a very innovative program. individualized and progressive in methods. solid results. more schools should be like SF Flex!
The leadership at the principal level has really positively changed the dynamics in among teachers and students. I recommend this school to all parents who move to the area.
My Child has grown so much after being enrolled in this wonderful school. The fact that he even talks about what he learned in class, and that he does so with so much enthusiasm, lets me know he's enrolled in the right school. I can send my son off to school everyday knowing he will come back to me safely and further developed as the bright boy he is. I owe it all to the amazing staff and the extraordinary leadership of the institution!
I have mixed feelings about our last two years at this school. It is self paced and most likely 'the way of the future', but the school has definitely had some major growing pains and has fallen short on several occasions in two of the most important years of my son's academic career. There has been theft and technical issues, both causing assignments to go missing or not be able to be completed by the deadlines. I think the teachers and administrators are doing what they can and I think that they legitimately care about the students, but with the student body growing to more than double from last year to this year (I'm not absolutely sure of this, but I think this is the case) there have definitely been issues. If you do decide to send your student to Flex and they are not completed self motivated, be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort checking to make sure assignments are completed on the online account and reading a ton of e-mail (every correspondence between teacher and student is copied to the parent). I don't mind the work, so this has been a very helpful feature. I wish them the best and hope that they get all the kinks ironed out.
If I were you, I would steer clear of this school. The fact that around 75% of the school has a 69% or below is unacceptable. Do not send your child here if you plan on sending him to college.
I left this school for one reason. This school isn't flex anymore. You can't bring laptops home, you can't go ahead in classes, you can't get enough teacher-student time, and there is a lot more unnecessary work than the previous years. It is no longer a flexible school Sincerely, Ex-Student
sounds like a great school, i'd like to know more this isithe way of the future for education.
SF Flex is an innovative environment for individual paced learning. The staff is knowledgable and supportive. The curriculum offers challenge yet allows for flexibility in learning styles. SF Flex provides our student with the perfect combination of freedom to work at his own pace while providing the structure and support in areas of need. The unique school setting offers a welcomed change from the traditional classroom environment while providing the opportunity for teenage social interaction. We are approaching our second year with SF Flex. While there were some rocky moments at the start of last year, we are re-committed to the school, students and parent community because of the strong leadership from Mr. Royce Conner and the dedication of the staff. We are fortunate to have discovered SF Flex and feel that SF Flex is leading the way for the future of education.
FLEX is the BEST <3 <3 <3 Flex has amazing students, and amazing staff! We are the best school! If you want to be happy, and not miserable while succeeding in academics, that means that FLEX is the way to go! I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE FLEX <3 <3 <3
As an educator and a grandmother of school age children, I would recommend SF Flex to parents of high school students. It is a school staffed with personnel who really believe that all children can learn. These well-trained teachers find the students' learning mode and proceed to teach them so they can successfully complete the State curriculum and move on to college, well prepared to succeed. The most important job for parents is to make sure their children are well educated. SF Flex Academy staff are the partners we need in that endeavor. This school has been great for my self-directed, college-bound student. This will be our 3rd year, and we are glad we persisted. The rough spots are getting ironed out, thanks to the great leadership of the new head of school who came on board last January, working with a caring and motivated staff. There is now finally a sense of cohesiveness and stability. With the official institution of a new Parent Teacher Student Association at the end of the past school year, there are great plans in place for activities involving families, students, and the teachers. There are plans which should also make for an easier transition into this type of learning system for those new students and parents/guardians coming in.
SF Flex Academy is truly a great school! :) Being a student from the beginning, I've been through every rough patch the school has experienced- and I can honestly say I wouldn't have chosen another school despite the ups and downs. SF Flex is not for everyone; but if you're a student seeking help on a personal level, motivation, a small environment, or independent learning, this may be a great choice for you. I've gotten to know all the staff and have developed actual friendships with them unlike most schools allow you to do because of a fast-pace atmosphere and too many other students. To be completely honest, SF Flex has gone through a lot in the past two years; but I always see improvement. Since our new principal, SF Flex is finally starting to unleash the great potential it has. For students seeking to be spoon-fed by the teachers, like in some high schools, they often encounter a 'rude awakening' when they realize they have to feed themselves. Staff are always readily available when you need the extra help, but this school prepares you for college life by teaching you independence so that you can stand on your own. I would write more; but alas, there is a character limit. :(
The school has been through some growing pains and appears to be emerging stronger than before. It was a wonderful school for my child, who had been so unhappy at a conventional public school that he had dropped out. He spent 2 years at SF Flex where he was able to have a wide choice of classes and could work at his own pace. The teachers were excellent and dedicated. The smaller size of the school made it feel more intimate. My child graduated with straight "A"s and is going to a good university, which his counselor helped find.
It was a rough start for my children here but with the change in staff and teachers and the new principal things seem to be looking up. I have great expectations for Flex Academy in the coming years.
My son will be a sophomore this year ,he understands how to work well with others and independently.I have seen much growth and maturity . I believe they can keep building momentum.
This is a great school for kids who can handle an expectation to learn more independently. My son was a junior transfer this year--in from an SFUSD high school with very low academic expectations and easy "As". The curriculum at Flex is challenging and my son has found the teachers to be very available to help with questions. He was able to have teacher-student help sessions whenever he needed this year and frequently had sessions with a teacher and only one other student--almost like private tutoring you pay big bucks for! The best thing about this school is the freedom the administration has to be constantly re-evauating their program and how they are helping the students succeed. There is no large bureaucracy to deal with---they are there to bring about student success and provide an opportunity for students to work more at their own pace than a regular public high school can do. I have seen all types of students at this school: low, middle and high performing. They can all succeed. Although a mostly online education is not for all high school students, I have seen my son mature and excel with the support of Flex faculty and staff this past year!
My daughter is in the 9th grade. This is her first year attending. Flex Academy has improved greatly in January, 2012, with a new principal and staffing. The environment for learning and studying is much more positive with new rules in place.
San Francisco Flex Academy is AWESOME!! This is a high school that expects the best of each individual student. Every opportunity is available for every student and if they "get stuck" all they have to do is ask. The floor is staffed with coaches whom are ready to help and teachers are available as well as on-line teachers if needed. S.F. Flex is geared towards the student who is self motivated and willing to move forward on their own (like an adult). If you want your child to be "babied" and pushed along then please put them in a regular public school. San Francisco Flex Academy is PERFECT for the student that wants to move ahead and is able to do so by on their own. If there are ANY obstacles, the staff and counselors will certainly step in to help. SF FLEX ACADEMY IS A GREAT SCHOOL!!
When i first heard of this school i thought it would be this corny good school that would help prepare me for college. This school is not what i thought it would be at all, i haven't been able to do my Spanish work for 2 days now due to technical difficulties and after telling the staff, i don't see that anything is being done to resolve the issue. We have also been missing a history teacher since finals and no one is there to answer my questions about the work. The teachers there are great, but it hard for them to teach 200 students as there are only 4 of them. This school has a lot of potential, but i don't feel like it is being "unlocked" yet.
S.F. Flex has been awesome for my son! He has made new friends and stayed on track with his work load. The staff is very supportive and wants all students to do well. I read some complaints about the school and it just seems unreasonable. This is a self paced school and the students need to be self-motivated to move along with the course schedule. I've never heard of not being able to get a "password" to complete an exam! Never a problem for my child. Also, a freshman wrote in that the class had to write an essay on the first day of school. This is high school!! What should the students be doing? The Head of School and all staff members are very supportive if the student or parents need any help at all. Just ask! This is a school where the student needs to be responsible for him/herself and for their own grades. The students are treated as young adults; not as babies. This is a very good school for the student who is able to work independently and ask for help when needed. I LOVE IT!!!
