This school is an amazing school! Kids here get exposed to the opera, the symphony, jazz, dance, art.. there's even a garden for science. The teachers can be hit and miss like any other school, but there are so many programs that support the curriculum that each child gets a lot! The new principal is great and the the school has a welcoming attitude and teaches the kids to accept differences. We love it.

We feel very lucky to be a part of this unique school and fabulous community. This school is about the big picture, not just test scores. Children here come away with a well rounded education and are part of a richly diverse student body that represents the city beautifully.

While the elementary school is good, the middle school is just awful. By the time the kids get there, they're in tight cliques--not the school's fault, but the school's response to this is just awful. They try, but it's all lip service. Except for one or two good teachers, the middle school is very mediocre. There are no honors classes so some kids are either very bored or over stretched. It's easy for mediocre students to do well here if the teachers like them. If I had to do it again I'd definitely take my son out after elementary school.

It comes as no surprise that Rooftop is one of San Francisco s favorite schools. A caring community, a thriving art program, stellar academics, a diverse student body (more than any other public school in SF), smart teachers, centrally located and what s not to love about programs such as sensory motor and nature science in the garden. Rooftop is a wonderful environment for kids and parents.

Rooftop is a wonderful community of faculty and families. The diversity of the school is embraced and celebrated. The incredible teaching staff are gifted, creative and committed; the parents outstanding in their donatiion of time and skills. The incorporation of the arts is incredile, permeating instruction across the academic spectrum. In addition to the academics and arts, each month a different core social principal is observed - strengthening our overall social structure of our community. Definitely my favorite school!

Rooftop makes it a priority to have diversity in the student body and the staff. The teachers and all involved are dedicated and committed to providing a good education for the students as well as preparing students to be respected and respectful members of the community. There is much emphasis on good communication skills and dealing with difficult situations. The school offers a well rounded education with everything from gardening, to cultural activities, to art, to music and top notch scholastics as well.

I love the fact that Rooftop is very diverse and that it's not only academically challenging but also creatively. The student there are taught how to respect each other and how to shine. The teachers are great and it has a very private school feel for a public school.

About the tests


In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
