INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Kohl School is the greatest thing I ever did for my kids. my children were picked on by administrators and teachers in the standard SUSD. Kohl was recommended to me and I have never looked back. It broke both my heart and my daughters when she graduated at the end of last year. The principle, teachers and staff are wonderful with the children. The nurture them into independent, confident, strong individuals.

It's interesting that this school is a 4 out of 10 and gets 5 stars on every one of the community rating categories, something that my niece and nephew's school that gets 9/10 doesn't even have. My kids went to this school and I will tell you what, 5 stars is about 4 too many. The principal says rude things to the kids and when it is brought up to anyone you are told "oh he's just quirky" or "that's just the way he relates to the kids". I will tell you first hand, this is NOT always true. If you do decide to enroll your child here, just make sure you take any complaints of what is said to them or how they are treated seriously. Take the time to check this place out. Do not take the word of one or two parents. Don't ask the people that sit at the booths, ask as many parents as you can. If you have a ton of time to volunteer (and/or money) you're student will probably do just fine. If you don't, I'd keep looking. My special needs child was so severely mistreated that I withdrew both of my kids. Teachers were hit and miss. Some teachers were great, others were less than great, even though I had heard really wonderful things about my son's K teacher, he was awful to my son.

I'm sorry maybe this is a 'fantabulous' school. But my question is ....Why are they setting up a booth at the Magnet Faire then when people approach it we are told. "We sorry but there is a 2yr waiting list for this school" by the Principal!!

Kohl is the best! Our principal and teachers put the children and their learning experiences first. Kohl makes learning fun with practical life experiences. My son has never been happier and more excited about school. Kohl is a community of wonderful educators and most of all a family!

Kohl is not just a school, we are a community. Starting with Bud, the teachers and finally the parents. We are all working together so that our children will have the best possible education and growing experience available. My son, like many other students at Kohl, cannot wait to leave for school in the morning. Kohl is a very special place where everyone knows your name.

I love Kohl because my children are receiving a well rounded education. They are also learning to be a caring and active citizen in their community. It is rare to find such a school today that is not focused on testing but on the education of children.

The teachers, the philosophy, the approach that minimizes the damage done by No Child Left Behind and the mindless emphasis of standardized testing.

Kohl Open is a great school because they are not just giving students a basic education but rather a well rounded education. Teachers and staff encourage the kids to think outside of the box, get the kids involved with community projects, give them a chance to experience performing arts, teach the students about their environment and show them how to preserve our resources.

Kohl lets kids be kids and gives them an education too! I knew I picked the right school when my daughter came home one day and said at Kohl everybody is your friend.

There are a thousand reasons why a love Kohl. Here are a few: Our school is dedicated to providing quality instruction through student centered learning. Students learn through real life experiences from going out into the community. Community service is an integrated part of learning at Kohl. Students have helped at St. Mary's Dining Hall which serves economically challenged families in Stockton. Children have developed a relationship with Walton School. This school is located directly next door to Kohl and serves developmentally disabled children. Children from Kohl participate in 'Circle of Friends' where they spend time, play, read, and interact with children from Walton. Kohl is dedicated to teaching children music and performing arts. This increases self confidence. All children at Kohl have music every day. They have a beautiful Strings, Jazz and Chorale program. Science is integrated into the curriculum. Children go on many field trips throughout the year, some of them to science centers, others to wild life areas where they study and learn about science. There are too many more wonderful things to say about Kohl to list.

The teachers and the learning environment are phenomenal. The kids learn the fundamentals, but also learn about the planet, recycling, community involvement, etc., not to mention all the field trips. I don't think there is a school that equals Kohl in all of Stockton.

Best educational environment I've ever been exposed to. The kids get more than just a standard education. They get life lessons and a sense of community. Self confidence, encouragement and success are all fostered. Kohl School is a genuine learning community.

Kohl is not just a school. It is more of a family. It's not just the subjects that are taught everyday, it's the other lessons, to give back to your community, caring for the enviorment, music and so many other lessons. I am proud to say my daughter goes to Kohl Open School!

Kohl has been a fabulous experience for our son - and us! The teachers are terrific, very caring and involved. They enjoy field trips monthly, do mentor projects where the older students work with the younger ones, and they understand the importance of the arts in education!

When looking for a school for my children, I wanted more than anything for them to continue the love of learning that they were born with. Kohl turned out to be just that place. My oldest is about to start her sophomore year at Stagg High School and she has been able to compete academically with students from other feeder schools while pursuing her interests in art, music and sports. I don't think she would have developed into such a well-rounded student if it weren't for Kohl. She continues to enjoy visiting Kohl and maintains a sense of ownership there. Her younger brother will be in 8th grade this year. He has benefitted from the strong sense of community at Kohl and will likely keep the friends that he has had since kindergarten for many more years to come. I wish more schools were like Kohl.

This year Kohl has implemented a new school song ' Everyone Knows Your Name' and let me tell you that is true. Kohl has such a small enrollment that it is just like family. The system that Kohl administrators use is awesome, it helps the children to be responsible for their own actions. All the classes K-6 do special activites 'together' thoughout the school year, the older students 'mentoring' the younger ones. Kohl is just a wonderful school, I am so pleased that we have the opportunity to be a part of the 'Kohl Family'.

Kohl Scholl offers a unique curriculum and educational experience to it students and their families. We particularly like the schools 'close knit' environment which strongly promotes the fundamentals of being a responsible, accountable & educated community member. Kohls small size allows all faculty, students and their families to become very familar with one another. There is a stronger sense of teamwork among the administration, faculty, students and their families than I have observed at any other school. Communication between the School and parents is outstanding. The principle, Bud is inexaustable in his efforts to preserve Kohls inique qualities and standards during a time when school budgets are constanlty being squeezed of what little resources they have to begin with.
