Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Sadly, we had high hopes for this school. The academic standards are high, however I cannot say the same for the faculty. Many of the teachers are inconsiderate, brash and uncaring to say the least. When we left messages with our concerns for the principal to return our call to discuss our personal experiences in detail, we never got a return call or email. It amazes me that being polite and professional is simply not a consideration from the top down. Very disturbing and concerning for many of us parents.

The teachers are great and the extra curricular programs are second to none. The kids are given great opportunities to supplement standard academics with music programs, plays, lunch time sports, and after school science. Exceptional parental involvement creates additional opportunities for the students. I can't think of a better learning environment.

This school is the best. The parent participation is unbelievable. My daughter loves to return there every year. The material she's learning in 2nd grade is material I didn't learn until years later. The kids really seem great, and the teachers are energetic and enthusiastic.

I love Silver Oak Elementary School. Two of my children attend that school and my 3rd will be attending in the future. Our school is a California Distinguish School and A National Blue Ribbon School. Silver Oak has one of the highest API scores in San Jose. I love how there are a lot of parents so involve with the school. The teachers are great.

My 2 kids are in this school. Sometimes I think the school's requirements are not reasonable. For example, for 4th grade's mandatory science project, every student has to come up with an invention or innovation. And the kids have to come up with the idea in 2 days (from requirement sent home on Tuesday to proposal due on THursday).

The school has a lot to offer in addition to high test scores. It encourages overall development and extracurricular activities in addition to academic achievements. The school was built in mid-90s and the facilities are new and modern. Classrooms are equipped with high-tech equipment. The school is located in a country club and the kids all come from well-to-do families living in the country club and 2 surrouding housing developments, with parents who care very much about the kids' development. Environment is nice and safe. Parent involvements are very active.

My son who's in 2nd grade likes the school and teachers. However, if you re a single parent or both parents are working it's hard to keep up with all the homework. There is lots of it, and then there are extra assignments that they have to do along side the homework. It's extremely difficult to have family time in the evenings when your child has 1-3 hours of homework a night.

Some teachers are better than others. Too much emphasis placed on learning to do well on standardized tests and not enough on learning the basics. Principal does not seem to be very responsive in dealing with issues that come up with children on an individual basis. Children seem to have to fend for themselves especially on the playground.

If you want the quality education of a private school with the cost of a public school, Silver Oak is the best way to go. The main demographic of hte children are from high-middle and upper class families. However, the school is very demanding and thus if your child is not very efficient at their studies, they may be spending more time being a student than a child. Teachers are excellent and parent involvement is unmatched in my opinion.

Silver Oak is a good school if your child does not have Learning Disabilities. My son who has ADHD, was made an outcast by the majority of his teachers from 2nd to 6th grade because they did not have the skils or concern to teach him. Since he has left Silver Oak, his performance has improved dramatically. We felt the attitude in the school was that kids that were not low maitainence were often labeled, and really struggled to be successful. Also, there is a large amount of HW and projects that is above the childrens potential, and the parents end up doing the work for the kids to ensure that have good grades.

My three daughters have or are attending Silver Oak and we have been delighted with the teaching and environment at the school. There are no grades in the first 3 years which was different having come from Challenger School but this didn't seem to cause any motivational problems.

First, level of parent involvement is extremely high; Silver Oak Educational Partnership raises money for a variety of programs. In addition, volunteerism is high at all levels, academically and in extracurricular activites. Academic programs are strong, with the school achieving high scores in STAR, etc. Extra centers such as science, are taught by parent volunteers, who do a fair amount of research and put a lot of effort into it. Silver Oak has been a blue ribbon school, and continues to achieve distinguished status. Music, art, and sports programs exist, but are not very well developed. There's a lot of other well run extracurricular activities hhowever, such as the school plays.

Silver Oak Elementary has provided an incredible education for both of my children. They continue to score very high on the California Standards tests. The PTA is very active providing many educational, social, and community events. What truly makes Silver Oak stand out is the huge number of parents that get involved in the classrooms, allowing Silver Oak to provide many additional hands-on sctivities in the classroom. Parents raise large sums of money every year to provide extras like Spanish, funds for a drama program, teacher grants, technology for the classrooms and the library, PE equipment, etc. We are very pleased with this National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished school.
