The demographics of our school has changed recently. There are many more parents involved in the PTA in the last 3 years. They have made an incredible effort in recruiting more families who understand the home-school connection. And in doing so, they have made the school more attractive to other parents willing to share the workload, so that no one person feels overwhelmed with responsibilities. Everyone contributes in any way they can, and everyone in our community benefits from each person's knowledge, skills, time, and resources. For example, parents have installed two beautification murals: the 'Sunnyside' one at the entrance and the Peace Wall. We now have classroom gardens, and recently planted greenery surrounding the school. As a public school teacher, I believe that the vast majority of teachers are dedicated to their jobs. So, what makes great schools stand out from the rest? It is the amount of parent participation. Sunnyside is quickly gaining popularity among the other highly-requested elementary schools.
This is an amazing school! Diverse students, dedicated teachers, a great principal all add up to great learning for kids. A ++++++ !!
My daughter is in the K and she loves her school. Her teacher is great and she also loves her classmates. We love to see there are many more parents involved in the PTA. Only a warm, sweet school can make kids love to go to school everday.
The staff is great and the PTA is works hard at making improvements for the school. I love that the school is small and parents are very involved.
Sunnyside has excellent teachers, a caring staff, an abundance of enrichment activities for both students and families, and a terrific and diverse student body. It is everything I wanted out of an elementary school in the city.
Small neighborhood school, great teachers, great parent community, and my daughter likes it so much that for her a day without school is a day lost.
Sunnyside Elementary is dedicated to the advancement of our children and the active participation of local community. The teachers and staff work together with the parents to find new ways to motivate our children to achieve success in their young lives.
Small yet diverse neighborhood school. Wonderful teachers and active parent community.
Sunnyside has a terrific staff. The students work hard. It's a small neighborhood school with a great community feeling.
Marcus is reading - in Kindergarten! Full books, no help. He writes on his own and loves going to school! The yard is full of energetic, healthy kids and his teacher has created a wonderful, respectful learning environment. The PTA is energized and the community is growing full of strong, smart and caring parents. I know that the SF school system has its faults and that there are many schools to choose from, but if public is your choice and you're near the Glen Park, Sunnyside districts, Sunnyside school is a great choice! We couldn't be happier :)
My family has been at Sunnyside for many years. I have a 1st grader, 3rd grader and a niece. I appreciate the many hours teachers work overtime so that my kids get their needs met and they make learning fun and exciting. All the teachers deserve the credit for the caring environment and discipline in their classrooms. My kids feel safe in their classrooms, but, recess and lunch is different. They tell me some kids are bullies, and even when they tell the principal during lunch, nothing happens. She has no discipline skills. So many parents complained, she even had to write a response about her discipline on the yard. But, my kids are still telling me that nothing happens- she just tells the bad kid to stop- that's all she does. That's unacceptable!
We are about to wrap up our first year at Sunnyside and couldn't be happier. The teachers and staff as well as the involved parent community have been so caring & dedicated during this transition from preschool to kindergarden. Our class has a very co-op feeling - everyone looking after each others interests and our son loves going to school and learning. What better way to start off a child's education.
In the past few years the principal has made a concerted effort to hire young, energetic, committed teachers and it shows. Parents have gotten involved to support the staff, raising money to try to compensate for the shameful lack of support education in SF is receiving from the city and there is a tremendous spirit of involvement and dedication. It's a 'sunny' place.
Sunnyside is a great place to work. We have a wonderful group of teachers and paras and support personnel who work well together. It is a small, neighborhood school with a diverse population. We have been able to provide music, dance and fine arts and science education along with the regular curriculum.
Today my youngest child was assigned to Sunnyside! I am so happy both my children will attend a school with a small community feel. There are so many involved parents, dedicated teachers and a Principal who has created an educational atmosphere that provides students with a strong foundation in the three 'R's' in creative ways. The large increase in test scores (almost 70 points) last year shows that the efforts of the students, teachers, and Principal have really paid off.
There is no leadership or open communication with the principle .The school is sloppily run and seems to be the principles forum to be dictatoral.the environment is stressful to children. Many serious concerns are not addressed and are dismissed. This is not a school i advise due to my own experience
