We love the after school activities. I think the parent evolvement is fantastic too. My daughters loves it.
Riverside Drive Charter School There is a lot of heart at this school. The devotion of staff and parent volunteers is astounding!
I love Riverside Drive Charter Elementary because they have provided a safe and fun environment for my daughter, she enjoys the different classes, the teachers are great and the parents really take time to become together in helping the school.
We are really happy with the experience that our children have at Riverside Dr. The teachers and administrators really do care. The school has after school activities and pizza sales. Allot of parent involvement. The school is kept up vey well from the inside and outside. The janitor does a great job. Proud to have kids that come here.
I love the quality education given at Riverside Drive and that it is a relatively small school for this area. The teachers are wonderful and committed to their students. The parent association is really great, as is the afterschool programs they offer, but I wish more parents would get involved with the school and fundraisers.
Riverside Drive Charter Elementary School has amazing families who are very involved in the school. The teachers have been at the school for a long time and are very dedicated in making sure the students learn what they need to. They are creative and innovative. Both of my children have gone from Kindergarten through 5th grade and it has been a very wonderful experience.
Riverside is a fantastic school! The Principal, Ms. Doucette, is wonderful and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. There are only about 600 kids at Riverside and the charter caps enrollment at 640 so it will stay a nice small school. I like that there are a lot of really involved families and a very active parent group. We have a dedicated Science Lab, a Drama Club, a formal Arts Program, a computer lab and a school garden. Most of the teachers are really great. We have lots of after school activities and classes for the kids that they love. My daughter is in third grade and has been there since kinder and she LOVES her school. We have been very happy at Riverside.
We are very happy at this school and feel a sense of community. The staff and teachers are kind, supportive, and engaged.
Very poor school management including the new principle. I would't recommend this school to anybody.
Hi, this is my home school and I'm on the fence whether to send my child here. I have heard many mixed reviews but a huge question I have is every time we drive by, the play structure is yellow taped off! What is the reasoning for this? It has been well over 6 months...
We are so fortunate to have the teachers and principal that we now have. Our school has now returned to its usual 8 rating, and we have won several awards since we have gone Charter! The school's challenging programs provide our students with a better education. Especially with the encouragement from the teachers and their availability for extra time with homework the last elementary school we attended did not offer as much challenge, and they offered no help. Riverside had a few bumpy years, but it is back on track with engaging extra-curricular such as computers, theater, chorus, art and PE. Our family feels very lucky to have all this and more, considering the times. We love living in this neighborhood where our kids can walk to school. Parent involvement and contributions to the betterment to the whole of the student body has really improved the schools ambience, traffic flow, energy, positive attitude and genuine love of the school our children adore. Thank you to the principal and teachers for respecting individuality and curiosity from their students. Your respect for our children is noted, and greatly appreciated, especially your equality to all.
this is an awful School. I would not recomend this School to anyone. My daughter started this School in Kindergarten and we have had nothing but problems. every-day there's a complaint about my daughter. The reasoning is she talks out of place. She was also above average in prechool and is not below average. the principle does not care when I have concerns. She doesnt listen when i say certain people can not pick my child up. its only the second week of school and they're already complaining about my daughter. i am with drawing my daughter from this school. the principle and teachers work against you not with you.
I'm a parent trying to decide whether to send my child to school here this fall as a kindergartener. Can a parent or administrator address why they believe this school has a 7 rating when every other elementary school in Sherman Oaks has an 8? Thank you.
I have a 3rd Grader in this school and we couldn't be happier. My child loves his teacher, the principal is incredibly hands-on and the school seems more united than even when my child first started. Recently the school went Charter and it seems like there is more parents and teachers working together to do great things for the kids. Now we as parents have a chance to participate in curriculum planning and technology advancements. Just got an announcement that the school received a California Distinguished Award. The Principal of this school has really turned this school around - she is fantastic. Although she has her rules that she sticks by - sometimes parents can get uppity about them. But you can't make everyone happy all of the time. You do the best you can. And I get the feeling her priority is our kids!
For the 3-29-12 entry re: taunting the dog... Yes that is horrible! I am a dog owner and I would have been enraged as well - so much so that I would have said something to stop the behavior thereby pointing it out to the inattentive parents - you missed your opportunity. Now on to reviewing the school. This is a school that has become better every year under Principal Kessler. It has become a Charter school and much is being done to add and improve many programs for the school and the kids are benefitting from it. Test scores have increased steadily every year. As a result, Riverside was just named a CA Distinguished school. Wel are very happy with Riverside and our child is getting a good education.
In general a school is what you make of it and the parents and staff at Riverside are doing everything they can to make sure our kids are educated and have a positive experience. My daughter in in kindergarten here and we love the school. I have heard some complaints here and there but they were always from parents who don't spend a second becoming involved in the school. Ms Kessler is always on campus and all the students know and adore her, she is a force in the school and we are VERY lucky to have her. The teachers are very well educated and are very invested in the kids, their involvement in all aspects of the school is a testament to their dedication. We could not be happier!
Fabulous community feel. My kids love it and are thriving there! I feel extremely fortunate to have this school available, especially at times when the budget is being cut all around us. We all pitch in and are fortunate to be able to remain status quo with uninterrupted learning for our children. So pleased. You will see happy, secure, and very energetic children here. Like a slice of the past with a view of the future.
This is a very good school but there are definitely areas to improve-- kids cannot sit with their friends at lunch- they must sit by class; kids cannot play with their friends at recess and lunch, unless they are, by chance, in the same class. Parents really don't like this but the administration doesn't see the problem- they are more concerned with maintaining control at recess and lunch. The teachers are great and the staff are friendly.
My son attended the preschool class for special needs in the spring of 2010(he had a language delay). I am a stay at home mom, so i dropped my son off and picked him up. I say that to say that i saw more than maybe other families who sent their children by bus. The teacher did most of her instruction by screaming a "no-no-no" if a kid was doing something wrong. The other teacher would only make complaints about my child every time that I would pick him up, only once told me something positive about him. My son started arm flapping at this school b/c he was overstimulated with all the screaming. I asked the teacher about his arm flapping, and she bluntly told me he was autistic. Didn't take me to the side and kindly share her concerns, she just blurted it out in front of all the other kids/teachers/etc. Also, I was the one who had to ask about it, she didn't share her concerns before I mentioned it. We have had him tested since then, and not even a dr. has been that harsh/unkind about his condition. The environment was very caustic and actually harmful to my son. I wouldn't recommend this school for pre-k special needs kids. Other than that Miss anna seemed compassionate and kind.
Beware of this school! The Principal has failed as a leader. She has her own agenda and seems to be missing in action frequently. She also makes her own policies which creates a frantic, disorganized and uncomfortable learning environment. We will be pulling our Kindergartener for next year. The teachers seem to be good educators but are stifled by Ms. Kessler. Not a good rating for a fragile LAUSD.
