Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The principal is wonderful, and the majority of the teachers alright, but the "yard duties" are complete idiots. They do not respond to student complaints, and are very ignorant. The school can do very little to curve bullying, which is seemingly everywhere in the school. A sizable portion of the school's mentally disabled are in mainstream classrooms, and do not succeed academically or socially in their classes, most are ostracized and bullied to depression (same with much of the schools mainstream population). The parent community their is very ignorant and do not care about the bullying (in fact, the school's cornerstone program's parent members usually have children who bully, thus only worsening the situation..

Lucky to live in Almaden and have such a great local school. My son did private K-4, but we decided to go "local" for 5th grade last year. I only wish we had done it sooner. Graystone cares about their kids and the parents are very involved which makes it a nice community environment.

Graystone has a great principal and caring and involved teachers. This is all wrapped in a community that cares about quality of education and is not overly obsessed with academic performance. There is a nice balance of academic excellence and social development- with programs to support. Many great schools get there because of test scores, at Graystone social development is as valued as academic achievement - which I think is core to elementary education. This is the time to love to learn. Our experience has been that when working as team (parent, teacher, administration) Graystone works excellent.

For me, an excellent school doesn't mean they are good academically but how the school can solve the problems what parents face at their school. I tthink Graystone is one of them who really care about your kids and want to listen the parents' concerns.

I've withdrawn my child from Graystone due to the fact that the school was not as diverse as it seem. I want to give my child a true experience of our world where she will grow up to live, work, and respect differences in life. Graystone is too concentrated with mostly two races, particularly one race that drives up the test scores, giving the public a false sense of the true overall rating.

I am a proud parent with two children at Graystone. I would like to share with other parents how particularly impressed I am with one of the programs at this school. It is called Roots and Wings. What I have found to be very valuable about this program are the morals and values that it teaches our children. Values such as mutual respect and kind treatment of others are reinforced in the classrooms on a regular basis. I am happy to see the support of this program from the school administration and involvement from the Graystone parent community.

There is alot of anger exuding from the posting 9/30/08. I have my second child in Graystone, and have not witnessed outrageous rudeness or meanness. There are always a few children who push the limits, but they are disciplined promptly according to SJUSD standards . If your child is having problems, go to the teacher, and, if that does no good go to Principal Dave Beymer. If by some wild chance nothing is done, go to SJUSD. Volunteering in your childs class shows your child and classmates that you are present and active. That may decrease the bullying of your child . I work, but can find an hour or two a month to work in my child's education. It is easy for some adults to sit back, complain and call children names. It takes caring and fortitude to effect change. Anonymous complaints with inaction maintains status quo. Take action.~~~acw

Graystone Elementary is a wonderful school! The principal is wonderful and the teachers are too. My child had not even started to read before kindergarten,so we expected her to struggle a bit.But do to this remarkable school she can now read at the top of her class, High school level! She has also learned to love to read and writes beautifully. I can always find her nose buried in a book. Graystone is a miracle!

We moved here from a small, private school and I was concerned about my kids making the transition to this (much) larger school. However, the environment is such that the transition was fairly seamless. The staff and children are very welcoming. Academic standards are high, but they should be, given the demographics. Due to budget cutbacks, most of the programs are parent-run or Home & School Club funded. Fortunately there is high parent involvement and the means to support these programs with resources and funds. Overall, we are very happy with Graystone.

Academic programs are high at this school. Personally, I find the expectations of the students too high for kids of this age. Learning to play the recorder is available for 2nd and 3rd graders at no charge. Art is done in class thru the parent volunteer program called Art Vista. Parent involvment is high at Graystone. Teachers are kind; I feel the push on their end to meet district standards a bit overwhelming. Principal Beymer is always open to meeting with parents and helps meet the needs of the children. If you have highly producing children this could be the school for them.

Graystone cultivates a very nurturing environment - especially for such a big school, the kids are remarkably kind to one another. I personally think the kids could be pushed a little harder - I don't find that my daughter has to work very hard to do well, and I fear she gets praise even for work that's not her best. I think this is improving as she gets older, though. I'm glad to see a new principal this year, who seems very good so far; overall very good teachers. In short academics are strong, but not remarkable given the high-achieving kids they have to work with; however, the overall culture at the school makes it a very healthy place for kids to develop.
