I want to start by saying that my family experienced the public school system. My older kid is now in 8th grade in a Parochial school, but he attended a very desirable public elementary school for 6 years. My little one entered Kindergarten at SF Schoolhouse this Fall and I couldn't been happier with our decision. #1 REAL Progressive education. They truly walk the talk #2 Outstanding teachers. They want to be there, they love to teach. They are not burned with all the bureaucracy of SFUSD and California #3 Small class size. And it does matter. The system is asking too much from teachers. You can actually teach and dig dipper with a small class. #4 Community. All the schools say the same.... But because we are a small school, it's easier to build friendships. I can't count how many times my fellow parents have save my &^% when I needed help with pick-up time or to take my child on a school holiday #5 One-size-fit all is a myth. Teachers are able to create a personal and vigorous curriculum #6 Well rounded education #7 Motivated, happy, engaged, inquisitive students. Critical and analytical thinkers I can come up with so many reasons. But my experience taught me a lot about what I want for my little kid school experience. I feel so relieved and grateful to be part of this great community.

Our family is about to begin our 3rd year at Schoolhouse and we couldn't be happier. What matters to us? Teachers (they are AMAZING!), that our son becomes an independent thinker, academics, opportunities for social and emotional growth, and a harmonious community of families who are not there for themselves but for the benefit of the children. We have found all of this at the Schoolhouse. And did I mention the amazing teachers? We couldn't ask for better teaching or better role models!

My twins are currently in Kindergarten at the SF School House. We are so grateful to be part of this growing school. Our children are thriving there. They learn by doing, with hands on projects that allow them to move their bodies, learn 3-dimensionally and interact with the teacher to understand concepts. The class sizes are small, around 10 to a class, which allows for more interactive learning and eliminates the need for one-size-fits all teaching. One of the original teachers at our school, who is so incredibly talented at engaging kids, described the teacher selection at our school, saying that teaching is a gift, not just an art. This school truly excels at finding teachers who possess that gift, as well as many years of practicing the art of teaching in a progressive setting to deepen that gift. That, combined with the friendly, open, tight-knit community make this an experience beyond what can be found elsewhere in the city. If you want your kids to love learning, and truly get to know their own learning style, this is the place. The school requires 10 hours of volunteer work per month, this helps tuition costs stay very low, and keeps the parents involved.

We knew we found the right school for our son when we met the teachers. Sitting in those little chairs in each of the classrooms, listening to the teachers tell us what the kids did that day we were sold right there. And 7 months in we couldn t be happier. Our son doesn t reveal much about his days but his Kindergarten teacher, Bridget, sends us pictures often and there s always a big group of kids working together around some interesting project. Discovering. Collaborating. Problem solving. Smiling. Bridget creates an atmosphere that looks effortless, but when you hear her explain progressive education you get just how much thought, passion and experience goes into it. We ll be sad to leave her class, except for two things; we met Rebecca, the 1st grade teacher on that first night too. And she s something to look forward to. And in two Septembers our daughter is going to walk into that same kindergarten class and meet Bridget for the first time. We can t wait. We couldn t be happier with the teachers, the parents, the whole community.

Our son joined the Schoolhouse at the end of 1st grade. He had been at a public school since K, and though the community was lovely, the test-driven, mile-wide-inch-deep curriculum was not engaging him in a meaningful way. At the same time, a friend had started the Schoolhouse with 2 veteran teachers. Joining them took a leap of faith, but 3 years later we are so grateful we did it. We went from battling over nightly homework to watching our son explain what he learned that day. The transformation has been profound. The average student-teacher ratio is 11-1, with a TA for part of the day. Teachers have the flexibility to create a personal and dynamic curriculum. This year's 3rd/4th grade resembles Ms. Frizzle s class in the Magic School Bus series, with tons of collaboration, problem solving, and creative projects. Many schools use the term progressive, hands-on learning. It actually happens at the Schoolhouse. Last year the kids studied homes around the world, and built a house with electricity, running water, and solar power. So cool! Being at the Schoolhouse has been magical for our child. He has gone from a reluctant student to a confident, motivated learner.

This budding school is unique and wonderful, and a welcome reprieve from the crazy expensive privates and public school lottery. Our child is very happy with the dedicated teachers and community, and is getting a well-rounded and complete educational experience. Two thumbs up!

Our 2nd year at SFSH, and we could not be more pleased. The school offers personal instruction to fit the needs of each child. This sounded appealing but seeing it happen was something special. Our child explores and is celebrated for it. The children love to go to school, and they love to learn. A great community.

Based on the vision of its founder and director, this school has made the utopian dream we had for our child's education a reality. The teachers are superlative, the children are thrilled to be there and in love with learning, and the parents are fully engaged and 100% committed to supporting this unique educational experience for everyone involved. We could not have asked for anything more.

We were lucky enough to be one of the 1st families at SF Schoolhouse, Our daughter is in 2nd grade this year, and began at the mid point of her kinder year. The teachers are excellent, and its an incredible parent community. The progressive learning approach as well as the High TEACHER to student ratio has been the cherry on top. This has been such an awesome opportunity to be a part of- our child is thriving & we didn't even need a 2nd mortgage to pay tuition.. GREAT SCHOOL.
