This is the best school to me. This is a underrated school. You might think it's ghetto or whatever but they are actually a good school. I would send all my kids to this school
The classes at Balboa are ridiculously easy. Even when I've done well, it really only gave me a false sense of security. I stayed at the school for a very short time and I'm currently attending UC Berkeley. I'm glad I've taken many community college classes while I was at Balboa. I think the teachers should make classes more challeging. Getting into a good college is one thing, but to do well is another story. Balboa may have gotten many students into Berkeley, but how many have done well there?
I am currently a junior at Balboa High School. While there were times I was frustrated with this school, it is not entirely the school's fault. I wish there were more advanced courses and more extra-/co-curricular activities. But we don't. There were times when I felt like leaving this school, that there was too much drama, etc. Yet, so is everyone else at every high school living out the teenage life. What people have to realize is that this is a safe school with enthusiastic teachers. In fact, I am faced with the difficulty of deciding what classes I should take - all my teachers want me to take their classes! Being in a smart school does not guarantee success in life. It is up to the student and the student's parents to utilize what's available at the school. You can find it here at Bal.
I am a Balboa High School graduate, I had a great 4 years and even graduated with honors, yet many times I feared for my safety. There needs to be more parent involvement and security and the community needs to help. My teacher were always pushing me to be my best, I had some great teachers and great experiences. Balboa is a great school and needs more help from the school district to make it better and not worse by making it the go-to school for youth with problems as it has been in the past and still is to a certain degree. If the community makes an effort things can change.
My son attends Balboa and he loves it. The school is very safe; there are no gangs and 'outsiders' are not allowed onto the grounds or in the buildings. The teachers are very enthusiastic and the principal is top notch. Test scores are way up this year and the school shot right past its target on the API for all subgroups. I love this school!
Being an alumna of Balboa in the early 60's, I can say Balboa was a pretty great school. The teachers were interested in their students and their education; there was no crime in our school, and there was pride and self-esteem in the students, partially because of the 'uniform' worn on certain days of the week, which was the navy-blue Senior Sweater, with medals/pins accumulated over the years that only the seniors were allowed to wear, and the ceremony that took place to acquire the status of Senior and hence, the Sweater. Navy-blue or white skirts or trousers and white tennis shoes and white sox were worn with this outfit. The curriculum was strong and good grades were certainly demanded from the teachers and principal. One of our popular school clubs was the 100 Buc's Club. You really had to have good grades to be a member of that club! The Buckaneers was our school motto. My son graduated from 'Bal' in '88 and my daughter went to that school for awhile before we relocated. They both enjoyed it and both were good students. I still have fond memories of Bal. I believe that Balboa hih school is a lot better than people make it out to be. My child goes there and she has no problem, she get A's and B's as do her friends. They don't have to worry about bullys or anything, most of the people at balboa are really nice.
