My child is an incoming 6th grader at Everett. She was thrilled that Everett offered a step up program for the incoming students to get to know each other and the school and learn more about what to expect. After the first week I overheard her telling a friend who hadn't yet started school that if her school was anything like Everett the other girl was going to love it. That is high praise, but I think it is merited. The students at Everett are taught to aim high from their first day. The expectations for student performance and behavior is clear and it is enforced fairly and consistently. For my daughter this has meant staying after school several times to finish incomplete work or as a consequence for lapses in attention to instructions. This seems appropriate and she hasn't complained as it doesn't feel punitive to her but just corrective and fair. As a parent I appreciate the high standards and their consistent but patient enforcement. I have already seen a changed commitment and enjoyment in learning as a result of all that is happening in the classrooms.

While we have only been involved with this wonderful middle school for about three weeks now, the adjustment for our newly minted sixth grader has been fantastic. It may be too early to say he's thriving, but what I especially love is that he comes home enthusiastic about the whole day and learning. Bottom line, enjoying building high quality lifelong learning skills may be the best outcome that is visible so far. That he's happy, making new friends, and feeling supported is icing on the cake. Our biggest adjustment has been the newly acquired freedom; which unlike elementary school, these kids have a lot of latitude (which is great practice for adulthood).

My son just started 6th grade at Everett, but we spent a great deal of time in the last year and 1/2 attending tours (several times, both parents), talking to teachers, the principal and anyone else willing to talk to us! And I'm thrilled to say that Everett has proved to be as great as we had hoped! The 6th grade teachers are incredible! They are energized, inspiring and get the kids excited about learning. Our son even chose Creative Writing as his elective, which came as a total shock (knowing how he avoided writing in the past!). We love Everett!

I attended this school and was bullied on a regular basis while teachers ignored it, I felt like the teachers would not allow me to study ahead of where we were in class and so I was bored a lot of the time. With the exception of a couple of caring teachers, most of them don't seem dedicated to their jobs. I wished I had had the opportunity to go to another middle school, even though it would have meant a longer commute.

Everett has suffered from a bad rep, unjustified for what is really going on in the school. Because of the affect of the high percentage of newcomers as well as low socio-economic students, the test scores do not appropriately reflect what kind of learning and teaching is going on in the school. My high-achieving 6th grader is happy and challenged and scoring where I would expect in the state assessments. Give Everett a serious lookover rather than dismissing it because of the past reputation.

Everett Middle School is on the move. You'll notice a wide range of reviews below dating back to 2003. Since this time the school has had a different administration almost every year. It is now 2010 and for the first time ever, Everett has the same Principal, Assistant Principal, IRF and counseling staff in place as last year. 17 teachers/support staff have moved on and the building has now been infused with some strong, innovative talent. Structures are being put in place, the hallways are dramatically different . Once a week the homeroom teachers gather their students in Community Circles to address bullying, teasing, racism etc. You can see student leaders monitoring the hallways, planning dances and mediating student conflicts. We now have Spanish Immersion and a PTA. It's an exciting time to get involved with EMS! See for yourself, tours every Wed. at 9AM.

Everett has a vibrant principal and an impressive teaching staff. My sixth grade twins have thrived at Everett and have loved their teachers. The electives are weak especially the music element.

Everett M.S. struggles to educate students,--many not ready to learn & lacking the necessary academic skills & preparation to handle grade -evel material meaningful ways. The average class size for various subject areas (measured in average number of students) often appears lower than many high functioning elementary classrooms. This appears counterintuitive in that the plan is for student levels of independent functioning should increase as they move in to middle school, yet the student teacher ratio at Everett drops in comparison to other schools. The consequences for running amok behaviorally at Everett need to be reviewed because a school that cannot foster a high regard for self-conduct among it's students will already be set back in terms of it's academic performance. Students who rise above the environmental issues & still succeed are truly exceptional. Three years, 6-8 hours daily at this school would not have served my daughter well.

Even there is 'violence' in this school but it is also consider a good school. With all types of students from gang members to 4.0 Students, this school is full things that you cant see from a regular school, where everyone is perfect, expect to get a certain grade, over here at everett we are different! different for a change!!! this is a student speaking proudly about Everett middle school!!! I dont care what you say about Everett, all I know is that Everett is a good school!

The discipline system is ineffective. Teachers are credentialed, but lack the skills needed to modify the extreme behaviors of several of the students.

This school is one of the best public schools I have been to.The after school program is helpins myself and my peers.The parents at my school is getting more involed in this school,that is something positive here at everett.our music class is great,but some students cant have that choice beacuse they have an extra math class or english class.

The teacher obviously try for the most part. However, the kids still run wild there. I think the teachers need to make more of an effort as far as encouraging the children and giving them incentive to do well. As it is the kids there don't seems to care about school.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.

  • Afterschool offerings include Academic Support, Recreation, Enrichment, Cooking, Skateboarding, Biking, Art, Field Trips, and Computers.SFUSD ExCEL afterschool programs ensure involvement of teachers from students' schools to make sure that after-school academics are aligned with the school day curriculum. Every school with an ExCEL program partners with a nonprofit community-based organization to run activities and build bridges to the neighborhood.

Summer program 1

About the program
  • Each program has an academic, enrichment and physical activity component. The programs are based on a youth development model and include project based learning activities. The summer programs are operated by community based organizations that are contracted by SFUSD to provide the services based on grants to the school from California Department of Education. Each organization has a site specific enrollment process. Priority enrollment goes to the students from the school site. Students from other SFUSD schools are eligible to apply though in many of the elementary schools there is more demand than available slots. Funding changes year to year and program offerings change.
