My child is in 1st .grade. So far we have had two incredible teachers in Kindergarten and First grade. Mr. Sarena and Miss Britton clearly love their job. It's wonderful when teachers like these really care about your child. We are very pleased with the progress so far. My only complaint is the school district's choice of what they call "every day" Math. It is not very challenging, but that's not the teachers' fault
Both of my daughters began at WLE in Kindergarten; one completed fifth grade while I transferred the other to a nearby charter school after 1st grade. I volunteered in the classroom every year and saw a lot of "teaching to the test," busywork, and little creativity or stimulation for the intellectually curious. While 75% of the teachers are good or excellent, they are hamstrung by the system. The CVUSD math curriculum known as "Everyday Math" is disorganized and goofy and the reading curriculum is not very interesting for advanced students. The child I transferred out was bored out of her mind as were the top students in her class. Children who thrive with structure and don't need much out of the box can do well here. The music programs are very good and the computer lab is fantastic. The PFA provides activities that are both fun for the kids and make the parent-donors feel good about the school. However, the 2007 comment here on excessive materialism of the parents is dead on and I noticed kids becoming more immersed in the ambient self-centeredness and materialism as they got older. That was sad to watch, but it's due to the parents and a community obsessed with appearances.
I have been impressed with the teachers personal touch in education. Everyone is so kind and willing to work with our kids. Its a great place to be!
Westlake Elementary School has a wonderful group of families, teachers and administrators who care about the welfare of the kids, school and community.
I love their focus on reading and mathematics. Just need more structure, disciplining and more homeworks and children safety. Overall it's a great school.
My son attended this school. Every aspect of this school was satisfying and a pleasure. Elementry school is part of my son's fondest memories that he likes to revisit ever so often and that in it self says a lot. Everyone of his teachers and Laura the family friendly Principle worked at making our 'star' a shining one. We love you Westlake Elementry!
My husband and I have never once regretted sending our daughter to Westlake Elementary. The Principal and Faculty are deeply committed to providing the students with a well-rounded education. The student body is diversified and the test scores can't be beat. Parent involvement is top notch which leads to a strong school/home connection. Westlake is a wonderful place to raise a family and Westlake Elementary is the hub of our little town. Education goes well beyond the four walls of the classroom. I whole-heartedly recommend this school, and look forward to the day that my toddler will be old enough to attend Westlake Elementary as well.
Westlake Elementary is a great school. The PFA funds music, art, science and computers. WLE has a full computer lab which is used by all grades. The parents are very involved in the school. There is no fundraising at WLE, rather the PFA asks for a $175 donation (less than $1/day) per student per year. The quality of the teachers, staff and principal are unprecedented and the academics are among the highest. WLE is an asset to the community and I am proud to be a parent at this school. Our children have numerous opportunities for education enrichment after-school in District approved programs/classes.
The quality is never lacking at this school, and neither is the thirst for it. The staff are pushed hard to produce good test scores to maintain the schools status. Whats lost is the spirit of learning snd growth, and what hangs in the balance is the schools integrity. The materialism of parents spoils what could be a positive environment. Its a public school with a very private school mentality. The children lack self-discipline and respect, and are taught how to consume daily, by the parade of Hummers, High-priced SUV's, designer clothing, and so much extra-curricular activity. I am left speechless about how a school with so much, can harvest so little. Its sad.
Great school. Staff is very helpful and the academics are among the best.
