Eagle Peak is a great fit for my child. Like many children, he excels in some areas while needs assistance in others, and the environment at EPMS meets his needs. The classes are larger, but have two teachers, so the teacher-student ratio is fine, and the students are more independent than in a traditional public school, so they don't require the same level of attention. The classroom is a small community in which the children are taught to collaborate, and older children are encouraged to teach/mentor younger children. Because the school is small overall, my child receives attention that he would likely not receive at another school. The staff and faculty know the children personally. Eagle Peak reinforces the values that I teach at home: care of self, others, community, and environment, self-confidence, independence, in addition to excellence in education.
Eagle Peak is a great alternative to standard public schools and classroom structure. Children must learn self sufficiency, self motivation, and community building behavior all of which are challenges at times for each student. Parent participation is a huge reason for success. The classes remain very large (34), but have two teachers per room so it does get loud and depending on the teachers seemingly unruly at times. Most inappropriate behavior is dealt with quickly by the principal. Main drawback is the lottery process becasue of so few spots.
Eagle Peak school is very good for kids who can work on their own. Can get very little help from Teachers, but they will learn more with the senior students mentor. Academic standards are very good. Students get more exposure to the future syllabus(next grade) once they are comfortable and performing above the average of the current grade. Only drawback is Eagle Peak has upto 5th Grade only.
My daughter is challenged there, unlike in her previous public school. She is developing great confidence. The school community is irreplaceable in terms of parent involvement, teacher commitment and the respect, both given to and earned by, the students. This is how all schools should be.
We love this school. As in all Montessori programs, the classrooms are multi-grades. Older students help younger and peers work together frequently. Two full time teachers are in every classroom, so someone is always available to answer questions. Each child is given multiple choice task lists for the week, and can complete their assignments in any order (generally six per day including math, language and cultural assignments). Art, music and P.E. are all offered at least once per week and the field trips have been fun and educational. Parents are asked to volunteer 40 hours per school year, including class and general hours (including gardening). Parent education is offered once a month and social activities are offered off-campus as well as on school grounds. My son is thriving at EPMS and is pushing himself to learn new things. He loves the extended care program and has made many friends.
Eagle Peak is a public charter Montessori school...an opportunity for children to get a quality Montessori education without the high cost of private school. The school is only 4 years old, and is still experiencing growing pains. The teachers and administrator do an amazing job, and the children learn in an authentic montessori atmosphere. There is a sorry lack of music, art, sports, and P.E., however, and I feel the school barely meets state standards in these areas, where their goal is to excel. I feel confident that with time and money, they will be able to grow in these areas as well. The school demands a very high level of parent involvement, and the results show. Parents are on campus and involved every day. It is a wonderful school, with a wonderful staff, which still needs some help in the extras.
I think the faculty try to hold true to the Montessori method of teaching and learning while trying to abide by California State Public School standards and regulations, which is a definite challenge. Sometimes I feel the faculty and staff are a bit unorganized, but I understand it is still a very young Charter school that has moved to a new facility. They have their work cut out for them! All in all, I am very happy with my boys experience at Eagle Peak Montessori Elementary School. They have learned a lot and have established good friendships with their classmates. In addition, it seems the faculty really try to understand my boys' strengths and weaknesses and use what they know to help emphasize the basics, as well as introduce new concepts.
We withdrew our son from this school after he spent a miserable 3 months in the first through 3rd grade classroom. First off, there are too many children per class- 37 in a room with 2 teachers. The high number of children creates a poor learning environment. Although the school is supposed to prepare an individual learning plan for each child early in the fall semester, none had been prepared in my son's class even as of late November. The teachers in my son's class took a hands off approach to discipline and social issues. Academically, despite the rhetoric, children are forced to work through the Montessori materials that they may already have mastered. I would avoid this school at all cost; there are many other school choices in this area.
