Overall I think the school provides a basic education for most of the students. I feel the teachers work very hard to meet the student’s needs. Most teachers are welcoming, friendly, and reach out to parents to work together to benefit their child's learning. There is an after school dance club taught by one of the teachers, which always provides quality shows for the parents and students.
The decreased number of office staff work hard to tend to the many parents in the office. They are friendly and attentive and try their best to be helpful.
In addition there are some services that provide assistance to both parents and children. There is a parent center staffed by a hard working, talented women. The center creates a welcoming environment where parents (mostly moms) drop in, take classes and work together to organize school events. There are Saturday classes for students who need extra assistance. There is also a terrific school psychologist.
The only negative that I see is the current principal who came in 2013. She does not work well with teachers, students or parents. She is rarely available to speak with parents about their concerns. She is more concerned with "policy" rather than meeting individual students needs. She is in her third year as the principal, and she has yet to come up with a school wide discipline and safety program.
The school is hiding information from parents, they passed out a flyer ttelling parents a school employee was removed from the school, but wont tel parents why or who it is. After a meeting in which LAUSD superintendents attended, nothing was resolved the school and LAUSD are hiding the information. Also the school is unsafe, any adult can come into the school without having to be indentified. this matter has been brought up to the principals attention but she refuses to do anything about it.
This is a great palce for parents especiallt becuase there are 2 wonderful parent center directors Julieta and Irma! They made sure that parents had classes and that we were well supported. There is also an very popular and wonderful Instructional specialist named Mrs SIlva. She has taught the parent workshops for 4 years and has made a differnce. I get up on Saturday morning just to attend her class. Sometimes they have other people teach the class and its not the same. Mrs. Silva has a calling for instruction and especially the way she teaches us. I hope she continues here for as long as my children attend Fernangeles!
