Star is an awesome school for children with Learning Differences. The classroom teacher:student ratios average 2:11. Great consideration is given to individualizing educational plans for each student. The teachers are highly qualified and very dedicated. Having OT, Speech, Social Skills, etc. specialists onsite is a big plus. I would like to see more emphasis on an integrated life skills program for the high schoolers. Overall, Star is on its way to becoming the preeminent LD school for K-12 students in the Bay Area.

Star Academy (1st gr - H/S) has a wonderfully low student / teacher ratio. (Currently my son is in 11th grade with seven students and 1-2 full time teachers). Addressing different learning styles and attention issues is Star's primary focus and is built into everything that happens both in and out of the classroom. Specialist services (Speech/Language, OT, etc.) are offered 1 on 1 and/or in small groups during the school day (both pull-outs and push-ins) and the specialists often incorporate the classroom lesson plan into their therapy so that the student is not missing classroom content.

My daughter was very fortunate to spend several years attending Star Academy. It gave her the support and foundation she needed to be successful afterwards in a large public high school. What was really impressive and helpful about Star's program was the 1:1 work with specialists - the secret sauce of the program - AND all the support she ALSO had in the classroom. The teachers and specialists were very competent (important to me) and VERY kind, nurturing, and supportive (important to her). I am indebted to the program and staff.

They are a fantastic school for children with learning differences. The staff is amazing. They are nurturing and kind, with a true love for the children. They give the children real success and future.

Star Academy has moved to its new, lovely permanent site in San Rafael. My son with dyslexia, AD/HD, and social cognition deficits but a high IQ attended for three years. Star specializes in appropriate education for students with complex learning disabilities. The unique strengths of Star are the specialists who work onsite at the school: Occupational Therapist, Art Therapist, Lindamood-Bell, Slingerland, Speech and Language Therapists, and the specialized curriculum: Making Math Real and Michelle Garcia Winner's Social Thinking curriculum. Star is a gem for most students with learning disabilities. My son learned processes that now help him in public high school.

About these ratings

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
