This is my daughter second year at Aptos. Her first year was outstanding. Dedicated teachers and stable enviroment even though she had a few unrulely classmates. However, her second year is a complete opposite. She has had countless subsitute teachers for her core classes and the unrulely students have taken control. I have to agree with several comments about the lack of quality teaching if your child isn't in the Honors program. Also, I don't understand the reasoning behind putting a student into an elective class they didn't request or one that needed prior experience. My daughter was placed in second year Band when she spent last year in Drama.
My experience at Aptos was absolutely wonderful. I was enrolled in the GATE program, so I don't know what it was like in the classes that were not honors.
I am a SFUSD teacher; was a former paraprofessional; and, am a parent of a two Aptos students in the honors program. One of the most recent achievements is the nationally acclaimed lunch menu items offered at Aptos. The parents, who worked selflessly on developing a nutritionally wholesome, and financially sustainable program, are awesome! Unfortunately, a few teachers' commitment to quality instruction is questionalbe. Parents have an obligation to the/their children to demand accountability regarding teachers who are not challenging their students!
Try to get into the honors program. Other classes have to many loud children and teachers are not as good. The art class is good. you must be involved to have your child treated well. Over all I liked the school and thought the principal did care about the school.
My daughter chose this school first out of all we toured (even though her dad and I hoped for something closer). Aptos was the closest to her experience in her elementary school in terms of diversity, involved staff (including fabulous principal)bright eclectic kids and a smaller size. She and her many classmates from elementary school who also picked Aptos first are having an incredible year. In sixth grade she is learning things I wasn't taught until high school. The arts, music and sports are great. Parent involvement is ramping up as more high achieving and socially active students convince their parents that this is the school for them.
My daughter is in eighth grade honors, and overall has had a good experience at Aptos. The principal strives to create a positive, safe environment for learning. I've seen remarkable dedication from her teachers, and great willingness to go the extra mile when my daughter needs additional help. Because my daughter chose the visual art elective, she has art classes daily . She also has PE every day. Her STAR test scores have improved every year. There are several extracurricular options, including Italian Club, Beta Club, and various sports and special interest clubs. The onsite cafeteria offers healthy, affordable food choices. Aptos is a little smaller, and more racially balanced than most middle schools in the district, and my daughter has friends of many ethnicities. The after-school 'teen center' on campus is free, funded by the YMCA. It's a great place for kids to socialize and to get help with homework.
My son is a 6th grader who came from a very distinquished elementary school. He had to learn how to deal with some 'undisciplined' children in middle school, but overall, he likes Aptos. The principle is great, but like other schools, you have teachers that teacher and inspire and teachers that just go through the motion. He has both kinds of teachers at Aptos, and he excels in the 'inspiring' teacher's class. Overall, Aptos is a good fit for him. While he has had to deal with some 'unruly' kids, for the most part he is having an easy transition from elementary to middle school. The school is small, but it offers everything that a big school has...band, Arts, clubs etc. I give Aptos a B almost plus rating.
Quality of instruction changes significantly from non-honors program to honors. School is imiproving overall and moving in the right direction.
Aptos is a wonderful school to educate your child socially as well as academically. A wonderful choice if u ask me. Diverse teachers as well as students!
this school has the best staff and principal i ever encountered. the envolvement wht the children is for me and my 7th grader is great.
After reviewing the teachers' credentials and credibilities, I decided to enroll my children in Aptos Middle School. A combination of the diverse population, speaking with teachers and other authorities and overall test scores is what enabled my decision. My children have always scored upper percentiles in elementary school and Aptos has honor classes for those students that need to be challenged. This is a great school to prepare students for high school. I highly recommend Aptos Middle School with great pleasure!
My daughter is in the 6th grade Honors program and we could not be more pleased. The teachers are passionate about teaching and give interesting assignments. The school has excellent art and music, and the 6th graders can also take Drama. The physical building is a very cool building from the 30's, with a newly restored beautiful auditorium. Parent involvement seems good and they are seeking to improve it.
Good location but need Good Teacher and strong Principal and also needs parent to participate
I know we are all buzy paying bills and making ends meet. I am a product of Balboa high myself in the day when all was left to the teacher, this was the turbulant 60's. I found no parent participation (a good thing I thought at the time). I am not angry ( I think). Parents: Please Please Please be a part of the most important building block years and do more than you are able to do. Adrian
Aptos has one of the best music programs in the San Francisco School system. The student population is diverse--drawing students from St. Francis Woods as well many outlying neighborhoods.
