This school is not what they seem to be. Teachers inflate grades, and do not get involved in students that are struggling. How does that help a student ?? We are defiantly taking our child to a different school next year.

Bret Harte was great for my two oldest children. You see, if you are "normal" you are welcomed, appreciated, care for, and supported. However, it was hell for my high functioning autistic son. He was handcuffed by the police in campus, that were not informed my son is autistic, for refusing to sign a Vandalism citation he received for verily visible writing his nick name ADRX on the cement side walk with a little sedimentary rock he found on the ground, as others students were doing. He was placed in the emotionally disturb class, even as he IS NOT emotionally disturb, and has never had that diagnosis from ANYONE! The principal Mrs. Cindy Mijaila, was heard by me on the phone at the district office saying "I just want him out of here." So my beautiful, intelligent baby was bullied in that class, and neither the school nor the school district provided the special need services he was promised on his IEP. He calls Bret Harte "Break my heart." So if you are normal, and fit the normalcy profile, and you do not have a disability, you are welcomed, but if your child has a disability stay away, the school district negligence, will truly break your heart.

45/100 teachers/staff are alright, but the students and parent community of the school are appalling. Bullying and student hierarchy is rampant, and the teachers are either unable to intervene (in fears of instigating a poor reaction from the parents) or just don't care. The lunch isn't exactly superb either. Would rate 1 star and a half.

Three days in, and loving it so far. Great teachers, moderate homework, and lunch that doesn't taste like cardboard. Haven't had any trouble with bullies so far. Then again, most of this is due to being, you know, three days in. Will post update once I've been here longer. -Bret Harte Sixth Grader

Bret Harte Middle School is an excellent middle school in San jose because of their academics, and school spirit. If you are looking for a good school pick this school because you won't find a quiet, peaceful neighborhood/school. The administration is excellent in conducting their duties.

I love that the teachers love my kids. It is hard not to love them (totally bias of course) they work their tails off doing homework and getting good grades. I love that the teachers are computer savvy and they respond in a 95% to my requests and my E-mails. But most of all I love that being such a stinky parent myself, and so darn picky, and demand excellence, the Principal has such patience, and always has a beautiful smile on his face. He is very open and helpful. Always, always open to my demands, and to give me his time. I wish I can participate more in the school, but I think my kids appreciate the independence, and feel embarrassed because I am too friendly (they say, of course I do not think so) Homework is of a good size, but again so is life. Thank you for being supportive BH.
