Great teachers. Great parent involvement. Makes for a wonderful community that we are happy to be a part of.
We are having a very good experience at Kester. Enrolled in the Magnet program and our children are flourishing with all of the "extras" that used to be part of just the regular program before budget cuts. The home school does its best to ensure students access many enriching activities and the school is a consistent high performer academically.
I moved to Sherman Oaks just for my kids to go the Kester and I have never regretted that decision. I am going into year number 8 as Kester family and every year we get new teachers. Every teacher has helped my kids with learning and growing up. the teachers spend more waking hours with my son that I do 5 days of the week and am grateful to them for helping me raise my son.
this is my sons 4th year at Kester. we both love it here. staff is awsome, friendly and always helps out a family in need during the holiday. this school cares about our kids futures . they give tons of homework and plenty of places for a parent to volunteer.they so so much for the kids so they they can to achive great success. thank you Kester! mom of a magnet 3th grader =)
This is my 5th year as a Kester Parent. I have gotten to know many teachers, parents, and students at both the Magnet and the Home School. I can honestly say that for a school this LARGE, you couldn't get a nicer small community feel. That is, if you involve yourself in your child's education, volunteer and help as much as you can, and make it a point to be PRESENT. It's very easy to complain, but in my experience, the one's that always do are RARELY willing to step up to the plate and bring forth a solution. So, that said, yes, there will be bad experiences. Some kids will be mean, some Cafeteria food will be bland, some Staff will be inadequate, and when it happens to your kid, it hurts. But that is going to happen AT EVERY SCHOOL! Bottom line, Kester is wonderful school. When you have teachers that CARE about their students' progress, parents that are PROPERLY RAISING their children, and students that TRY and DO their very best, you will always be happy with the results. Those who have all 3 factors going strong, will be the ones that give their school 5 stars. The others, will only complain about it. Kester School and Staff, you have my support and recommendation.
Kester is a fantastic school. The teachers and administrators are top notch! The parent organization works very hard to continue to improve on and expand opportunities and experiences for the children each and every year. Our son loves the school. We are proud members and supporters of Kester. Keep up the great work!!
Wonderful parent community, teachers and principal! Lovely campus. My son graduated from Kester and my daughter currently attends the school. We feel incredible fortunate that Kester is our neighborhood school!
Our school is very involved with the community. The parents provide school supplies for each class room. We do fun raisers . Many parents do volunteering in and for the school. Our PTA leader does everything on her own time. Kids get together one day at the beach for the summer vacation those that can make it.
What a joke. I don't know which group is worse, the unresponsive and negligent administration, the negligent staff, or the negligent parents. Our 2 kids are super bright since we're heavily involved with our children and engage with them constantly. We only take them to Kester because it's the lesser of 2 evils and because it's the law if they're not home-schooled. It's just a shame they aren't developing friendships that will last a lifetime since they're more compatible with their friends in other neighborhoods.
So far, I have had horrible experiences with the school administrative staff, and my child hasn't even enrolled there yet. They're extremely unresponsive and gave me the run around for 2 months regarding an inquiry I had concerning an assessment I requested. I really hope this changes by the time the 2013-2014 school year starts.
Our kids loved Kester. I agree with others that the school has some of the best teachers in the area. I would recommend networking with parents of older students to see who is the best for each year of study, then submit a request for that teacher. To give you some background, four years ago, the principal was replaced and everything took a turn for the worse. Some of it was due to reduced funding affecting all schools - but some of it was also due to mismanagement, like bad choices regarding which instructors to let go. Not only were the two librarians laid off, but all the money collected from the book fairs was transferred from PTA to KAMPA, and then used for other purposes instead of providing new books. We visited the school last month for their annual Music & Arts festival, and bumped into many of the fine teachers who are still there. From what I understand, they have hired yet another principal and are trying to get it back into position as one of the top elementary schools in the valley.
4th year in a row we've been lucky to have amazing teachers year after year.I embrace the amount of homework the kids get (sorry I do not like the projects).I would agree with some parents regarding cleanliness of the schoo. But did they bring up their concerns or just posted on the website? When I saw a problem I informed the principle, and it was addressed. Furthermore, I've been checking for sustainability and there is no more issue. I can't volunteer my time but I donate to the PTA and items needed for the classroom. The challenge with lack of parental involvement is diversity of incomes, backgrounds, and education unlike in other schools that do not "share" zipcodes. If you can't help, donate time or $$ and don't complain. It's a great school and the teachers care.As parents we owe to our kids to work with the educators to further and enforce learning when at home. So don't blame the school or the teacher for your daughter or son not knowing the capital. Each one of us should be reaching out to see how we can support and help giving the state of the budget and funding for our children. Critizing is easy - doing something about it is not!
Our experience with Kester has been stellar. Our kids have had fantastic teachers who love their positions and are so dedicated to sharing knowledge in fun and interesting ways. We have been fortunate to experience both the home school and Magnet program and see the children thrive in each. The new Principal is energetic and innovative and the school seems to be prospering from her enthusiasm. PTA and KAMPA do a great job, and could benefit from more volunteers. I think you d be hard-pressed to find a better LAUSD elementary school in our area.
I work at this school and I know how disorganized and how it has hygiene issues. The faculty doesn't take their work seriously, we teachers only pay close attention to the kids whose mothers we know. I know, its pretty sad how the kids are not provided enough attention and if I were you, I would stay away from this school. I'm also moving to a different school soon and stay away from all the bad influence.
I think Kester Ave is a very good school. There are lots of opportunities to get involved with the community, but we still need more parents to step up.
The school continues to meet my child's needs as a 4th grader. She loves her teacher because the teacher is caring. She can't wait to do PE on Thursday. She and her class enjoy the read aloud three times a week from a wonderful volunteer. She always looking forward to orchestra. What more can a mom ask for in a school?
This school has been like a second home to me since Kindergartin. They have wonderful teachers who help you work at your fullest extent. i just graduated from this school and am very thankful that my first 6 years of education happened at Kester.
I just culminated this wonderful school from the Magnet program. This school has taught me so much I have been going to this school since preschool and I love it. These teachers go over and beyond for their students. I am so happy with the whole school I will never forget it.
I recently attended the school's fair/fundraiser and I was so impressed with the organization, the turn out and the diversity for the families. The school looked clean, the kids and families were having fun and I later heard from a neighbor that they raised over 15K that day for school improvement projects. To me, that says the PTA is doing an amazing job.
It would be great to have teacher names so we know what to steer away from...
