My child is in this school and the students who are English Learners they still, need more help in writing skills also in math all public schools need more after school programs or before school I wish the teachers, will volunteer and gave classes to kids.

This school had a API score jump after a test taking methods/teaching to the test guru consulted with the school/teachers. A sure way to get scores up but does taking the SAT prep course really make anyone smarter - or just better at taking tests. There are some effective teachers but dismal quality afterschool programs which make it a hard choice for some parents in the area.

Great school, nice teachers, It has a gifted and Talanted education program, which offers a more challenging and faced paced curriculum for identified 3rd 4th and 5th grade students. it Also has a free preschool program which is great, overall I'm very happy with this school.

My child is in the 2005-2006 kindergarten class at Erwin Street. She is learning to read and write far beyond the level that was expected for her age in the 1970's. Her teacher, Ms. Perros Barrett, is excellent in every way (lesson plans, presentation, involvement and communication). The new principal, Maria Awakian, encourages the staff and students to have school pride and to participate in celebrating various cultures. My only two regrets are that the schoolyard is all blacktop (no grass to play in) and that the PTA meetings are all scheduled during the daytime which excludes the working moms and dads. There could be more parential involvement if the PTA would meet in the evenings occasionally.

I am very unhappy, that the school has no extracurricular activities or offer programs after school to help those students with help in reading, math, or homework clinic. I have brought this issue to the principal and other teachers and no one seems to care. I did my research and concluded, that a high percentage of students are either failling Math and Reading and the school would benefit of such programs.

Kudos to the administration, teachers, parents, and students for raising the API scores to 4! The new principal, Maria Awakian is approachable, fair and well liked by the staff. I see further improvements in test scores and student learning, as well as a much needed repair in staff morale rise. Erwin Street School will return to a united front with 'students first' in mind. The rating indicated below is for the school year 2004-2005.

I feel that this school needs alot of work. I don't feel that the teachers are putting forth enough effort with our children. It's very unfortunate that this is the only public elementary school in my district, when it is so poorly ran.

This is a very rough school. My daughter's introduction to the playground was being dragged across it by three boys with her blouse pulled over her head. The principle ignores most non hispanic parents and doesn't return calls. There have been problems with students getting hit by cars because there are no crossing guards and heavy traffic. Buses are forced to load and off load children by double parking. Vandalism is also an issue.

My daughter goes to Erwin Street and I am amazed how much she has learned!! Her teachers are excellent and very caring and protective of the kids. If I ever move i will make sure i move into Erwins district. And i forgot to mention the office staff who are very caring and wonderful people.
