The students and teachers seem to really care. Parent involvement is very high, as is principal and teacher involvement.
This school always has great holiday programs that the kids participate in. Both of my kids went there and really liked it. The parents are really involved.
Riverside has a wonderfully involved parent population. They do soooo much good work and provide so many extras for the kids. Tireless fundraising. Campus is a warm place to be for both the children adn the parents. People are aproachable and friendly.
Both my daughters have attended Riverside and I have been very impressed with the dedication of the teachers. They have afforded my children many enriching experiences while teaching them the skills required for future academics. My only complaint ( and it's more with the state and district than with the school) is there is too much importance put on the CST scores. This usually leads to more homework than should be given to young children.
Riverside High School is a great neighborhood school. I do recommend that a high level of parent involvement will ensure that your child gets the most out of his/her experience. Over the past several years, they have added some nice upgrades to the campus. Scouting opportunities exist here and there is a good level of an active neighborhood involvement.
In the seven years I have been at Riverside Drive, the one constant I can count on is the quality of the teachers. With no exceptions, every teacher my children have had, has incorporated enrichment and individuality into the state-wide required educational program. The school as a whole strives to bring additional enrichment into the school day. This is done through the outstanding fundraising efforts of the parent body. No school is perfect, however, we continue as a community to work on improving all areas. In particular, safety, health and physical education resources on campus.
We were very disappointed with the staff in 2005, took our child from 1st grade and went private.
Riverside dr. Is a school with a bright future... We had a very active pta and parents for team this last session, this year will be even better. I am a parent who works full time, and I make time to get involved. You have to do that in the public school system. We need parents to help through out the year, however they can. There are many opportunities to help, and it is so fulfilling. Fundraising is important with current lausd budget cuts. Our principal is heading into her second year with us and is supportive & driven to get the kids whats best for them, and improve scores. Nothing is perfect but what a fun goal, to help our children and our teachers get there by doing it as a community of caring, watchful parents that a principal can count on for support. Team work is essential.
Great school in every way. I love that the parents are able to be very involved with the differant activities. The teachers seem very dedicated and enthusiastic in the upcoming years.
I think it is a great neighborhood school. My daughter only attended kinder, but had a great learning experience. It has wonderful parents and the kids are great. I think it honestly needs more community support of the area.
I am so pleased with how Riverside is being run 'this' year. My daughter is in the 4th grade and has attended the school since kindergarden. She has started her own homework club and 'always' has her homework finished before I pick her up. She is motivated to succeed.
I heard great things about Riverside Drive but, I am very disappointed. I don't feel that the quality of the teachers or staff is that great. My daughter is being picked on and the teachers don't do anything. I have a hard time having the teachers return my phone calls. I plan to pull my daughter from this school and move her to another.
Small group of Parents and teachers run this school. They turn their heads and deny the bullying and teasing that exists. They use intimidation tactics to keep parents quiet. The School spends months teaching only what is on yearly tests in order to increase their test scores, rather than teaching kids what they need to know. If you contribute a lot of money and volunteer for everything, your child will receive preferential treatment. My child transfered to another school in 4th grade and was way behind because what was being taught to him at this school was way below grade level. School spends so much time fundraising and doing extracurricular activities that there is no time for learning. Fundraising is a non-stop weekly, if not daily event. Dig deep into your pockets if you want your child to attend this school.
I must point out that the cuts at school are not due to the principal, but rather the LAUSD. Parents are frantically scrambling to make up the $30,000 shortfall (of an already stingy budget!) with creative fundrasing events, such as our recent Comedy Night to help keep a paraprofessional on the K yard, and the school-wide Yard Sale to help purchase Science Kits for the classrooms. We just won the District C School Beautfication Award which is primarily due to the work of many hardworking parent volunteers who have made the school a better place. Our Literacy Garden and Parent Center open shortly and will enhance the school even more. There is a new, rejuvenated PTA Board in place now (I can say that, I was on the old Board!) and all I can say to previous posts is, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
Dissappointment is a gross understatement when describing this school. Under this principal the school has slipped downhill. Not only was art, music and p.e. cut. But now it's rumored that computer lab is getting axed. Too much emphasis is on sitting quietly in seats, rather than on academic acheivement. Lately, it feels pointless to even do homework. The kindergarten hasn't recieved promised yard equipment, while 1-5 graders are left on hot cement with little to do and no enough supervision, as yard watchers are cut. The principal also is not parent friendly. If she looked upon parents as a partner she'd get more volunteers for fundraising ideas and the like.
My children have attended Riverside Drive for some years. I am greatly disappointed in the fact that there has not been as great an increase in api scores as other elementary schools in the area. Parents concerns falls on deaf ears as far as principal.
I think there is tremendous parent involvement at Riverside Drive. There is a lovely new library, PTA and Parents For organizations. There are many avenues for involvement. There are after school activities including a homework club. The previous principal was wonderful, but the new one just seems just fine. My fifth grader has had a great experience at Riveride for the last 5 years.
I have a son in first grade and a daughter in Kindergarten - and think Riverside is wonderful. The teachers so far have been great. Everyone has to keep things in perspective and that all schools have politics. Parent involvement is limited, but only due to the fact that many of us have to work full-time and there are alot of single parents.
We have been at Riverside Dr. for five years and have found the teachers to be exceptional in their dedication and ability. The new principal has brought an archcaic school into a new begining. I have been involved in many fund raising projects, room parenting and the new library project. All have been fantastic experiences for my family. My child has been with the same children since kindergarten and is having a wonderful school experience.
