Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This is a great school. Our daughter has a number of challenges in learning and the staff/team who work with her are amazing. She's doing really well and we couldn't be happier. Every day is still a challenge for her but she's feeling very successful and happy so we're thrilled.

This school needs a whole new front office staff. The two secretaries need to be replaced or trained. They are there to serve the public school parents paying their wages. They need an honest to goodness how to talk with parents and kids. Any accidents the kids have at school interfere with these secretaries and principles down time to twiddle their thumbs. Honestly very sorry human beings spchildren have to think twice about before reporting an injury.

My son just started Kindergarten, and he enjoys being a Bobcat! The school is well run, and teachers very attentive. My son was having some trouble staying focused and completing his work, so the teacher took the initiative to inform us and work out some strategies together. I'm pleased about the early intervention, and hoping he lives up to the excellent standards of this school. I also like how involved the families are with fundraising and outside activities. A lot of care all around.

This is our first year at Baker and my daughter is in Kindergarten. We are very pleased with Mrs. Smith and find her to be kind but also not put up with my daughter's nonsense, which we appreciate and support. Wonderful to see so much parent support and awesome fundraising. We are looking forward to more years as a Bobcat!

This is our first year at Baker Elementary. My daughter's teacher, Mrs. Smith is amazing with the children. So far any concerns I have had have been addressed immediately. My only complaint is the class sizes for Kindergarten are 24/1 which seems a bit much but I am glad I can volunteer and help out were I can.

I have 2 boys, one is in the 4th grade who has been going to Baker since kindergarten & my other boy is in kindergarten now. All I can say is that the teachers at Baker have been very supportive & have gone out of there way to help my oldest son when he would have trouble with a subject & take the time afterschool to help. The amount of parents that help out at school just should show there appreciation & importance of what Baker School means to them & there children. Thank you Baker for teaching my boys on what they know now & what they will learn later! MF

I really like the mix of kids and how nice the kids are. Mrs. D and Mrs.G. Miss Iwamoto is especially nice. And all the other teachers, too! My kid just joined in Miss Iwamoto's class and she dreads the weekend!

I have recently transferred my children from a very good private school. I have to say that I was very nervous about the transition. I now believe that I could not have made a better decision. I love Baker and more importantly my children love Baker. The staff has always been so friendly, and the principal is very approachable and always seen around the campus interacting with the kids and smiling. Go Bobcats!!

Great Job! Bobcats! You got whole school score @ 929 in the state API report , with the subgroups asian, white and hispanic 994/944/843 respectively. It had been stayed around 905 for years, we finally made big progress this years. We have great teachers, great students and especially great principal! We always have great activities, events and programs in school! We also need to be top in academic score! We made it! Thanks for the whole school's effort last year! It works! So excited! Thanks for all subgroup's efforts too. Your great work makes the whole school move!

Baker has maintained high API scores and standards in education despite the tremendous influx of students over the last several years. Any "concerned" mom will be impressed by the teachers and staff treating each student with kindness & encouragement. Many teachers volunteer their own time after school to bring various opportunities to the school & its student (i.e. chorus, science fair, young authors faire, talent show to name a few). Even if your child doesn't fit into any of these typical niches, Baker teachers seek out what motivates & inspires their student to excel. I volunteer at the middle school and have noticed that Baker alums are prominent in the advanced classes, student council & extracurricular activities - they leave Baker confident & prepared.

It was surprised that Baker was good before by read the old reviews. And the API score was 903 in 2005. That was very high during that time. Why now it is still around the same level, but most other schools in santa clara county had great improvement in recent years? --a concern Mom

The teachers at this school are amazingly good. We have a nice slice of the general population, so nobody should feel out of place. The administration, teachers, and parents all work together to make Baker a fun, safe place to cultivate friendships and a love of learning. We are so fortunate that this is our home school.

I love Gussie M. Baker Elementary School because it is not a &parent participation' school, however they have the most wonderful parents that donate so much time. This neighborhood school is loved by it's local families! The teachers are extraordinary and enjoy their jobs. My daughters teacher this year is amazing! She hugs each and every child in her class before sending them home at the end of the day. I've never seen such a happy place to be. Go Baker!

Baker has a fantastic sense of community from kids to parents to teachers to administration. We love Ms. Lim in Kindergarten. We love all the parents who seem so involved with volunteering to help in all aspects from parties to crafts to copies. It is a hard decision if we decide to move because we will be pressed to beat the Baker atmosphere and curriculum.

My daughter is in her second year at Baker and I have been really happy with the school. She started in First grade and comparing it to the school she went to for Kindergarten, Baker has a much more warm feeling to it. The parents and teachers are great. My daughter loves it and so do I.

My daughter is about to complete her Kindergarten year at Baker. She has a wonderful teacher who is responsive to any emails I have sent and she is a great role model as well. My daughter has learned a lot more than I expected she could and would in Kindergarten. Her curriculum has covered everything: writing, reading, math, science, arts, P.E., computers. This year they did morning and afternoon Kinder classes (3 hours and 45 minutes) and I would have liked her to have a longer day, possibly starting half-way through the year, but I don't think they physically had the space. (I heard Kinders might be doing a longer day in the Fall.) I feel a strong sense of community there, with the parent involvement, the teachers, staff, and principal. The Moreland onsite after-school program is also excellent.

We moved to San Jose hoping the school was great based on the reviews. Its been over 6 months since my son started and our experience with the school has been going from down from bad to worse. The class teacher is not so involved with the parents, she has had 5 - 7 times substitutes and she seems less interested and worried about the kids. Although the principal is great and the other office staff is good. Concerned Parent

My years as a parent at Baker have been overall, a great experience. The teachers are some of the most gifted educators as well as very caring toward our children. The current principal is awesome! She is a strong leader & very involved with all aspects of the school, as well as frequently interacting with the kids. There is a high level of parent participation at Baker. We have a media center & the best librarian, a computer lab with an excellent instructor. We have the most fantastic performing arts teacher ever with frequent grade level performances! Instrumental Band & Orchestra is available to 4th & 5th grades. Extracurricular activities include Choir, Science Fair, Talent Show & a variety of classes offered afterschool. The annual Catwalk we hold is not only a fun-filled day but also shows the commitment of Baker community to keep important programs going through our fundraising.

Good staff. The parents are very envoled. The down side is the the district spends too much on non-teaching facilities. The money could be better spent on the students than new district offices.
