Burton High School not only has the best Principal in San Francisco but also has the best staff. Mr. Kappenhagen loves to interact with all of us students and his door is always open for everyone. He is just amazing. All of the teachers are easy to work with. If you give them your all, they will do the same to you. They are all very nice and will push you to your limit. I highly recommend joining Navy Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps. Master Sergeant is the BEST instructor in SF and we have the best battalion. NJROTC is one hell of an experience. Not to mention we are the only Navy JROTC school in the district, making us stand out to all the other schools. I love the Puma Battalion and Burton High!

Best thing as a parent of this school is an amazing principle, He works wonders with the kids and my son is NOT one for authority outside the home I know! But he has a wonderful impact with my son, teachers are very proactive with parents who are proactive in their kids education and great support. As a parent I couldnt ask for more.

Burton is a school where academics are of the upmost priority. ALl of the students here put their grades above everything else. They are all so determined and motivated to do well. I am extremely glad that I teach at this school... Watching these young adults progress and succeed in life is the most incredible gift I could ask for. They are all going quite far in life.

Burton has incredible diversity and fantastic after school programs. This is my eleventh year teaching in urban high schools; this year is my first at Burton High School. What a year it is shaping up to be! This school offers clubs, sports, dances, volunteer opportunities, field trips, wellness programs, library services, after school programs, and much more. I am glad I made the move to Burton High!

I am an alumni from Burton High School. I will have to say this is one of the best school in preparing students for college and protecting the students from harm. I have gained a lot of social skills, academic opportunities and leadership skills from this school. Although, the facility is located in a 'bad' neighborhood which I personally do not think is a 'bad' neighborhood there are lot of great opportunities and safety is highly enforced here for the students. Therefore, Burton is a place for an individual to love, learn and lead in one of the most diverse school.

I'm a student in Burton and I have to say it's a good school. Yes, we are in a 'bad' neighborhood. Most would see us and think there are better out there. But the truth is, we've got beautiful people with our diversity and great teachers who love to teach. The school's been hit hard - teachers were cut; languages, APs, honors all cut - but we still prevail and try our best with what they give us. You won't find another school like ours

I am currently a student at Burton and we have too many students in the classrooms. Otherwise, there are some really good classes such as AP Calculus, Academy of Finance, Physics, and all these challenging classes that helps out students succeed.

Burton is a hidden gem. A very safe, friendly school with great academics. Dedicated, often inspired, teachers. If you live on the east side of the city, why waste lots of your kids time riding MUNI to one of those other high schools? A very large percentage of Burton graduates attend a 4 year college; Burton is an academic high school geared to college prep. Suggest you visit - it's a wonderful school and besides it has an incredible view of the bay and the downtown skyline.

Burton has a great core academic program such as A.P. classes as well as honor classes. A great choir touch of class choir that has travel around the world and perform for the best. Parent involvement has grown and where on the move to bigger and better things. We have a dedicated teaching staff. We have great counselors and a uniform policy so that our students don't feel they have to have certain clothes and dress a certain way.The students all know each other and a very diverse student racial.A clean and safe school.

The academics at Burton are there if you are motivated to get ahead, the extracurricular activities are not. There is a new football/soccer field. The AP Biology class is by far the best in the city, the pass rate for the AP Biology exam is higher than lowells for two years in a row. The AP Calculus classes are very good. We use a book that was contributed to by Burton teachers, so they know how to teach from it. This is the first year that AP Chemistry has been offered.

Good academics. Friendly atmosphere. College counseling focuses only on UCs, CSUs, CCSF, and historically Black colleges. Little communication with parents.

As a student at Burton High, I do believe this school is a good one. We are given classes which are needed to go to a UC or a CSU. We also have to graduate with 230 credits. Other schools are able to graduate with less. Burton has a lot of clubs and sports to get involved in. The administratuib could be a bit better. A school isnt good or bad, it just depends how the student goes about their education.

I was a substitute teacher at Burton High School, in 2004-2005. The students are serious about their academic work. There is a nicely balanced diverse population of students. There is a variety of athletics with knowledgeable and talented teachers to bring the best from all the students. They play energetic touch football at lunch, but it is unofficial and unsupervised, so I was advised not to sit and watch it because that might be considered an endorsement of the activity. The main strength of the school is in the experienced and dedicated teachers and administrators. I would gladly recommend Burton High School to any San Francisco student. Jean Womack

There seems to be little parent involvement. I have only attended one parent teacher conference and that only because a teacher called me about a problem she was having in her class and happened to mention it. I have only received information about giving money to the PTA. I have not been told when or where any PTA meetings are held. The only reason I know they exist at the school is because at the beginning of the year I received a flyer asking me to donate money to them. The attendence office does not keep accurate records.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
