St. Stephen is an excellent school with an amazing staff! My eldest daughter was accepted into one of the top schools' in San Francisco and continues to flourish academically due to the fabulous education she received at St. Stephen. Our children are trusted to what can only be described as THE BEST!
Excellent teachers--all very dedicated to their students. The school has much to offer the children. This has not changed over the years. The past administration was very compassionate and represented a prime example of Christian leadership. This sadly cannot be said now. Harassment by the principal towards her teachers is very obvious to anyone who participates in St. Stephen's school life. Faculty and staff work in fear of offending the principal on a constant basis over imagined issues.
We are very pleased with St. Stephen's school. We are a middle class family that is new to the community. We have never felt as though we were not welcome as a valuable part of the parish or school. I have to agree that a strong parochial school must have aggreseive fundraising in order to offset the low tuition. We are pleased with the acadmic program. Our child has made leaps and bounds in the classroom There is a solid science and computer program. What has impressed me most about St. Stephen's is the community. We feel that we really have an extended family at school and at church. Parent involvement is key to the success of any school.
St. Stephen School is the best school for our children. They are receiving an outstanding education and are treated with respect. St. Stephen goes the extra mile to ensure our children are safe and happy. Mrs. Allen, our wonderful principal, has been the leader with our 'Bully Free' program and it has proven to be very successful. Mrs. Allen works closely with her staff to make sure each child is given the tools to succeed. She and our pastor, Father Walsh, make an incredible team. You can feel the strong bond between school and parish. We are very fortunate to be able to say this. Parent involvement is key at St. Stephen. We all donate our time and talent and good things continue to come from that. The students love Mrs. Allen and she continues to do her best each and everyday! We are so blessed!
Two years after I arrived an energetic principal with a strong point of view and an even stronger work ethic replaced our retiring staff. Despite declining enrollment and drooping morale she rolled up her sleeves and invigorated the school experience. Test scores and high school acceptances rose, not tuition. Instead, she instituted fundraising to support academic improvements. Moreover, families that might not be able to afford higher tuition are able to contribute through participation in the volunteer program. Recently, the parish has undertaken the construction of a new gymnasium facility to offer an extra curricular venue on par with the academic program. Given all of the positive changes instituted by our principal it disappoints me to read disparaging reviews.
To accomplish great things you need money and determination. Sometimes these qualities are not always appreciated by those who benefit the most. I feel blessed with a quality catholic private school education in an environment where the public schools are not an option. At one-third the cost of other private schools I understand that my participation is essential for my children s success.
St. Stephen is a wonderful school with a strong academic reputation. The principal has made a number of progressive changes. A groundbreaking 'Bully Free' program promotes an environment of respect and acceptance. Religious studies have been reinvigorated with an emphasis on studying and living the Gospel values. Tuition is among the lowest in the San Francisco Archdiocese, which makes St. Stephen affordable to a diverse group of families. There is a high level of parent involvement as families share their time and talent with the school. The school is part of St. Stephen Church, a strong Catholic community with a rich history. School events are also parish events and attract many of the older families whose children graduated from the school. The pastor and the principal work together to create a welcoming and supportive community. We love St. Stephen!
Teachers and staff are excellent. Many have been at St Stephen for many years. Their experience and sincere love of children is very obvious.
The teachers, staff and principal demonstrate their committment to the children every day. The very devoted and involved parents support that through outstanding participation which allows the staff to focus on their duties. I have only positiive reviews for the principal and staff. That stated, the principal has a tough job as many parents, not necessarily children, have unrealistic expectations and impressions. Downside, the class size and playground.
St. Stephen's is filled with parents who are dedicated to their children's success and are willing to go that extra mile to help at the school. The school's downpoints are related to staff. While the school has been touting a bully-free environment for the past few years, it has hardly made a difference.
Very good parent support, very good teachers and support staff, but the school doesn't have a good principal. They need to replace her ASAP!
St. Stephen is a wonderful school. The principal is absolutely fabulous. She is always visible any time of the day. I see her greeting students in the morning, turning the jumprope at recess, and waving good bye at the end of the day. The community here is like no other. When you ask for help for anything...your phone does not stop ringing. People here really care about making a difference in their children's lives. All that makes up for the large class sizes and lack of a playground structure, which to me are the only cons. St. Stephen is truly a place where your child will receive a high quality education, make good friends, and will be more than just a student number.
We love St. Stephen School. The teachers are absolutely fabulous. There are 2 credentialed teachers in kindergarten. They really work as a team with the kids and provide an excellent foundation. The science teacher for the lower grades really gets those kids excited about science. There are also music, art, computer, and p.e. teachers for all the grades. The junior high teachers are departmentalized which is also a plus. The principal stands outside every morning and always has a kind word for each child and younger sibling as they enter the school. There are CYO sports for the older grades. The younger grades participate in outside sports leagues as grade level co-ed teams. It is a wonderful community environment for the kids and their parents. The spagetti bingo and breakfast with Santa really bring the school community together. St. Stephen is a true GEM of a school.
St. Stephen is a great school when it comes to being united as a community. The principal started 4 years ago and has made drastic changes for the better. She has made a lasting impression on the children but not quite as approachable when it comes to the parents. There are extracurricular but not worth the extra monies you have to pay. Sports is the best extracurricular activity because you have dedicated parents participating. As a community, they do come together and unite for a cause, this aspect of St. Stephen is by far the best I have seen in such a big city. It is a very closely knit community and I've yet to see another in SF like it.
Wonderful family environment for my children. Very strong level of parent involvement to help maintain the high level of the academic program. Long time, excellent teaching and support staff, and of course we have an incredible principal whose motivation and commitment gets the most out of everyone involved.
