Unless your kids are Gate, they will simply get passed over just to graduate. The counselors/admin only call parents when there is a problem. Not a lot of positive interaction. No tutoring or 'free' after school opps - I questioned them about this several times w/absolutely no help/concerns/recommendations. No library! I don't feel this school has properly prepared them for high school. I feel the school or district should have offered me help to increase grades. Mine graduated, but barely! I don't recommend Hoover - it's not necessarily better than AP or Aptos. If you have $-send them to private-I definitely would have, but I wasn't able.

This is school is the best. The sports activitys are great and the soccer team is one of the best im almost out of hoover and im going to miss it so much

Excellent school for its size and number of staff. However, the academic program sank to its lowest quality specially in English, Math and Science. This school isa prime example of disconnected achievement!

This school rocks! The teachers are great and so are the students. The 3 years of my life there were great that is why now in high school I miss it. Go to this school!

This is a very good academic middle school but large class sizes make for a somewhat out of control social environment and negative social experiences for some children - my son was one. We had problems with teasing and general meanness. I think kids who are very socially adept and confident will do fine at this school We have switched to private school. One of his teachers was superb, one was not, but he learned a lot. There is a lot of 'grunt' work. Expect many hours of homework, some of it really tedious. It is unfortunate that 6th graders are kept out of the newspaper and chorus, where they can find their niche and their social home.

Kids are well-rounded, most whom are involved in school activities. It is pretty much a peacful community at Hoover, teachers vary, of course, some giving more attention to students than others. However, overall one of the best middle schools in SF.

An overall great school with a near perfect curriculum. Would definitely recommend this school to anyone and everyone. Hoover is a big school, but all the kids seem to know each other. Teachers are nice, and care about you; and the prinicpal is wonderful.

Hoover is a great school for dedicated students and their children. If you want a school that expects a lot from your child and gives a lot in return you will be very happy here. My daughter has been here for two years. She is very shy and studious. She has felt welcomed at Hoover. Her hard work is valued by her teachers and respected by her classmates. She has found a good group of like minded friends and enjoys the environment.

This school has been a big disappointment. It is probably fine for most kids, but our eighth grader needs accelerated learning opportunities which have not been available. Its outstanding music program dramatically deteriorated while my child was here, so that it is at best mediocre currently. The special advanced algebra class for 8th grade was cancelled just before he reached 8th grade, and the caliber of most of his English teachers has been shockingly poor. It has therefore given none of the advantahges of a huge school, with all of the disadvantages. I can recommend it only in contrast to most of the other public schools in the district.

  • Stonestown YMCA provides enrichment, recreation, academic support and field trips everyday after school.SFUSD ExCEL afterschool programs ensure involvement of teachers from students' schools to make sure that afterschool academics are aligned with the school day curriculum.
