Marshall is a school with a heart. Is is a lovely oasis in the Mission. Very tight knit community of staff, teachers, and families. Most of the teachers are native spanish speakers and have been at the school for many years. Several send their own kids and grandkids to the school which speaks volumes. The principal is smart, tuned in, and very engaged. It is a small school so he knows each kid and family personally, including their strengths and weaknesses. He is there playing with the kids in the mornings and afternoon and is very committed to the kids' education and development. Most of the families are Spanish speaking so the level of immersion education is tremendous. It is one of the only (maybe THE only) immersion school where the kids speak Spanish to each other on the playground. There is a strong core group of parents who are very activated. There are always parents at and around the school keeping their eyes out. The PTA has been working on fundraising. There is a wonderful Dia de los Ninos celebration every year in the spring -- it is currently more of a community event than a fundraiser and new energy towards fundraising would be good.
I wanted to point you to the correct address for the school web site: https://marshall-sfusd-ca.schoolloop.com/ Our daughter is in kindergarten and so far, we love the school.
This is our 4th year at Marshall, we have two children and have been very happy with our experience. Marshall has very dedicated, experienced teachers and staff with very low turnover -- many that have children or grandchildren at the school. Marshall s principal provides strong leadership and has an open door policy for parents. We have a strong and growing PTA and supportive parent community. Marshall is a hidden gem with programs like Odyssey of the Mind and its Spanish Immersion program is one, if not the BEST in the district!!
It is a great school to learn spanish; teacher are helpful to parents
Marshall is a great little school in the heart of the Mission - the community comes together across language lines to support our children becoming bilingual, bi-literate and ready for success in the world.
Marshall Elementary School is a diamond in the rough. The administration and faculty have created a warm, welcoming, positive learning environment for all kids and the community. The students are actively engaged and enthusiastic about the learning that occurs in their classrooms. It's worth a look if you are looking for an immersion program that goes above and beyond in many ways.
First and foremost Marshall E.S. has a year-round science focus, which makes it academically interesting and sound. Furthermore, teachers are focused on vocabulary building and reading comprehension through and through. There's a great deal of student exposure to music, sports, civic engagement, and fun extracurricular activities. The school benefits from a strong partnership with St. John's Tutoring Center, a local non-profit that works with 120 students year-round, summer included. There is also a strong cadre of volunteers present during the regular school day and after-school. This is great, dual immersion environment for children to grow and learn.
Marshall is truely a 'diamond in the rough.' This ELD school is committed to providing the academic and emotional needs to its diverse student body; well qualified teachers, dynamic principal and great parental community.
Marshall is a great, little school in the Mission with Spanish immersion and a science focus. I have two kids there and we are very pleased with the school, from the very receptive principal, to the supporting teachers to the parents and volunteers. Like many other schools, Marshall suffers from underfunding and rigid testing requirement. However, the parents and staff are finding creative ways for enrichment programs, such as chess club, capoeira, dancing (the school is in SF's Carnaval Parade for the first time in 2007!), and lots of science related field trips. At Marshall, my kids are in the kind of environment that prepares them well for the future, and they are enjoying it!
Marshall School is a hidden gem in the Mission. Its small size -- 250 or so -- means most of the teachers know most of the students. This means a lot more than test scores in terms of real education. (I predict that test scores will rise in the coming years.) Its Spanish immersion program has taught my English-speaking 8-year-old fluent Spanish. Afterschool activities are available for all children through two channels. The first is St. John's incredible, free program of extracurricular academic help, athletic activities, and even capoeira. The other are parent-teacher-run activities such as chess club and Odyssey of the Mind. The school's also been featuring an extremely popular wood shop class for kids, as well as dance instruction. But I think my favorite part of the school is really the warmth and friendliness of the teachers. We actually arrived at this school by chance and really love [it].
Thanks to parent involvement this is a good school. The teachers are wonderful and committed but the principal is new to her job and seems overwhelmed. Test scores have declined since she took the helm two years ago.
