I love this school because of the excellent and hardworking teachers that motivate my kids to do their best work, read critically, and reason with logic and and an open mind. Also the RBVHS's drama and art departments are ambitious and visionary in nurturing their students' talents.

Rancho Buena Vista High School is an absolutely wonderful school. The teachers here care so much about each and every stduent. They go above and beyond the "typical" call of duty to ensure that each student on campus gets the support that he or she needs. From the moment you step on this campus, you will see and feel the enthusiasm of not just the staff, but of the students. We are a family here.

I see teachers, parents, administrators, and support staff every day come to RBV with an attitude of wanting to do their best and expecting the best outcome and school in the area. The spirit of giving time and effort over the top is the usual at this school.

If your child is gifted and in the AP or IB track this may be a great school but less than 1% of the kids complete the IB program. the school is one of the best in North County by the state scores but is seriously lacking in many areas. the School district was to build two new High schools in the past ten years to relive overcrowding but only built one campus and called it two. Like all public schools in CA the teachers are either great (10%) or retired in class right after getting tenure (90%). The administration is afraid of the teachers, their union, and their full time lawyers. Thus any disagreements with kooky classroom or grading practices are just ignored (after all it is a public school). Cont.

I am a current senior who has taken the hardest classes at RBVHS. [full ib] Basically here's the rock hard truth: if you take the honors route then the teachers will never ever ever give up on you, they're almost always there to help you even if you dont understand things at first, and i think this hs has the best learning environment one could hope for. also to whoever said there was no orchestra, this is true but there is an excellent marching band and wind ensemble (woot!) which i am proud to be a member of. recommend this school to whoever wants to learn. if the student has zero motivation to learn or to act then nothing not even the best teachers can help them. unfortunately this does happen within this large public school, there are people who just kinda give up and this is where the negative comments come from.

Rancho offers a rewarding International Baccalaureate (IB) Program that allows students to expand their minds, grow as people, and create organizations that will have a lasting impact on their community. Rancho also provides an exceptional AP/Honors Program, along with a prodigious Athletic Program that will ultimately lead your child to success.

I'm a freshmen at RBV, and I have to say I love i there! It's a really good school, and I don't think it's bad at all. Since the beganing of the school year I haven't seen any one being bullied or any fights going on... The only thing I don't like is that there's making out and drugs, but all school's have that... But RBV's a great school, I love it there. =]

I am very disappointed and frustrated with most the staff and especially counseling at RBVH! I do not recommend this school. Students who live in this area are better off going to a private school or moving to different district.

My son is in his second year at RBV. I find the teaching staff and counselors very formal and defensive. Rather than the honors courses being enriching and inspiring, it is more like a work load that is unsurmountable. The tutoring sessions offered are not available to student athletes, and they are so crowded that it is imposible to get quality help. I am extremely disappointed and discouraged with RBV.

Rancho is grossly overcrowded. 3500 kids in a school built for 1800. Two tier academic system, AP, Honors and IP.which the school stresses and the regular classes which are for English Learners and the less gifted or motivated. No vocational training. One counselor for approximately 500 kids.Physical plant old and worn. Bathrooms not well kept.Serious traffic problems. Dress code ignored. Many classes overcrowded.

My child was an AP/IB student at Rancho and received full academic scholarship to a UC & graduated with 2 B.S. degrees, Magna Cum Laude; was pursued by Yale, Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech to continue education with Ph.D. in chemistry, again on full fellowship. The teachers in the science department and all the AP/IB teachers were excellent and encouraging. The school, like all California schools, is overcrowded, parents were not encouraged to participate, and the counselors & principal were noncommunicative & not helpful. However, the school was safe, and the teachers are of excellent calibre & very student involved.

RBV is beyond a doubt the best- a variety of classes, great teachers, enrichment programs and enthusiastic students. Sure the school is overcrowded, but you work with what you have, and it has far fewer problems with drugs and gangs than its counterpart. It also has an 8 of 10 in school ratings which is high for California.

Where to begin, The school was too overcrowded, it had twice as many kids as the school was built and designed for. The counselors were never available we were only able to contact her assistant. There is no follow up available for parents, i.e., mygradebook or Aeires. The parent involvement is minimal at best. My son went to RBV his freshman year and security on campus was minimal. We would not recommend anyone to go there.

Rancho is a great school! In spite of its large size, Rancho involves all of its students in a myriad of academic programs at all levels, extracurricular activities and sports. No doubt a lower enrollment would benefit all, teachers, staff and students, but as large it is now, Rancho has excelled in many areas. Most important, students feel that their teachers care, and that is quite an achievement for such a huge school. The IB/AP Program is outstanding. Students participating in it are guided by excellent teachers throughout. Congratulations to Rancho for being the Academic Decathlon winner for 2006!

Drastically overcrowded, large classes, long lines, overburdened counselors, limited space and resources. Teachers are generally good--many excellent--but morale has suffered, due to overcrowding, shortage of supplies and resources, and pay and district administration issues. The new superintendent may help. Social science and math departments are strong. Science is good. English and languages (Spanish, German, French) are underemphasized and it shows. Library is ridiculously underfunded. Arts range from mediocre to okay (except no orchestra) to good/excellent art and drama (both offer higher level IB courses). Physical and Health Education are inadequate. Vocational education (ROP) is separately funded, generally good, and, in some cases, excellent(graphic design, stage design). Athletics is average for area. Little attempt to involve parents in academics; more for extracurriculars, mainly fund-raising and transportation. RBV is an International Baccalaureate World School. 25-30 seniors attempt full diploma; most are successful. 2006 state champion academic team.

RBV has one of the best academic programs in North County with the IP/AP/honors program. It has great theater and music departments, as well as great sports teams. I went to three different high schools, and this was the one with the most school spirit and the least cliques.

I think Rancho is a great school. My son is in the IB program and I couldn't be happier with the courses available. I think there is excellent communication with parents. My only criticism is there are far too many students per counselor, but that is because of lack of state funding, not RBV's fault. I highly recommend RBV.

We have two daughters that attend school there. I an impressed with the level of communication that we have with the teachers and the school in general. After school and lunchtime tutoring in every subject is available daily. They encourage parent involvement from day one. One of my daughters plays the guitar so she has taken some of the music classes and really likes them alot. There are a multitude of clubs and activities for the students to participate in throughout the year.

Counselors have huge student lists. Rarely seeing each student unless a problem arises. And then, it's a problem too late. Vocational counseling is excellent but college candidates need encouragement too. Good students need counseling. Not all students have older siblings sharing the college experience. Students in the college curriculumn should have activities where previous H.S. students come in to talk about the enjoyment of college life. Many kids are still hesitant to venture beyond their home. They miss the importance of living away from home, beyond the psychological umbilical cord still attached to their parents. They need to confident to explore new subjects and take part in college campus activities. RBV leaves encouragement to the family and doesn't emphasize choosing college in any substantive way. My daughter is an honor student, but unfortunately has chosen to stay local and go to a community college.

I am a former student of Rancho Buena Vista, most of the teachers dont really care, and the students care even less. Not the best learning envorinment, yet, far better than some. If the students are really willing to learn, then they have most of the opportunities that they need, in most cases. Unfortunatly, most of Ranchos students just dont care. And some of the teachers are starting to give up.
