We are so happy we got into Sherman! My daughter is in Kindergarten so we've only been there a short time but already, we have met a welcoming parent committee, and could be happier with the curriculum. We were going the private route but when I toured Sherman, reality set in and, frankly, found a better value going to Sherman. they have an art studio with a full time art teacher, chorus, gymnastics tought by a professional gymnastics teacher, computer, library with a full time librarian, PE, gardening with a full time garden teacher and a full time nutritionist which carefully screens the meals served at school. Overall we are over joyed to have found such a school.
This is a great school that offers a strong core academic program and an excellent array of enrichment programs. As a longtime parent with two kids at Sherman school, I can attest to the wonderful progress this school has made under the leadership of the principal Phyllis Matsuno who sets high standards for staff, students, and yes, even parents to reach! She has brought in enrichment programs and increased test scores every year she has been at Sherman. Kudoes to her for her commitment to our kids. The teaching staff, with a few notable exceptions, is committed and excellent. The school building and grounds are spacious, clean, and well-kept. This is a top-notch school!
After all the stress of the enrollment process, whew what a relief to find Sherman! As a kindergarten family, we keep finding out more to love about this school. Ms. Matsuno is amazingly creative with bringing additional resources to the school -- be they volunteer nurses students or high school kids tutoring reading. She's also led the way for public and private schools with technology in the classroom with 'smart white boards' (connected to the Internet) and the 'Mind Institute program.' Our green schoolyear is a breath of fresh air in our urban environment with fruit trees, vegetables, and a fish pond that delight the kids. We love our kindergarten teacher. The parent community is engaged and active in making our school even better. We're very happy with our choice.
Sherman is an excellent school with an exceptional Principal. As incoming kindergarten parents this year after visiting many schools, we chose Sherman for several reasons, but primarily because of Principal Matsuno. During her tenure Sherman has become one of the highest performing schools in the district. In addition to a strong emphasis on academics, Sherman offers its students gardening, painting/drawing, dance, choral music, gymnastics, computer lab and physical education, among others. The principal considers these to be necessary core curriculum for the children, and not just frosting on the cake. Over the course of several visits to the school, we were struck with her dedication to contiually evolving Sherman in the best interest of its students. Her drive and focus are admirable. We continue to be impressed with her, and feel that she is not only approachable, but is consistently willing to extend herself in an effort to address the needs and concerns of parents. She is a frank person, which is a refreshing and often lacking quality in persons who occupy leadership positions. For us this has inspired both respect for her honesty, and trust in her follow-through.
Sherman is a great school with a great principal. Mrs Mastuno has helped me out on a number of occasins and very easy to talk to. She is very direct and also very caring. She works very hard and has set the tone for a great school. Most of the teachers are terrific and gifted with a few slackers who are the exception. Check out this school
We're very pleased with our choice. Rumors about the principal are unfortunately true. She is difficult--headstrong, can be exceptionally rude and unresponsive to parents, and not always engaged. If you can look past that, and you should because she is expected to retire soon, you'll find lots to like. The school is headed in the right direction despite the need for new leadership. The teaching staff is excellent. Parent involvement is strong and growing, with an active PTA.
Amazing jewel of a school. Strong academics (API scores rival Lilienthal's), lots of enrichment (art, music, computer, dance, gymnastics/PE, gardening etc), stellar principal(pro-active educator/leader who also knows each child), enthusiastic warm parent participation, esp in K-3, beautiful spacious bldg & new gardens/waterfall. Toured public & private and glad we chose Sherman. Educated professional families have discovered this jewel, some selecting it over privates. We like Sherman's energy -- school is clearly on an upward trajectory -- as well as the true diversity that we found missing at some privates and publics, in different ways. Pleased w/aftercare; we were initially concerned that on-site care is for grades 2-5, until we found that a number of the programs that bus Sherman Ks & 1st graders were superior in quality than some of the on-site programs elsewhere. We consider ourselves lucky that our kindergartener is at Sherman.
Ms. Matsuno, the principal, has done a superb job in converting Sherman from a good school into a great school. If you walk through the halls and yards, you see a fully functional library, a PE coach on the grounds, students in chorus and art classes, a student-mentoring program on the yard, gardening, great parent involvement. All of it developed over the past five years under her leadership. Teaching staff is excellent, too, but it can vary within each grade level.
As parent of a student with learning disabilties, I had good fortunate to find Sherman school. The special education program is a large part of school and my son's teacher is, high energy hard worker, and fun. The principal seems to do avery good job and the staff is friendly and is compotent. The building is cleanest school I have ever seen. Thank you to Sherman School.
We cannot say enough, as parents, about the high quality of leadership and it's result on academic performance and the learning environment at Sherman. We have done extensive research in the SF School district and found Principal Matsuno to be the best of the best. Our experience over the last two school years bears this out. The superbly hard working PTA has provided the school with funds for arts and technology resources. Without them, and the tireless grant and funding seeking of Principal Matsuno, Sherman would be yet another school adrift and underfunded in the SF School System. Best of all our child loves his teachers and we think they are doing a *great* job in the difficult SF School System environment. The ratings and improvement scores show the quality of their work!
This school has a strong academic emphasis with teachers focused to help the students achieve successfully. The upper grade teachers, especially the 5th grade teachers, show great leadership skills while preparing rigorously, both physically and academically, their students for middle schools. I am looking forward for my child to be learning with one of these teachers.
I am a first grade parent at Sherman Elementary in San Francisco. Principal Matsuno is a treasure and fantastic role model for the children. Amazing teaching staff and principal work as a team along with strong PTA. Thanks to all of them, children have benefit of excellent art and music programs. Wonderful ethnic diversity another plus. Beautiful 'green' schoolyard in progress. A real feat in an urban environment. Only drawback is too much homework starting in K-garten!
We are delighted with Sherman Elementary School in San Francisco. Our son has had a wonderful Kindergarten year, and is excited to start first grade in Fall 2006. The Principal, Ms. Matsuno, rocks, and the teachers are creative, engaged, sensitive yet firm (especially helpful with our rambunctious guy and his posse!) The core curriculum is excellent, and the additional music, dance, art, computer etc. classes are really stimulating the kids to
Academics and most teachers are quite good. Parents in the upper grades (2-5) aren't nearly as involved as in K&1. Principal Matsuno is terrific. The greatest drawback about the school is a lack of community. An adequate, but not great school.
We have found this school to be an exceptional school for SFUSD. The teachers are bright and enthusiastic. The parents are highly involved in the school program and fundraising. It is as close to a private education as you can get in SF CA USA. There are some really great programs attached to the school-like afterschool for parents that actually work and can't pick their kindergartener up at 1pm.
The school overall is very good. It is cleana dn as well as teachers, the parents take pride in it. My son's teahcer is excellent but I had a problem with a teahcer in a past but the issue was resolved.
This is an awesome school. The prinicpal and staff are very helpful and great communication. Parent participation overall is good, yet there still needs to be more parent participation as this is our childrens school.
This is a very good school. My son did well here although I have to say that he was marginalized due to his minority cultural background because the school is mostly Asian. He had a difficult time socially. Academically the school is very good and the teachers seem competent.
