HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is excellent , Im sure the API score is going to go way higher as I see lot of Asian & indian kids inflow(the usual driver of scores) . Being an Asian my self i push my kid a lot on studies, this school works for me great as the curriculum is clearly structured and the kinder garden teacher is very helpful in following up my kids progress in studies. More emphasis is given to creativity here and structured learning . On family get together we usually have competition within our kids where adults ask questions on science , math etc ... to grade our kids :) My other 3rd grader who has been in this school since kinder garden is as equally progressed similar to his private school counterparts in my relatives who has been through challenger and stratford. Im sure the API is going to skyrocket to 900+ pretty soon. Good luck.

Kathryn Hughes Elementary is a great school. They have very good, knowledgable, and caring teachers. They have great technology in the classroom: smartboards in every class and soon tablets for all the students... thanks to a partnership with Altera. Mr. Ricardo the school custodian is awesome and super friendly (reminds me of Gus, the custodian when I went to Hughes many many years ago). The Front Office staff is friendly, professional, and extremely helpful. There is a new principal, Ms Miranda. She had BIG shoes to fill with replacing Mr Keegan but she is proving to be a GREAT addition and asset to Hughes. Ms Miranda seems to genuinely care for and love her students. She is focused on education, community and parent involvement. Continuing partnerships with nearby technogy companies like Altera to get our students and teachers access to cutting edge technology typically not seen in a Public school. Reaching out to parents to be active and involved, the best schools have high parent participation. I particulary liked "College Day", shows me that she is focused on our kids future beyond just elementary and preparing them for a bright future. Go Hammerheads!

My two kids love their school, and so do us parents. They are so proud of their school that they would talk to all their friends about the dedicated teachers, the new respectful principle, and this year, the Cub Scout! Yes, our school has cub scout meeting where boys meet three times every month on Friday. Thanks to the parents who volunteer and dedicate that boys learn the most precious skills while having fun which will benifit them whole life!

Hughes Elementary is a great school. Our new principal has big shoes to fill but has been doing a nice job. She believes in parent education and talking to our kids about college. She wants to do what's right for our students. She works well with our PTA. She has gotten many bikes donated for students this year. She is trying to get a cover for our outside lunch area so our students don't get pooped on and a new digital sign for the front of our school with our proper logo on it. I don't agree with a previous comment about a bias towards the Spanish speaking parents. That's absurd! It's sad to me why anyone would feel threatened by her trying to make them feel included. Overall, a nice community with caring teachers, staff and principal.

The school in general is a great school. All my three kids started to this school. With new technology in place, the students are well advanced than students from other school in the district. The teachers are very much involved with the kids and very nurturing I wish that the school district would spend some more money to expand the school, fund music program and other school activities. One less star for the new principal She is not involve as much ad she supposed to be. If her predecessor is still there, I would give a five star. Kudos to Ms Durand, Mrs Tang, Mrs Vazquez, Ms Katzen, Mrs Williamson sndMs.Allan. .

My kids have been attending Hughes since kindergarten 4 years ago. And we've always loved the school, until recently. There seems to be a general consensus among involved parents that the new principal is completely unknowledgeable and proving to be an ineffective leader. She is isolating her involved parents by showing an extreme bias for her Spanish speaking families, which is ridiculous because an overwhelming majority of the families don't speak Spanish! Losing love for this school fast.

I have 3 grandchildren. The youngest will start the 4th grade 2013-2014. I am so glad my daughter moved very close to Kathryn Hughes middle school. My grandson was very sad that Mr. Keegan left the school. Mr. Keegan sure knows how to run a school. Others should not "Think" about this school, but join. The other 2 now are attending Buchser middle school. Went through all 5 grades at Hughes elementary school. Have no concerns about Hughes school.

Hughes Elementary is a school to be involved with or have your children attend if there are in the local area. I have had my oldest daughter attend Hughes since first grade. Over the years, I have seen how the Administrative Staff, teachers and principal work closely together to utilize the resources available to them (even through the most recent challenging times). I am very happy about their YMCA After School program, all options for preschool available, Playworks and Leadership Opportunities with their Sports, Cheer and Student Council they have. I am also proud to say that thanks to the Niners and local large corporation(s), Hughes has received grants and support of technology and other opportunities that other public elementary schools in the district may not have access to or that these children would not have access to otherwise. The childrens' test scores continue to go up with the efforts of teachers and motivation of parents and faculty. I would like to continue to see the parents and community involvement to continue to beautify the school and $upport in every way they can with fundraising and volunteer opportunities.

A school with brighter future.. Altough Kathryn huges have a score of lower 700s when my kids initially joined, i see the techers and principle are all very responsive and take care of the kids very seriously. I have confidence this school will soon join the high 800s in score and maybe reach 900 if thing turns well. The only thing that concerns me is the higher number of students per class due to the limiated space avaialbe and goverment budget cut. I hate to see that the school have to let go nice teachers. What a shame the US goverment is funding oversea endless battles but have to leave students and teachers out of school. Overall, i have confidence that Kathryn Hughes will be a new start in the forsee future.

Kathryn Hughes is an excellent school, from the admin staff at the front desk especially Mrs Wilson to the dedicated teachers, and the very committed and energetic principal Mr Keegan. We relocated from Europe in July 2010, Kathryn Hughes became our local school. Both I and my husband not to mention my two children were very anxious about the whole move but most of all about switching to a totally different school system. We need not have worried as the teachers and staff at Kathryn Hughes made the transition for both my children a very pleasant one. Both children had excellent teachers in the 2nd and 5th Grades and the progress we saw in both was exceptional by end of year. Both my children made great friends as the children are very friendly and went out of their way to make the new kids feel welcomed. There is a great balance between strong academics and social/sporting activities, which only contributes to preparing well balanced children who confidently move on to their next steps. So well done and thank you Kathryn Hughes, may you continue to grow and prosper as well you deserve.

This is an amazing school. Great principal ,great teachers and great administrative staff. I have my 2 kids here, a 5th grader and 1st grader, they've been here for last 2 yrs and I have not had any problem. Infact both my kids are doing great. The teachers work very hard with the kids to help them in any kind of way. Whenever I come to the school, I always see Mr Keegan(Principal) walking on the corridors to check on the students. He is doing a great job and trying hard to get more and more new programs for the school. The scores of the school have gone up and I am sure we will soon be in the 900 API. Though I think the parent involvement in this school has to increase a little bit more then this will 'The Best' school. I would recommend this school to every parent. All the best

I have three kids in three separate K classes at Hughes, and we benefit from all three teachers' style and teaching skills. Everyone at the school is motivated. The principal, the admin staff, the teachers, and the cafeteria staff are all genuinely care about the kids. The school has many programs to encourage kids to learn, to read, to play music, to exercise, and to involve with the community. Everyday, when I drop the kids at the school, there is a group fifth-graders helping to open the door, greet, and help out the kids. A parent goes by and ensure the kids don't run, or put on their hood if it rains. A teacher is also there to direct traffic and ensure the kids safety. The school is also starting the parent-participation program where parents put in 4 hours per month to help with the classroom activities. I wish I can have more time to contribute. I also will bring more crayons, paper, books, home-made projects to the kids classes. That way, I will not have to worry much about all the budget cuts.

The scores have gone up tremendously at this school in the last year. We now are in the 800's api and we will soon be on our way to being at 900. I would recommend this school to any parent who is thinking about moving to this area. The principal and the teachers are the top of thier field. Everyone here including all the parents are very nice and help each other out.

I am a parent of a now 2nd grader and 3rd grader, my kids started last year here at this school, my older daughter had started her 2nd grade there, but she would always say 'that is was easy for her' I had a talk with the principal because I needed them them to challange my daughter in every aspect, because at her previous school so was always willing to be challanged, but he suggested that I challange at home and for the teacher do so, but they did not challenge, even her teacher suggested I put her in a private school, so what was I going to expect from that.

My child has been in this school for third grade. I don't see any improvent in my child accademically. He is at the level he was when he entered. After so many months now I am going to have to work on him over the summer. No homeworks at all. This school is just like having a babysitter for few hours and when you are back home you have to teach your child everything all by yourself. I wounder what teachers do all day in classes. They don't even use textbooks in classes. What are they doing? Waisting ours and our children's lives' precious time to learn and absorve so much at this stage. This school is messed up. Couty superintendent should check on this school's staff. If you got high dreams for your child who has the capacity to be somebody big this is not the school for yor child.

We just moved here in mid June. Although my husband attended Kathryn Hughes when he was young, I am new to the school system. So far the teachers are great and the principal is on top of everything. I always see her walking around campus making sure everything is in order. The school also focuses on healthy eating and activities, which is so important. The only con I notice so far is that they hang their backpacks outside. That is a concern for me because I see that the kids also put instruments and their jackets outside. I don't know how they are able to watch them all from being stolen or tampered with. I'm thinking some of them might have personal info, like their address, name. Other than that its a great school.

There is no excuse for this school doing so poorly. The structure in the classroom is poor. There are no awards or recognition for academic achievement. No sports, music etc. The teachers apathetic towards their students. No programs for children that can excel at a rate that other schools perform at (meaning all the children suffer because they cater to the disruptive children).

This school is trying to achieve overall development of the students. But I guess because of the shortage of funds it requires all the more effort to get the target achieved. So far as the quality of accademic programme is concern I would recommend the school to prepare the student to be more serious about their study once they are back home by giving the homeworks daily. They should also keep track of the study materials they have covered already. They should try to make the students little more serious about their terminal exams by setting specific goal to be achieved. The school should make this sure that the syudents have text book for all the related paper at home also ,whether the school provides or the parents buy it for their children. In some of theclasses the class teacher have more than 30 students which should be not more than 20.Otherwise it has a nice environment.

The principal really made an effort to be available to everyone at all times. The teachers are equally approachable, too. I guess, the school needs to have extra curricular activities especially in sports. The library needs improvement on the number of books since the city library is far from this school.

Our son is currently in 4th grade and has been attending Kathryn Hughes since Kindergarten. I feel that he is in 'good hands'. The school offers a safe and nurturing environment. The teachers are very engaged and loving. The only downside is the lack of extracurricular activities, e.g. extra academics, sports, arts.
