This is an amazing dual language immersion school. We have a 6th grader and a 4th grader there now, and will start our daughter in kinder next year. None of our children knew Spanish before starting at Cali. Not only are they bilingual, they are also bi-literate. The teachers are fantastic and truly care about the students and their academic success. Keeping students aware of long-term achievement is a priority. We love Cali! It's been around for over 20 years and its program and methods have proven so successful! We are thrilled our children are able to attend this great school.

This truly is a great school. Some of the reasons parents and teachers are disappointed, might be because their child did not attend Cali starting in Kindergarten. If you are wanting to put your child in this school because your family is Latino or Mexican and you speak Spanish at home, I recommend not. This is a very good school if your child is willing to be successful and not settle for average. Some students might be upset because they are white and many of the students at this school aren't, but if you do feel this way, I hope that you can find somewhere where somebody isn't happy because of student's skin color. Although, if your child has gone to Cali for a while (such as me, I am a current sixth grader) and they feel like they are getting bored in class because they already know most of the stuff, switching schools might make your child happier. All in all, this school is amazing and the staff is very helpful. You can see students picking up trash, and when you ask them why, 80% of the time, you will hear "Because I want to make my school better". Plus, they can say it, in two languages. Do you think jobs are hard to get now? Think about when your child gets older...

IF you want you child to learn fluent spanish,then yes its a great school. IF your child (like me) is white (not to be racist),then this is a terrible school. Trust me, i already graduated from this school. I was bullied and tormented for being white. I was physically harmed just because the color of my skin. I was wanting to transfer out but couldn't. Sure SOME of the kids and teachers are nice, BUT IT WAS THE WORST 9 YEARS EVER.

This is a great school. A lot of diversity and emphases on academics. The teachers are tough, but understanding. If your smart you'd prepare your child for the future.

My child attended Cali from k through begining 6th grade. I pulled her out after 2 weeks in 6th grade and put her in the Windsor Middle school. Mistake. By 5th grade my child was not doing well and failing math. When I went to the school to for help and asked if we could put her in the after school program. I was told by the vice principal at the time (no longer there) that, quote ' they did not want to waste a space on my child'. He realized what he said and tried to take it back. Too late. I am not only a tax paying citizen I was also a home owner and my property taxes helped pay for that school. I had to pay a spanish math tutor to help my daughter pass 5th grade. Which she did with no help from Cali.

I currently have three children two neices and one nephew ranging in grades k-8 the education my children and neices have received at Cali is second to none, my eldest child came to Cali from an all English speaking campus and I have no regrets. The staff is great the volunteers are great and the kids on campus as a whole are great.

I am a former student of Cali. This school was the best experience that ever happened to me. Just the way you get to know your teachers, how theres not one kid in your class you don't know. It's just a wonderful place. It also developes a sense of belonging. You don't fully appreciate it until you graduate, then you think back and the great memories overwhelm you. I would suggest that you send your kids here instead of Mattie Washburn. My mother co-founded the school, and I see how it works internally. I have never seen such a devoted staff. They truly care about the education of the kids.

Cali Calmecac is the greatest place to send your child to. As a former student, I absolutely loved it. I can't express how many job opportunities have opened for me because of all my Spanish knowledge from Cali. Learning Spanish while you're young is so much easier then when you're older. I used to commute a hour to and from school, but it was worth every mile! Also, the teachers are awesome! They are so personal and you really feel like they want you to succeed. I never acquired a teacher that didn't love what they were teaching. Cali is the Greatest!

As a public school educator, I am concerned each time focus is placed on the results of mandated standardized tests. Cali is an excellent example of a school that is doing a superb job of educating ALL students. Their bilingual, biliterate program does more in the long run to 'level the playing field' and prepare their students for academic excellence than any other school I've heard of. We're happy to commute our daughter from out of town so she can recieve the outstanding education offered at Cali.

I agree with standardized testing. While Cali's test scores are low they are not indicative of the quality of education. The way children are taught paves the way for future learning. The fact that the children learn two languages and are immersed in a shared cultural experience greatly enhances their ability to learn, adapt and succeed in an ever shrinking world. I would like to see higher test scores, but not at the expense of what they now get. In a perfect world all kids would be above standard. Many, many children in conventional schools also fail to meet standards, and are no better for the experience. At the very least Cali students will be bi-lingual and be better prepared to succeed in a pluralistic society. I wholeheartedly recommend Cali Calmecac.

Where do I even begin on how Cali has helped me? Well I can say that Cali is the greatest schools in California, that's my opinion. The teachers try to connect with their students and try to make it feel like a second home. Learning two languages is the best thing ever because its easier to get a job or even learn a third language. Every chance I get I go back to Cali to say hi to teachers who have made a huge impact on my life. All in all Cali is a good school to send your kids to.

I am a freshmen in high school and i have college credits in spanish because of my many years in Cali. At Cali the teachers are like parents and the students are like siblings, so please, do the right thing and send your kid to Cali.

Cali is a great school both academically and socially....anyone that wants to become involved has that opportunity by either helping in classrooms for becoming part of the parent coucil called 'Partnership'...if there is any concern about state test scores, don't worry...your child will do fine...any low numbers are due to students that are still learning English and will improve in time or students that need extra help in assignments (RSP) but cannot get that help to do the state tests...if you want your child to have curriclum is challenging and creative, Cali is the place for you

I could not ask for a better school. I have a daughter that attends and is now in third grade. She is completely bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish at her grade level. The staff work with parents to help them feel involved in the education process. State scores are below average because of the enrollment of native Spanish-speaking students in the upper grades. They are new to the school (and usually the country) and are not proficient in English yet, which is how the tests are administered. However, students enrolled since kindergarten - whether from an English or Spanish background - test very well. I am very pleased with the school and would not hesitate to highly recommend it to anyone. CS

This is an Spanish imersion program. All students are taught in Spanish all day until third grade where English is taught 50%. My child has been to 2 other public schools (traditional) and we found this to be the best. My daughter is completely bilingual by age 7 1/2! We only speak English at home, however, our daughter can speak, read, and write in both English and Spanish at grade level. My youngest child will attend kindergarten next year. This is the best school for my children. I feel so lucky to have found it.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
