was worried about larger class sizes, but my child is thriving and loves the environment. There are always new friends to play with, new situations to digest - real life training vs. sheltered Private School Bubble Children. From what I have observed, the teachers know how to manage their classes effectively. The entire staff is great, warm & caring and the parents are generous with their time and involvement. Where budget shortfalls exist, the PTA and Foundation have (thankfully) saved the day. Just remember, there is no such thing as Free Public School. If you attend SV, plan on investing in your child's future (volunteer time, money, etc.) It's worthwhile, and you will see direct results from your involvement.

This is a well run public elementary school, and the new principal, Linda Parker, has the energy and enthusiasm to address and tackle the challenges. As with any school, the quality of the teacher(s) has the most direct impact on each student's learning. The location is beautiful, the student body is very positive + overall well behaved. Lots of the extra programs + activities to enhance students' experience. Very solid PTA and SSV Foundation that fund and staff extra and needed programs to enhance the educational experience. A plus in art, PE and basics= math and language arts. Awesome garden at the school, but overall the science curriculum is lacking. The 'Everyone a Reader' program is helping low performing students. Unfortunately SSV is a very good public school that has yet to address the unmet needs of each individual student--teaching 'at the grade level' in many cases is still 'old school'

This is the public school solution for those who can not afford or do not want to incur the cost of a private education. A great location..... Understandably, there are parents who are involved and those who are not; The results are most noticable in the behavior of the children, level of respect for themselves, others and somewhat lagging social skills of the students being 'raised' by the public education system. The limitations of the state funded school system preclude ( or excuse ) teacher involvement in anything other than approved lesson plans for the day. Disruptive students seem to, ' have a right' to express themselves with little or no regard for the others they affect in the classroom. Private education is recommended unless you like the view. You'll get little else.

All three of my children have or are attending Sunset View. It is a wonderful school. Every teacher we have had, has made a life impact on my children. The parent involvement and support enables the school to provide 30 minutes of Spanish a day for every child (with full-time spanish faculty), monthly Art curriculum, an up to date computer lab, music, wonderful activities, environment and community. It has been the place where memories are made for each of my children. Because of the school's location on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, and the excellent academic environment, the school attracts some of the best teachers and administration in the district. It truly has been a privilege for my children to attend this school.

I have two children. One is going there and one went through 2-4 grade. The teachers we have had have been wonderful. They are very much into parent participation, which is great, unless you are a single parent and trying to make a living. I felt stressed out with tons of requests to volunteer. I did what I could. Also, 6-6 program caters to the wealthy Point Loma residents. Last yr they changed it into a licensed childcare. The disadvantaged parents who really need type of care simply can not afford it. On the brighter side, many opportunities for your child to be enriched with Art Corp, science, field trips, PE, etc. The campus view is stunning. Overall, this place can not be beat.

A mediocre at best school. This is why: Administration/Staff does not do a good job with addressing the problem of rowdy / obnoxious / disruptive students in the classroom and on the campus. The 'problem behavior' kids are not dealt with effectively. Their rowdy / obnoxious / disruptive behavior continues. The teachers are competent are caring, but how effective can an instructor be when s/he is constantly interrupting their lesson plan to address misbehaving students? Fortunately, this school ends at 4th grade.

Sunset View offers many good teachers and great parent involvement. My daughter has enjoyed each of her teachers and they've been caring and nurturing which is what she has needed. Their Spanish Program is a wonderful benefit as is their Art Corp program. They also have a wonderful PE coach which all of the children love. A somewhat unique approach taken by Sunset View in the K-1 grades is the rotation the kids experience. I was concerned at first that my daughter would feel uncomfortable leaving her primary teacher to learn with each of the other K or 1st grade teachers, but she loved it. It's a great way for the children to get to know everyone in their grade level and to benefit from the strengths of each teacher.

Good teachers. Good cafeteria food. Extra-curricular activites are not affordable to lower-income families. Too much parent involvement - the students don't need their parents at school every day, as some are. Not all, but some High-maintenance, snobby parents. Unresponsive office staff.

Sunset View Elementary offers a very positive and well rounded experience for children. Because of the high level of parent involvment, there are many parent driven programs available at this public school. A few examples are Fine Arts, Character Development, Running Club, World Language (Spanish) Cultural Support which enhances/supports the regular 20 minute daily Spanish instruction. The teachers and staff are very fine and work closely with each other and parents for the childrens benefit. After school enrichment programs offer a diverse experience. My child has a sense of pride and community in her school and her education is important to her. Through the efforts of teachers at each grade level teaching time management and study skills, she has become a confident and disciplined student.
