My son started kindergarten at Chandler this fall. Coming from a very small, close-knit preschool, I was nervous about the whole public school thing. I feel very lucky to be in Chandler's district because it was a seamless transition for all of us. My son absolutely ADORES his teacher, loves doing his homework (seriously), and comes home telling me what he has learned. In only a month, I have noticed extreme changes in the way he learns and what he finds interesting. I am very impressed with the way the school is run, and how passionate the parents are. Like ANY school, there are kinks that need to be worked out, but I see big things in the future for Chandler. They just opened a science lab, they have music and art, and the after-school options are great. I am happy we began our elementary journey here, and I look forward to seeing it grow.
My school is a wonderful little community school. The teachers are great and really care about the school and the children that go there. There are a lot of parents who are investing in making the school even greater, and that is HUGE. We live close enough to walk and my son loves that. There are trees and grass and that is rare for a public school, most are concrete jungles. My son is loving it, he's excited to go to school everyday and that is wonderful to see.
Test scores are going down at this school and have been for a while. Poor parent involvement. Some teachers seem to really care about the kids, but you have just as many that seem checked out. The special education at this school is REALLY lacking. If you can go to Dixie, Sherman Oaks, Kester or Hesby Oaks you should.
We are so lucky to attend Chandler. My son is thriving and learning. The staff is very supportive and the teachers are amazing. My son has never been bullied and he has a lot of good friends. The one incident we heard of was taken care of right away by his teacher and the administration. It is a great school.
Chandler elementary is an awesome school. It pains me to see that one parent above stated negative comments about our principal. I have worked as a teacher at Chandler for over 20 years and I still love our school. The teachers are outstanding and the students are exceptional human beings. Our principal has done a tremendous job of providing technological resources for students and staff members to reach our full potential. This is clealy evident in the fact that we became a California Distinguished School. I am very proud to be a staff member at Chandler Elementary School.
Both of my children have graduated from Chandler. I must say this elementary school has prepared them for middle school beyond my expectations. As for the review below, you can not please everyone and everyone can not have a wonderful experience. I am sad to read the review that the child was bullied and the parents were not happy. But it happens at every school. As for the Principal McIntyre, she is great. Bottom line. You will not find a more dedicated and attentive principal in the area. She gets the job done with flying colors. Chandler, thank for the great education. This was a great school for my kids.
My son started kinder here last week. We don't have much to say yet but I find the negative review posted yesterday surprising. So far everyone at this school seems to care and be very concerned with kids treating each other well. I'll write more when I know more. But so far the school has a nice vibe, a caring vibe, and the principal seems super attentive. I think all schools will have a few unhappy customers, so I'm not trying to erase the pain of the parent who wasn't happy. My friends' child was bullied twice at Dixie Cyn and felt un-attended to as well. We need to step up our game as parents to make sure our kids don't bully or tolerate it! I will re-rate the school when I've been here longer. Rating after a 2nd wk isn't really fair to any future parent trying to figure out where to go.
Principal, Kristine McIntyre, has no leadership abilities and lacks a total sense of responsibility. My daughter was in session for 6 months and had 4 different teachers. In that time, the class size was 30-35 students per classroom to one teacher. She was bullied twice: once when hit in the face with a lunch pail and the second, when a child kicked her in the stomach while she was on the apparatus. She had to find an adult to mediate the situation herself, Principal McIntyre, who neither called or sent a note home to inform us. It was not until our daughter complained of her rib hurting that we knew. I called principal McIntyre to seek to understand the situation, who took zero accountability for any of the events. Her only apology was, "I'm sorry you feel that way". Coincidently we received a letter home that week that stated our daughter was reading and writing below expectations. She is now in a private school where she has received 2 student of the month awards & 2 report cards above average. My 7 year old cringes when we now drive past Chandler Elementary. If you want an enriching, safe and tolerant environment, I would not recommend Chandler Elementary to you.
My daughter attended Kester for her first 2 years but then moved to Chandler for 2nd grade last year. Kester was hit and miss. Her kinder teacher was amazing but her 1st grade experience was not good. Chandler has been a very nice change. Most of all, I love that there are only about 500 students on the whole campus. We were so used to Kester which is bursting at the seams with kids, that on the first day of school, I wondered "where IS everybody?". The teachers are kind and interested in the kids, the principle is wonderful, and the PTA is very active and doing so much for the school! It has the feeling of a small neighborhood school with friendly staff and great free after school care. Did I say FREE. Yes, I did. If you are looking for a school that is inviting, small, where you are able to have easy access to the principle and like cultural diversity, consider Chandler. You won't be disappointed. This year they are going to be an affiliated charted school as well. I'm excited to see what flexibility and changes that will bring.
My son is beginning his 3rd year at Chandler. We are thrilled to be a part of this school community! His teachers have been excellent. The principal is outstanding; she genuinely cares about her teachers AND each student. The PTA is very active and has been helping improve the school in measurable ways every year for several years now. We are particularly happy with the size of the school, the diversity of the student body and INclusivity of the PTA!
My son just graduated from Chandler from kindergarten to 5th grade. I can name all the great teachers. Ms. Barragan, Ms. Rubestein (sad she had to go) Ms. Combs, Mr. Gilmore and Ms. Cabrera all of them very caring and worried for the progress of every child. With not a question I recommend this school. My son LOVE it. Not to mention, the great principal :). Ms. Ajian should not be there tho.
My children have been at Chandler their entire elementary careers and my daughter will be matriculating to middle school in June. We have had opportunities to change schools, but have stayed at Chandler because of it's size, the diversity of the student population, the quality of the teachers, the curriculum, and the administration, in addition to just feeling at home here. We could not be happier. I have been involved in many of the parent committees and have been thrilled with all of the parents who make the effort and take the time to do what they can to improve the school. It gets better every year, we even have a full time music teacher now, paid for by the PTA. It gives one hope to see people pulling together for the good of the school as a whole, and having become a CA Distinguished School this year, obviously it's working.
My daughter started here last year after attending a Montessori Preschool. She already knew alot before going into kinder but we were fortunate enough to get an amazing teacher! She gives her enrichment work and my daughter is doing well. This is the school I love having my child in!
Bottom line, you'd be fortunate to get in here. The school is fabulous. The scores are outstanding. They are Title One, which means they have a lot more money coming in for the extras to enrich the students. Things like an orchestra and science. They have plenty of help in the classrooms, and while a lot of kids don't come from English speaking homes, they all speak English themselves. There's a small, non-political core of active parents who run the PTA. They are free of snark and judgement, and the fundraising is very low-key. They are up for the much-coveted Distinguished Schools designation this year. So don't be off-put by the 7 on the Great Schools score -- I think that's about 3 points too low. You'll love it here!
Excellent teachers and staff. API has grown to 863 which is right up there with Sherman Oaks and Dixie!! Chandler is a small school that has a newer (amazing, involved principal), and provides a very loving, learning environment for our kids. We are so blessed to have Chandler
I have been a volunteer reading partner at Chandler for over four years, helping lwith children typically on a one to one basis, but also helping out in the classrooms . I have also participated in special school activities. This is a terrific school! The teachers really do give their all. I've been around long enough to see exremely hard-working , dedicated staff and active PTA, along with enthusiastic , appreciative community participation. It's an honor to be incuded here.
As a former Chandler student back in the 60's -70's I enjoy reading about my school. I did read some reviews and one mentioned how the teacher was "so far so good" but " a bit strict". I have to say that times have changed when teachers are a suppose to be "nice and friendly" and not to anger a child or consequence them. What a soft bunch of parents and kids we seem to have these days. Teachers have to defend themselves vs when the teacher called home the parent respected the call and addressed the problem at home. Too bad for the kids. Not everyone should get the ribbon for just trying. I'm speaking from experience as I became a teacher. I teach PE and more kids have little or no skills related to movement, coordination or basic understanding of games. Fault of the schools or teachers? Partly as many teachers are hamstrung by test scores and analytical thinking is lost. I'm happy that Chandler is still a fine school and is educating a diverse population. I know that there are great parents and teachers in all schools. Without parent support, regardless of the teachers, children do not learn.
Chandler is a gem! The school's API is right on par with Riverside & Dixie Canyon. We have a great PTA & Booster Club with active parents. Our principal, Ms. McIntire, was the AP at Lanai Road and she's worked very hard to get Chandler up to grade with some of the other schools in the area. Our teachers are extremely skilled, efficient and caring. The school is VERY clean, well maintained and has a SMALL teacher/child ratio. The PTA are active in implementing additional art, music, dance & physical Ed - while other school are getting cutbacks. We spent a fortune sending our daughter to different private schools, all the while Chandler was right under our nose! I highly recommend looking at Chandler before you give up on LAUSD.
Chandler is really a wonderful, charming, diverse, gem of a school. We love it! Not only is it beautiful aesthetically, with its mature trees and clean grounds, it has a great Principal, teachers and administrative staff. Committed parent volunteers and PTA members have really stepped up to involve themselves and contribute to the school's success. The education is first rate and our child has flourished beautifully.
My son attends chandler and so far so good...I like his teacher. She is nice but yet stricked. I also like the fact that this school doesnt have that manny student and therfore the teaches can focus on our childres education rather that the size of the class..
