My 6th grader finished his 1st year at CAVA middle school. I was very skeptical at first, but the program is great! You get all of the materials & help you need; the teachers are so nice, caring & helpful, & if you are a responsible parent, your child will learn. You do need to be organized. This is not for every student. It's a rigorous program -your child has to be responsible, honest & committed. I had 2 sons in public middle school & I can say that the lessons (esp Eng/Science) are at minimum at par with the public middle school in our nice area- a school state ranked at 9/10, w/API of 889 & CA Distinguished School. Furthermore, I rate the majority of CAVA's lessons, especially in History, Art & Math as above average compared to the aforementioned public school. My 6th grader learned so much academically, including leadership & was honored w/membership in National Junior Honor Society. Needless to say, I have allowed re-registration into CAVA for the next school year. This rating is only for Middle School. I hear that they still have a ways to go with respect to the High School, which is a shame. Nonetheless, my son is happy right now (and me too!) & bored no more w/school.

What a fantastic experience! After trying several different Independent Study options, CAVA was by far the best. Excellent curriculum, caring and helpful teachers and great online platform. I only wish I found the program sooner. Mrs. Villalobos is the best.

Cava in the last year has changed. The sixth grade curriculum is awful and they do not give the learning coaches (parents) the answers for tests so if child gets it wrong you do not even know what the correct answer is. The teacher should have the answers! Science is a joke, no text book, and the unit tests are treacherous (especially when you don't have answers as a parent). It was great but no longer. The management and leadership has dwindled also.

CAVA @ Los Angeles is fantastic for 4th-8th grade. Younger kids would benefit from interaction & CAVA HS program has issues. That said, I wish I found it sooner. Son had 1st grade public & 2nd-6th in small private. I was worried his education suffered. I refused the idea of public middle school so gave CAVA a try. WOW! It was perfect. If focused on a subject, he stayed on it as long as he wanted. Here's where learning is different & knowledge is retained. He's strong in English so tested out of most of the work & concentrated on what he didn't. This keeps a child from getting bored, no needless repetition. Fly over what you know & more time for what needs to work on. The Scantron testing is great to see where help is needed & what the kid mastered allowing a more individualized program. I knew nothing about my son educationally until CAVA. No it's not for everyone & he DID NOT DO High School w/ CAVA because hated the mandatory online "group" classes. He went to HS for a year & at 15 to college. I think CAVA really gave him a chance to excel & me a chance to see he was learning. Now considering 4th grader with IEP. COMMON CORE next year in public? NO WAY

CAVA--San Joaquin. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS HIGH SCHOOL. This "school" does not inform parents upon enrollment that their child's courses will not get them into California state universities. We moved to CA from the east coast two months ago, enrolled our child in CAVA, and just discovered these requirements, on our own. We are now removing our child and enrolling in another school. And though our child has spent time earning all A's and A+'s at CAVA, our child now will start the year over so as to remove these useless classes from our child's transcript. If this school is representative of California's public schools, the system is a joke.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO CAVA OR ANY OTHER ONLINE SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD HAS GOALS TO ATTEND A UNIVERSITY STRAIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT A-G APPROVED. FOR CA STUDENTS, CHECK DOORWAYS WHICH LIST SCHOOLS AND THEIR COURSES THAT ARE QUALIFIED FOR UC AND CSU SCHOOLS. MY SON TOOK BIOLOGY AND WORLD HISTORY. THESE COURSE ARE WASC ACCREIDTED AND GOOD FOR HIM TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL BUT NOT FOR A UNIVERSITY. ITS WORSE WITH INSIGHTS, THAT SCHOOL ISNT ON THE LIST PERIOD. CAVA saved my life. My kids used to attend a school with a very high API (940's). The teachers and administrators would bully my kids over ridiculous policies (like a dress code for 6-year olds) even though they earned straight A's! After we switched to CAVA, we can sleep until 10:00, my kids have fun, gain interest in so many different areas. My older one's math is even better than when she was in regular school because we are one-on-one, and i get to explain any questions she may have. The curriculum is excellent, and my kids (ages 8 and 10) learn Science, History, Art and Foreign Language in addition to Math and English. Many schools with high API's are unable to offer such a variety of coursework due to their focus on Math and English.They also provide materials to do science experiments at home, while many brick and mortar schools do not have the capacity to allow kids such hands on activities. One school we attended took a field trip to COSTCO and charged $5 (really.) Our field trips are to museums, zoos, wilderness areas, and observatories. It takes a lot of work to complete each year, and we make up every day we miss and often work on "vacation" days to do so.

I am very happy with CAVA. Although the curriculum is very rigorous, it still allows my student to work at his own pace. We can pick and choose how long to spend on a particular subject. I have had great teacher support and learning coach trainings.This program allows the flexibility for my son to focus on sports. The one on one mentoring has been exactly what my son needed. Homeschooling is not easy, but the rewards outweigh the challenges.

I have been repeatedly disappointed by some of the administrators and teachers at this school. It is very difficult to get an administrator to respond to an issue. When they do respond, the attitude is that of apathy. Your child is just a number so they can obtain government funding to continue on. I dread having any contact with the administration because you get shoved off to someone who has absolutely no idea what they are doing and will not take the time to provide you with the resource you need for help or the answer to your question. In fact, it takes an act of GOD to get your home address changed - a seemingly simple task. Apparently, not so much. Can't even get that lady to respond to my emails. Very unprofessional. My son does have a couple of amazing teachers. However, his current AP US History teacher could not be worse. He is horribly negative. I'm appalled he is allowed to continue teaching. This high school is not doing well with California state standards and is below average three years in a row. If you want to avoid headaches and actually want a decent education where your child can be inspired, go elsewhere!

My son was enrolled in a public school. He got A's and B's and one of my friends recommended cava to me and said it was an excellent program. ITS NOT . I enrolled my son (in the 10th Grade) he didn't start off fine. Cava is very unorganized. It is very hard to contact the teachers, understand the concepts and so on. Also for PE there isn;t much for him to do. My son was in football before CAVA and now what is he going to do? Run around in circles in the backyard? I can't afford to send him into a ymca league or anything like that. Their PE system is horrible. My son would get headaches from looking at the computer screen all day. He didn't get the help he needed and the teachers are very unreachable. My son got C's and D's that year and I was very disappointed. And I have to blame CAVA I really do not recommend this school to anyone and I regret ever enrolling my son into it. CAVA doesn't teach very well, has a poor curriculum and not to mention their own textbooks are horrible, and the teachers are very unreachable. I rate this a 1 out of 10 for me. That one year at CAVA will affect my son's life forever. He may not get into a college because of those grades at CAVA.

We've been in CAVA for years now. We absolutely love it. There has a been a problem with my youngest not being able to read as fast as others at this age (grade 2), we are going to really accelerate over the summer with library materials and incentives. Everything else has been outstanding and we hope to continue in this environment for as long as possible.

I like the curriculum and the online model. Unfortunately, though, CAVA represents itself as a college preparatory high school even though the majority of its high school courses are not on the University of California's a-g list of accepted courses. That means that kids graduating from CAVA will not likely be accepted at any UC (or Cal State) College.

I LOVE CAVA!!! My son's school closed down at the end of last year, and I was going to be forced (due to availability) to send him to a school I didn't want to. A fellow Mom told me about K12 and the rest is history. The flexibility is fabulous, the curriculum is SO much better, and the mastery-based lessons are great. My son doesn't get bored, he can ask as many questions as occur to him, he loves his teachers, and I know how his day went. He gets P.E. credit for Ballet and Karate (he's not a sports fan) that he was taking anyway, and he can tailor his projects to his interests (and MY standards, not some dumbed-down PC revised version of education!) It's not for everyone, of course, but nothing is, and if you have an only child (like I do) you will probably want to find extra social events and activities to keep your child from getting lonely (I'm going to sign my son up for Cub Scouts.) But the rest more than makes up for a little research into local fun! And I LOVE that we can sleep in every day and save our bus money for fun...usually educational, too!...trips on our own. I'll probably send him back to traditional school for high school...unless he meets a CAVA girl first! =o)

We can not say enough great things about CAVA/K12. I wish i would have put my older 2 kids in it when they needed the one on one help, our 'home teacher' is awesome, if we have any questions, she's there. I've been able to see the damage that PUSD has done to my child and make positive adjustments. So sad that it has to come to this, and feel terrible for those who don't have the option of homeschooling due to work, but we are blessed to have such a wonderful community of parents/teachers who know and care about our children.

My only regret is that I didn't put my oldest son in K12 sooner. He had several miserable years at LAUSD with abusive and unfair teachers. We have had tons of support when we need it from the K12 teachers and staff. The free materials are of the highest quality and the content is vast. I like that I can vary our schedule. We can do just Science one day and just math the next. It is very flexible to adapt to individual student's needs and learning styles. I now have 4 students enrolled in K12.

What can be better than giving your child the one-on-one attention he or she needs? What can be better than discovering first hand their strengths and weaknesses as they learn? Schooling through CAVA can save a child suffering in traditional schools, where some children fall through the cracks. They support special needs with outside therapy and there are outside events and extra curricular activities offered regularly. The online and offline curriculum is fantastic. We have found our son has a passion for History and Science and our daughter, a confidence with Mathematics. Rather than being bullied at school on the playground, with monitors unwilling to take a moment to teach morals, your child can have lunch with friends like himself after a rec center nature class, because you finally have the freedom to design the day.

This ia an amazing program! We are so happy to be a part of this school. Our family actually had good experiences with traditional schooling socially but our son was always so far ahead of the available course offereings, he was growing bored with the process. Because CAVA is mastery based, he is able to work at an acelerated pace and is doing VERY well! Although we did not plan to homeschool, we are having such a great experience that we have decided to enroll our daughter when she starts kindergarten next year...BRAVO!

CAVA@Los Angeles is the best! Our child is only in kindergarten and within 3 months of starting the program she learned how to read independently. She was bored when attending a traditional school. She was not being challenged. Now with CAVA, she gets to choose what subjects to study in any given order. She is more confident and she attends all the field trips. We have a great teacher that we can contact whenever we need help. CAVA is a great choice for homeschooling!

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students' skills in English language arts and mathematics. The results for grade 10 students taking the test for the first time are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The CAHSEE is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of California. Students must pass all parts of the CAHSEE in order to graduate from high school. If they do not pass it the first time, students have multiple opportunities to retake the test. The goal is for all students to pass both sections of the test.
