Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am a parent of a Freshman at Merrill West High School in Tracy. I have nothing but nice things to say! Having only lived in Tracy for 5 years I of course asked around to other parents regarding the High Schools. I couldn't believe what a tainted view I received of West. Perhaps this school had some pretty rough years before, but it looks to me that the trouble has moved on. After touring the school and meeting the staff and teachers I had no reservations of putting my son in this school. It was a great decision. He is having such a great time here. He has 3.8 gpa and is enjoying the wonderful Drama department with Mrs. Welk. He has made so many friends. There are no gang members walking the halls. It is a wonderfully diverse group of kids and that is the best education we can give our children. How to be kind to one another and not judgmental. Principal Brown is doing a wonderful job. My daughter will be starting there in 2 years and I have no problems sending her there. I wish other people would give this school a second look, and especially stop giving it such a bad review.

I am a freshman and I just moved here this summer from San Jose, it was really hard for me to leave my best friends. I knew I had to start over making new friends and the teachers made it very easy for me. The teachers made us talk to each other to get to know each other, this worked very well with my algebra 2 class and geography class. The teachers gives me a solid education foundation for me and feel like that I will do well after freshman year but the textbooks there are quite worn out also the technology is utterly bygone the technology we have today. I chose to write a review a for this school because I believe with the extra money will help the school out a lot and believe it deserves it. Thank you for reading my review!

I graduated from west high school last year & I can honestly say I will not miss it. I just feel like the school lacks school spirit & there are so many dumb rules, especially this year. Good luck to the rest of you who are still stuck there!

I am a Junior at WHS. The administration does not care about the average student, unless their parent calls in or comes down to the school themselves. WHS seems to be more concerned with making this school more like a jail than a learning institution. The only thing good about this school is the AP and Honors teachers, they are actually good teachers. The rest barely care. Maybe that is for a good reason, too many ghetto Bay Area misfits have come here thinking that they are some sort of gangsters so there is no choice but to treat them like the animals they are. I can not wait to get out of here and I am blessed to be in a position of possible early graduation.

As a current senior at this school, I will definitely miss my years at West High. This school offers many extra curricular activities. After 14 years, West High has received the stadium and pool its always needed, and it is by far way better than the stadium at our rival Tracy High School. The teachers at this school are extremely helpful and unique in their own way. West will continue to be an outstanding high school in the years to come. GO WOLFPACK!!

West has been a very good school for my daughter. I have nothing negative to say except that I wish at the beginning of her fresman year (and I know they now do this) they had encouraged 'college' thinking in their students. Like I said, I think they're now doing that so we'll see in 5 years when my next child goes to West. Overall, very good experience with the school!

West isn't a bad school is you involved in upper level classes like AP or honors classes or the acadmy. In the more difficult classes the teachers tend to be more respectful and willing to help out after school and sometimes even on weekends if you need it.However in some of the lower classes the teachers don't seem to care as much and definately do not respect the students the same way AP teachers do. The school is also very crowded, but it is generally very safe acccept for a few occasional fights that all high schools have. The school is also finally getting its football stadium and pool that it was supposed to have a long time ago.

The Space and Engineering Academy is a great way for kids to learn because classes are smaller and it is more personlized for student who want to learn about science. It scored about 806 on the API scores

I graduated from this school in 2005. It was a great school, teachers were always willing to help students if they needed extra help. Mr. Haim, a history teacher, actually spent his weekends helping students study for the AP exams. The school might be over populated but thats mainly because of people from the bay area flocking to Tracy because its cheap. A lot of parents are commuters therefore I feel as if there isnt as much parent involvement as there should be.

I got the best education possible at West High. They offer a wide range of AP classes with amazing teachers and a ton of extra-curricular activities. I walked into college with 30 credits (Sophomore standing) and a full-tuition scholarship thanks to the opportunities I had at West. I go to a private school on the East Coast now, and I was fully prepared for the workload and professor expectations of college.

I have been a parent of West High for eight years and have watched the academic programs florish. West has acheived the 'Distinguished School Award' as well as Goldedn Bell Award for their Space and Engineering department. The Library offers an on-line library, internet connections, computer stations and labs, photo copiers, scanners, laser printers and video production facility. The classes are even more impressive. They even have a student store on campus, it's just like a 7-11. West also has over a dozen clubs ranging from academic to cultural. The teachers that I have met over the years have been top notch for my kids. After eight years as a parent of multple students at west high, I have learned one very valuable lesson, take advantage of the many programs , clubs and oportunities and you will go far. Ignore them and it won't matter where you go to school. Another happy Parent

I have low opinions about this schools stand on safety and discipline, however, I do feel the teachers are overall pretty good. I do not feel that this school stacks up to taking a strong stand on student violence. I have witnessed a couple of brawls started because of the kids 'group affiliation'(not exactly gang affiliation, but enough to cause these youngsters to act stupid). There have been very good teachers that have taught my daughter. Two were very interactive by sending me regular e-mails about her grades and classroom performance. Another teacher makes constant attempts with getting the kids up to speed with their math and offers the kids after school tutoring on his own time.

I believe that the quality of the programs are good, however they are over shadowed by the sheer number of students that are attending the school today. For a public high school and budget constraints, I believe that they are trying their best to provide music, a variety of sports, art and outside activities for the kids. I feel that a parent can be involved at any level either by giving their time, money or attending to the different site committees. Having looked at the rating below, I would have to say that it may not be one of the safest schools in respect to kids fighting. However, if your child has good academic skills and gets along socially then I do not forsee any problems. Though I have never enjoyed the administration, I do think that my child has had some very good teachers.

Consider carefully before enrolling your student in any Tracy Unified District School, including West High. Do your homework, this district is terrible at educating. A student's 'right to be treated with respect' as mandated in the Student Handbook is violated daily by the very adults they are to respect. They are not being prepared for life as responsible adults. They aren't even trusted off campus for lunch. On the upside: there is no stadium, no pool, no lockers all promised long ago when the campus was built. Two of my children were subjected to this school. My third will not be. Do a web search for school rankings. It's an eye-opener.

I went to this school and graduated in 99'. It really is a great school for academics and for sports. The only thing every person I've talked to thought needed alot of improvement was the Principal. He did alot of things that should have got him fired but he never was. I hope they get rid of him soon so others dont have to deal with his fakeness and poor leadership.
