Academic focus and philosophy

Educational philosophy and approach to learning La Scuola uses the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach in small groups to optimize their learning. Our curriculum is inquiry based and is inspired by the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB-PYP). These 2 approaches share a common philosophy: a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that is grounded in creative and critical thinking. The IB curriculum is relevant to the global challenges of the 21st century, which we believe is important for our students.

Social emotional skills development We believe in nurturing the whole child, body and soul. La Scuola teachers and staff strive to create an environment at school that is respectful, open-minded and inclusive. We encourage positive behavior and uphold values that nurture kindness and support of one another. Through educating the whole child, we develop their sense of responsibility to and awareness of others. The goal of this effort is that each child’s innate sense of caring and principle is cultivated and allowed to flourish.
Math skills development Our students are introduced to mathematical concepts by the activities that are offered to them, in the form of blocks & puzzles etc in the younger levels, then, as their interest develops, the older children enjoy counting how many boys & girls in the class & what that total is, as well as counting the number of plates we have & need when setting the table. The older children also enjoy reviewing the calendar each day: counting through the days of the month, and down to holidays & birthdays.
Speech development Our children are exposed to the Italian language at school, as well as their mother-tongue language at home. We encourage our students to sing along to our songs, communicate verbally with their peers, and experiment with the sounds of our languages. Children are invited to speak in front of the whole group in our 'Assembleas', but routinely work in small groups of 4-5 children, allowing them to contribute more to the conversation and ensure that their ideas and voices are heard.
Reading skills development Our children learn reading skills quite organically- when a story is being told with picture books and with labels throughout the classroom. Our children are also encouraged to sign themselves in, starting in the 3yo class, and when that becomes easy, to sign in a friend, exposing them to new letters and sound combinations. They start with recognizing and reading names, and move on to other words and phrases in books. Often, their interest in writing develops alongside their interest in reading.
Typical day and activities Our preschool is Italian immersion. Through their day, the children explore activities inviting all of their senses that encourage them to create, hypothesize & co-construct knowledge. They sit down all together for an 'Assemblea', break into small groups for project and work, have outside play time in our wonderful yard, sit down to eat an organic meal all together, & work through IB framework with a 'Reggio' lens. We also offer specialist subjects in Art, Music and Garden.

Parent involvement details A strong parent community is integral to the success of our school and to the quality of education that children receive. Our community is composed of many nationalities and also reflects the diversity within San Francisco in regards to family composition and ethnicity. Each family is asked to volunteer on one of our parent committees or in connection with one of our fundraisers. There are many ways to give your time and energy for the benefit of our children.
Approach to addressing and preventing bullying La Scuola is committed to providing all students with a caring, safe and supportive school environment. All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect and dignity and share an understanding of their rights and responsibilities. Encouraging appropriate behavior is the strategy of choice for our discipline procedures, and we implement various programs in order to facilitate a supportive school environment which will reduce the risk of inappropriate behavior.
