I have twins that they started kindergarten spanish inmersion banck in August 2013. I was worry about my son, because we had very serious dificulties at pre-school were he couldn't finished. My son was almost every day at the principal's office because his behavior, he not responding to any direcctions from teachers, I can tell you I worked a lot with the school to make my son life easy at school and at home, but nothing looks to work out, this also was afecting my daugther life at pre-school. As they started my son was showing behaviors, that we start working together with teachers, first a bracelete marking faces as he behave every class, did not work but teachers and principal decide that he will have his on desk, that way he will be able to enjoy the class little by little, and it was as a miracle to everybody, my son is able to learn, teacher is able to control the class better and he is more confident as he feel special at his own desk, up today he can enjoy circle time for reading and be focus. I really apreciate the time for the teachers and principal in my son behavior, and also i put my son example to other parents that we have to have faith in our kids. Thanks TECA!
I love the school it has all my son need ,the teachers and programs are much more that I was told love it!!!!!!
My kids love TECA we are so happy to have found our new Principal Ms Lynnh. and our dance class is back. and also our art program my kids are so happy with afterschool program all after school teacher are great specially Ms Rosa and Every Monday and Thursday we meet with our principal in the cafeteria to get new updates and information about all events that will take oplace at TECA.
TECA is proving to be a great choice for our family. My son is in one of the dual-language kindergarten classes and is thriving. He's made great leaps in learning just since the beginning of the school year despite having no prior Spanish. We chose TECA for the dual-language program and the daily arts "specials" classes. What is hard to see on a tour is the quality of instruction and we haven't been disappointed. His teachers are great and the new principal is fantastic- she thinks big while maintaining focus on the day to day. I feel very welcome as a volunteer in the school and there have already been quite a few school community events to allow us to meet other families. For example, we recently completed a small greening project in the kindergarten courtyard which has enhanced the school grounds and will be a great learning tool for the kindergarteners. We're looking forward to our son's future at TECA.
TECA is an extremely diverse school in students, families, teachers, and administration in terms of race/ethnicities, socio-economic status, religions or lack thereof, and the straight-gay spectrum. My GE kindergartner is learning a ton and enjoying it. His teacher is excellent. TECA provides an academically rigorous program balanced with great arts programing. Having a uniform makes getting out the door in the morning super easy. This is a school on its way up and great for parents and families who want to dig in and make things happen. If you want a big, all kinds of people place, this is the school for you!
I have substituted at Thomas Edison Academy and find it to be an excellent place of learning. Students are courteous and very disciplined in their behavior and academics. I rate it 5 stars. Perfection!
Creative and nurturing environment. Caring and competent staff. Community opportunities abound--for students and families alike. I am so happy my son is in the dual immersion class, and is learning Spanish and English skills.
TECA is a great school. My son is in the dual immersioin spanish/english program (native english speaker) and is doing very well. Along with his bilingual education he does 10 weeks each of drama, music, pe and art each year. At recess they have Playworks (google it and demand it at whichever school you chose for your child) which goes a long way toward eliminating bullying and making sure the children get the exercise they need. The cafeteria was recently painted with murals and art will be installed soon. The school was awarded a significant amount of grant money last year for special projects such as greening, beautification and gardening. We have a new principal who is ON FIRE, loves the children most of all and from what I hear demands a lot from but also provides a lot to the teachers and administrative staff. It can be difficult deciding on a school - I feel in love with TECA right away and am lucky that academically and socially it has turned out to be a great choice for my son and for our family. The new kindergarten parents I have met are amazing - they are organizing sports teams and volunteering as room parents and are just so excited to be part of TECA.
My son is now starting his second year at Thomas Edison, and I couldn't be happier with his education there. He's in the dual-immersion Spanish program (started when he was in kindergarten), and attends the school's in-house after school program, too. TECA's staff and teachers are fully committed to the kids, and it shows. And the recent hiring of their new principal a lauded and experienced educator only promises bigger and better things for the school. I'm looking forward to my son attending there all the way through eighth grade.
I love that they have a dual Spanish immersion program. Prent are very much involved and partcipate.
I graduated this year from Edison Charter Academy and I was only there for two years but I can honestly say I loved it there. The teachers there are the best at what they do and they are always there for you, school-wise and personally/emotionally . The students are so friendly and very fun to be around. The school in a very very beautiful area . Great great school. GO PANTHERS !!
We started Teca last year my kindergartener had a great year we loved ms polo and the rest of the staff was absolutely great cant wait to start this year first grade here we come :) oh and we have a brand new principal woohoo !!!
Best school my son learned a lot in year . Great staff and teachers I'm happy that my son is at this school .
Edison is an exceptional school full of committed and hard-working teachers and staff. The school has its own union that protects all teachers. Don't let the vengeful and inaccurate words of a disgruntled (and sub-par) employee cloud the hard work that our teachers, admin, board and staff have put in to make this a great school. Hard work too much for you? You shouldn't be here. Our kids deserve better. Thank you to all the people who put the"community" into our community-based school. Good riddance to those that can't hack it.
TECA is a terrific school. Our son has just finished K and is going into 1st grade and we couldn't be happier with his progress and development. The school has excellent teachers who are all very motivated, and love what they do. The art, music, drama and PE programs are exceptional - most private schools even don't have such programs. The school has an awesome location, building and facilities. The kids are really well behaved. The school does not tolerate any bad behavior. kids are polite, know how to behave even in front of complete strangers. The diversity of the school is remarkable - lending to a well rounded social experience for kids. We started a baseball team last year - which has been a terrific success - building community and the love of sports. Academically the school has been improving its scores every year - and is now amongst the top schools in the state academically. Of course every school has its challenges and areas for improvement. We look at these as opportunities to make the school even better - and the administration, parents and teachers are working together on these areas. The school has a very solid foundation that will enable it to grow and thrive.
This school is falling apart. Admin is no longer properly credentialed after the Board forced the director to resign. They have fired some amazing teachers without cause.
My son is completing his kindergarten year in the TECA dual immersion program. He's had a really good experience at TECA. He has very bright and creative teachers and he seems to feel safe and confident. Some people have only heard that TECA was a charter school nightmare when it was owned by a corporation; but it's a nonprofit now and not corporate at all. On top of the spanish, this school has an incredible arts program. The kids have art almost all year long. They have a "Specials" class every day for about 45 minutes. They take PE, drama, art and music each for about 8 weeks at a time all year long for the whole time they are at TECA. I think the kids get to choose their own specials to some extent in middle school, but they're still there. So my son has three great teachers every day, how cool. TECA also has a good afterschool program with none of the restrictions that other schools seemed to have. Good price for it, too ($325 a month this year). All of the parents seem really engaged and involved.
TECA is great! We have a full-time arts program, caring teachers, a renovated building, on-site After School, better food than SFUSD & no-added-sugar-for-sale policy, a new computer lab, a thriving 3-year old Spanish-English dual-immersion option in the lower grades, rising parent participation & fundraising (but never enough). We have an invigorated Parent-Teacher Committee - I spent 1 hour yesterday sorting TECA t-shirts with other parents, and another 30 minutes writing thank-you notes on Teacher Appreciation gift certificates with yet another group of parents. Meanwhile, Spanish-speaking parents were helping out in the classrooms, testing kids on their Spanish so the teacher can provide individualized instruction to every student. Yes, our school has warts - I did mention not enough $, right? But our teachers are caring people who believe in our mission to nurture "the whole child" and help our kids prepare for top high schools (3 admitted to Lowell last year- huge for our size; & many scholarships to other top schools). Our administrators listen to good ideas, our arts program is unmatched, and our parent participation is way up. Good things are happening here!
Ms. Cook is the best teacher in the world! If you want your child to succeed and love going to school, put them in her class. My daughter was lucky to have her for 4th and 5th grade because she stays with her students for 2 years. My daughter talks about her all the time. Ms. Cook really cares about all her students and they all love her! I am thankful for everything she has done for my children. 100 stars for Ms Cook!
After almost a year, we are still very happy our son is at Edison. We have signed him up for 1st grade. Got an email from friends, wondering what to do for the upcoming furlough day. Ha! Edison is in session, we don't have to worry about missing work or day care.
