Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

It's really ashamed how the school has not been taken care of in the last 2 years, because they don't want to spend any money. The areas where our kids eat are filthy, the cafeteria is completely run down and old, and they haven't painted or power washed the outside area where our children play or the bathrooms since last year. It is a good thing that we have a great teacher for our son, otherwise he would be going elsewhere. It is unnecessary and not acceptable for a child's school to be run down, especially when us parents are always contributing funds in one way or another.

First experience with USA public school and wow... This school is really good. Perfect blend of Education, extra curricular and fun... Principal Eric is the best thing which happened to this school. Spends lot of efforts in making this happen and looks like this is the only school is district where student - iPad ratio is 1:1.

I have two students currently enrolled at this school, a 3rd grader and Kindergartner. In general, our experience with this school has been mostly positive. My 3rd grader has had some wonderful teachers, including the current teacher. With my 3rd grader, I have seen great academic growth and continue to do so. In general the Kindergarten team is a strong one, but some are stronger than others. Unfortunately, I am not convinced that my Kindergartner has one of the stronger, more enthusiastic teachers at the school. I think the principal is an effective leader and advocate of the student population, very personable and available. While he may be the head of the school, the teachers are the heart and soul of this school. Overall, this school is only as good as the teacher your student/s get/s.

My child has been lucky to have amazing teachers while at Ellis these last 3 years, but I just wish we had more control over choosing leadership and how the school is being run. Much has changed over the past 2 years and some def. not in the best interest of the kids. We have decided that our family will hang in there because my child only has 1.5 years left, but hopefully things improve going forward instead of decline further..

I can't say enough about how great it is to work at Ellis Elementary School in the Sunnyvale Elementary School District. Mr. Panosian, our principal as of last Fall, has all the qualities of a great principal. One of his priorities is the incorporation of technology at each grade level, and because of this, Ellis is meeting the needs of its students to get them ready for middle school. The staff is friendly and works well together and the office staff is always willing to help us with our requests. Our PTO is run by a wonderful group of parents and has fundraisers to provide our students with arts related activities including tickets to local theatre productions and several art lessons throughout the school year, among other things. Any parent would be lucky to have their child attend Ellis.

Hi Everyone, My first kid had a very nice time since kinder ,now she is in 5th grade.I have seen lot of improvement in her studies, activities, life skills, social skills, understanding the topics, individuality . The teachers are excellent ,supportive, helping, encouraging, understanding and more like a friend, in all stages. We have seen ups and downs in the school by changing of teachers and changing of principals. The Teachers are so good that they don't burden the kids , they give very less work that can be done with in 30 minutes to 1 hour. I am even getting registration done for my second kid. He will be going for kindergarten. The teacher respond to parents when they want help or any type of questions . Since K- 5 I have been getting very nice response and hospitality from staff people. The Students after leaving ELLIS they still remember their teachers and they contact them. They say that they are really proud to be one os the ELLIS ELEMENTARY students. I wish ELLIS SCHOOL to get more ratting and good API SCORE and a BRIGHT FUTURE . Thanks for seeing this review.Have a great time at ELLIS SCHOOL.

This school used to have a great reputation of being caring & compassionate until recently when the new Principal was hired. I have heard parents complain about situations that have occurred with their children that have gone un-resolved and swept under the rug because he doesn't care to handle the issues. I have also noticed while being around the school that he is also very rude & lacks the social skills required to be a principal, it's very frustrating!! It is very sad that after all of these years of hard work by Ms. Butler to become an accredited school, that he is taking this school down the tubes like he did at Bishop Elementary. I am currently evaluating other options for my children to attend another school. I refuse to have them attend a school that is being run someone who only cares about the paycheck, his relationship status with the male teachers and keeping his friendships closely intact with district employees. It's extremely sad & disappointing that the district allows this behavior to continue!!

I'm very happy with Ellis. My daughter has been there for 4th and 5th grade after having been at a private school since kindergarten. We like this public school much more than the private school she was in. It is a safe school. Kids are nurtured and encouraged to succeed, while being held accountable for their behavior. My daughter receives much more attention and the expectations (academically and socially) are a lot more realistic. This school produces well-rounded kids who are prepared for the life that awaits them after elementary school. If you're looking for a highly structured school that's all about grades and nothing else, you should go to Challenger. Ellis caters to the whole child, and that's what I want for my daughter.

As mentioned before in numerous e-mail responses Ellis is not the ideal school as advertised. There is poor communication in faculty staff and disrespect of teacher towards parents. Academics are weak and not structured to be most effective for child. The school rating is controlled by selective committe who are only willing to expose positive overview statistics to reflec the school being 5 star, which would need a more structured plan to reach that goa. Respectfully, Sunnyvale parent

Ellis Elementary school kids and parents have experienced a wide variety of isolated incidents that have grown in number and are becoming more severe. I urge all parents to encourage communication with your children because trust cannot be put on principal and teachers as parents did years ago. Average rate.

The principal is rude and unpleasant but the teachers are awesome! There are many parents & kids that want to improve the school's quality and services with new programs & activities. The solution, replace the principal and intimidation she instills in kinders as well as adults will turn positive!

My son is in 1st grade. His teacher is very active with the children. The PTO is very active too and works to supplement what the district and state don't provide to the school or teachers. In the last year, they've placed new ELMOs in rooms, spend money on really neat school assemblies, and are active in creating a family culture with in the school.

I was raised in S'vale & attended Cumberland Elementary, S'va Jr. High and then Homestead High. My daughter is a kindergartner at Ellis and I am astonished and grateful as to the parent-teacher involvement. The communication between all of the school staff, parents and students is very evident and the endless efforts to continue a higher education along with providing arts & music really makes a lasting impression in the students. The diversity is embrassed by all and my experience thus far has been great. I anticipate nothing less from Ellis School in the coming years. Julia

My son just started Kindergarten, but the parent & teacher involvement at the school appears to be quite good, with a strong turnout for PTO meetings and school fundraising events. There is music available through trained volunteers through the Music for Minors program, but no specific arts instruction as part of the curriculum, and that is unfortunate.

This is a great school with teachers and parents who care about the children's ability to learn great things. However, I don't believe they offer the ability for children to be creative in their learning. They are still teaching the state exams which only give teachers minimal time to teach children what they can would like, by the time children reach college they would have to be re-engineered 'how to think'. This is an improvement I would like to see for all public schools. I hope that Ellis can set the trend for this radical change.
