S.F. Flex has been awesome for my son! He has made new friends and stayed on track with his work load. The staff is very supportive and wants all students to do well. I read some complaints about the school and it just seems unreasonable. This is a self paced school and the students need to be self-motivated to move along with the course schedule. I've never heard of not being able to get a "password" to complete an exam! Never a problem for my child. Also, a freshman wrote in that the class had to write an essay on the first day of school. This is high school!! What should the students be doing? The Head of School and all staff members are very supportive if the student or parents need any help at all. Just ask! This is a school where the student needs to be responsible for him/herself and for their own grades. The students are treated as young adults; not as babies. This is a very good school for the student who is able to work independently and ask for help when needed. I LOVE IT!!!
This school is a nightmare, stay away! Our daughter is a bright girl and was hoping for a self-paced respectful environment in which to thrive academically. Instead she puts up with abrasiveness and inefficiency to put it mildly. The internet connections are often down, her computer was given to someone else and we spent 3 weeks with her getting a "loaner" each day after waiting/wasting an hour after she arrived, currently her desk space has been assigned to someone else so she goes in there and has to negotiate for a place to get her work done. She has to wait for passwords to take tests and quizzes so there is no self-pacing involved for the students hoping to move ahead. This school clearly caters to the kids falling thru the cracks at other institutions. It pushes the bright kids thru the cracks. Major misrepresentation at the "tours".
This school is nothing they promised it would be. As a student I feel as if I am teaching myself. Teachers do nothing about out of control kids and it is hard to concentrate due to the constant chatter among students that goes unaddressed.
It is really hard to learn. Whenever I need a question asked, it wont get answered. The teachers and staff there aren't there to answer your questions. All they do is make sure you have work to do. And the head of school is nothing but a business man. I still believe this is the future of education, but this school could really use an improvement. (The 5 star reviews below especially the one by the "student" seem suspicious. I don't know any student that would use Hands-On unless they are adults trying to appeal to parents.)
Hello i am a New Parent to Flex and my son and i have had a great reception. My son's concerns were that is non-traditional, I said Yes and that is what I was looking for a place that will take him from the normal and prayerfully help to turn on the light for education.Because i am a teacher i do understand that all children learn differently and with all of today's challenges I needed to find a way to make SURE my son get's what he needs to be prepared for next level learning. So as a new parent to Flex i am excited! And yes i do believe that it takes a Village " we should not give our children to the village" but be in the Village with the schools to insure a great education.
A large increase of students, constant internet problems, and unecessary workloads. By larger workload, I mean very pointless work. First day of high school, and they make us freshman write a college application essay in an hour. I don't know who came up with that idea, but that does NOT teach us students anything. I thought this school would be great, but it isn't really.
I agree with the first review. I went there and I don't like how they treat the students.
I could go on at length but with a 1200 character limit, I will get to the crux of it: The Head of School suspended students for not immediately following orders and showing disrespect. He was either unwilling or unable to explain his rationale beyond saying that it is necessary to maintain the climate and culture they want for the school. We found this climate and culture hostile, punitive, and closed to independent thought. The rest of the staff was (mostly) pleasant but when problems arose, the Head of the School was dismissive and the Superintendent was entirely unresponsive. I believe their philosophy, as it is applied, shows a casual and alarming disregard for the students as human beings and does the students, the school, and the community that we're supposed to be preparing them to go out into a very serious disservice. There are fantastic public schools throughout the Bay Area. Please consider them before sending your child to Flex. If you're still considering it, please listen, not to me, but to them. If what they have to say sets off your internal alarms, ask more questions, dig deeper, trust your gut. I wish I had.
