Simply love it!! The school supports the children and gives them an incredible twist on education. Ivy is an entrepreneurial focused independent charter school. They do grade level projects where all courses work together and create a finished assignment. As they grow in the school eventually they are creating projects and all core classes are inputing to the finished product. They will create a business and everything that goes with it from opening a checking account, business plan, create the product and eventually sell it to the students. They will pay taxes and balance their checkbooks. It's great!! I love the support and intention from the teachers and staff for successful, smart and educated students ready for the real world and working as a team.
Over 30 teachers left this year, director doesn't have a vision and can care less about students and staff. LAUSD needs to take a closer look! Good old Ivy is long gone!
I have both my kids in Ivy and it has been a fabulous experience so far. My eldest started at a regular public school and both of us hated it. So my belief is this is definitely better than a regular public school. The teachers are fantastic! I think the administration is doing the best they can, given the school site facilities provided (rather not provided!) by the LAUSD. I hope they will be able to secure good school premises soon and also keep the teachers on a non union basis. This school can arguably be the best charter school around if these 2 issues are taken care of.
Ivy Academia has seen better times and days. I believe if the administration really cares about the original vision for the school and about the future of the kids, they will immediately implement plans for renewal of the school, physically and otherwise. De Soto is disgustingly dirty. The administration is and always has been rude. They are always complaining and it's almost like they don't even like working with each other much less the being there for the students. Do not waste your time. Ivy is now a "has been". Should things change in the future, it may be a charter to once again consider. But as of today, it is a huge disapointment. How sad.
I'm a mother with a child that has been with Ivy since Kinder. Aesthetics=Disgusting, Education/Academics=Outstanding, Teachers=Outstanding, Staff=Average. Used to be if one child does not get the material, extra attention is provided for that child but the remaining class continues on (til our recent change of Directors who want TRADITIONAL LAUSD). Gone is the GATE Program also, the person that ran it has become "rough around the edges" and GATE is not available 'til 4th grade. Sunny Brae is disgusting but it's not because Administration but the fight with LAUSD. De Soto is no better. The strict budget does not provide for daily janitors and rely on parent volunteers. They keep the learning materials going and salaries. Sunny Brae (at one point) wouldn't let our kids use their restrooms and make them walk across to our campus? If you are looking for a "pretty school", this is not it. However, if you want your kids to excel and be in the 500's with CSTAR, this is the school. I'm personally still on the fence about WHES GATE/Ivy Academia. I know LAUSD will not correspond with me as well as my current teachers at Ivy but I can't stand seeing a GREAT school turn to LAUSD school.
Worst school EVER! Joke of an administration and even a bigger joke of a school! Bullies galore, inexperienced and unprofessional admin, who pretend they know what they are doing and/or talking about. Campuses are a cluttered fire hazard w too many children in cramped quarters with nowhere near enough ways out of buildings should the need arise. Butler, Gennaro, Lyons, Kelly (as named in another review) are the worst of the worst. Couldn't pull my children out of there FAST ENOUGH! Just becuase you put a uniform on children at a school can not mask the fact that scores are horrible and education here is atrocious! If this site allowed negative star ratings that would be perfect for Ivy. Don't just walk away from this school- RUN, RUN, RUN!
The music teacher at the Chatsworth campus is one of the worst teachers i have ever had. She turned in grades only twice. One for a project and another for our final test. That means all the classwork and extra credit i have done didn't count on my final. This teacher deserves to get fired. She ruined my GPA and my career as a musician this is why i am leaving this terrible school. The rest of the teachers were exceptional.
I just love Ivy Academia Today my Daughter celebrate from kinder and I am so pround and happy that my daughter is ready to be in first grade and I can't wait to meet the new teacher even though she will miss her present teacher, any how I just what to say I love Ivy Academia..
This is a nice school, but needs a lot of work. I had to remove my child due to lack of special needs support emotionally, physically and mentally. The support just wasn't there. My child loved going to school there, and loved being social, but the feeling was often not reciprocated, mostly by teachers. The bullying is out of control, no one saw my child get bullied and beat up because they are too busy talking among them selves on the playground. I don't know if it was always this way, but we had to get out of there before it made him have a negative feeling about school in general.
The administration at this school is a joke. I agree with the other mother! The school has a lot of bullying going on and the staff tries to brush it off as 'accidents". Their GATE program was the biggest joke of all. This school is all excuses and unfortunately the students are the ones who suffer. LAUSD should be ashamed of themselves. Lyons, Butler, Gennarro, Kelly- all of you need to make less excuses and think about the futures of these kids.
This school was a joke. I had my Son enrolled in Kindergarden this year and I pulled him out. It was very unorganized and he was learning nothing. It seemed more like a daycare / preschool rather than an actual Kindergarden. The Sunny Brae campus is run down and not well maintained. The other kids get to use the things that the Ivy students can't. Like the Library! My Son is doing much better now that he has changed schools. Thank god I took Him out when I did. I think this school was once good however I no long see it.
I love the school and my kids are very happy can't wait to go to school every day... love Ivy..
Really happy with how things are settling in. The 8th graders seem to be really thriving at the Chatsworth campus. My child loves it and i'm thrilled with his teachers. I love the small class size- 21 is much better than 40+ at other public schools. Pleasently surprised at the smooth transition.
On the first day i got there i had to do an entire manuscript from my history teacher. But overall it a great school, they have great cafeteria food that is actually fresh than the food that my other schools gave me, there school lunches are so oily and sossy.
My child has in Ivy Academia since 2nd grade, and i do not have any regrets. we have our ups and downs, but overall this is a GREAT school
My kid has been attending Ivy Academia for almost 4 years and we have great experience with his teachers at Sunny Brae. The transition to DeSoto this schoolyear is not that easy but thanks to some spectacular teachers like 7th Grade teacher, Mr. K who extends an extra mile to help students. He is not my child's teacher in any class but he was the ONE who helped us when nobody else seem to care. Thumbs up to the coaches who are friendly and helpful at round robin :)
Been here for 6 months so much better than the regular public schools. No teachers reading the newspapper here!
I taught at Ivy for one year, and from my personal experience, know why the turnover rate is so high. The administration failed to give me any support when it came to curriculum and discipline. I would constantly ask for help when discipling some of my students who were bullying on the yard, only to walk in and see a party going on when detention was supposed to be taking place. 99% of my students were AMAZING and I enjoyed every second with them. The administration, on the other hand, were very condescending. I always felt that I was being talked about behind my back and never knew who I could trust. That is not a healthy work environment to be a part of. I left because Ivy was not meeting MY standards as an educator.
Our family has been at Ivy Academia 4 years. We have had a wonderful experience. My kids enjoy going to school everyday and they are thriving socially and academically. The entrepreneurial focus is such a plus. Our teachers have been wonderful and are really great about communicating in a timely manner. The school overall seems to be more organized this year. The downside is the high rate of teacher turnover. Teacher quality is high, but they don't seem to stay very long....or, is it that they remove the ones who don't meet Ivy's standards? ONE LOCATION FOR K-8 would be a dream come true. Overall, very very satisfied.
Excellent school!!! better than a Public, Cheaper than a Private!!! Needs more parent involment and more Fundraising!!
