My son attended Garfield after we were declined from Alamo. At first, this selection was based primarily on the rising test scores achieved by the student body. The student body is comprised of many local residents who implant the importance of academic success early in the child's life. The staff and administration (Principal is a Harvard alumn) at Garfield appear to have a clear and pragmatic viewpoint regarding their circulum; score well on the standardized tests. There is not a lot of fluff here, if you abide by the philosophy of first learning your ABC's and 123's and then working on humanities, then this is the place. If not, look for Claredon, Clare Lienthal, etc as a better option. There is a core philosophy here that serves the focus group- immigrant children who aspire for the American dream.
Garfield is an excellent school. The curriculum is challenging and consistent, the teachers are enthusiastic and engaging and the parents are involved but not overbearing.
Garfield is a nice neighborhood school. My impression is that the administrator and most of the teachers are working hard for the kids. My gripe is that the curriculum seems totally geared toward getting the kids to score well on the state mandated tests. This takes away from the real learning process. This is the reason we pulled our child out of the school.
