We are thinking about a move to San Diego. Can someone give me feedback about schools, where to live and where to avoid?

Hi CJ,

I moved to San Diego about a years ago with my 2little kids from Midwest and I absolutely love it here. Best school dristrict for elementary, middle and high school is Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD). Ashley Falls, Carmel Canyon, Sycamore Ridge, Sage, and couple other ones in the 92130 area code are excellent. Good way to find out which schools are best is by comparing the API test results of similar schools. Numbers don't lie. Del mar is great community to live in especially, if you have little ones. Hope this helps.

Sam or SDmutti,
I am single mom of three boys. We are moving to San Diego. I will be working aboard MCRD. My twins will be 3rd grade and little one starting 1st grade. I want the best school and best area. Education and sports are super important, safety and a healthy neighborhood. Is there a reason I should stay N of I-8 and since I do have a choice where to live what is your #1 recommendation and #1 school as well. I will be the only one to commute. Thanks.

There's a "North County" corridor of good schools that runs up the I-5 from La Jolla, up through Del Mar, Encinitas & Carlsbad and then eastward along SR-56 and into Poway, picking up the whole of the Poway Unified School District. This cuts across many districts - including San Diego Unified (which includes parts of La Jolla), the previously-mentioned Del Mar Union, Encinitas, Carlsbad, San Dieguito & Poway Unified (probably some others I missed.)

My kids are currently attending Westview High School & Mesa Verde Middle School (Poway Unified) and they are excellent schools. Having said that, we have friends with kids at Mt. Carmel HS, La Costa Canyon HS, San Dieguito Academy, Canyon Crest Academy & Torrey Pines HS and those are excellent schools as well. In my opinion, the academic experiences all of these places are similar. I also think that is generally the case at the middle and elementary schools in these areas. All these areas are loaded with families, kids' sports teams, kids' activities, etc.

One of the biggest differences between the areas would be housing prices. In general, the closer to the ocean, the more expensive the house will be (although not always). We found that the Rancho Penasquitos area of the Poway Unified District was the best combination of good schools, housing price, & easy commute for us (my husband works in Kearny Mesa). What works for best for you will likely be a little different.

Hope this helps!
