Come on parents and community lets vote for Calvert let's get the $5,000 for this great school
Calvert Street School always had caring teachers. I was the PTA Treasurer when my daughter attended in the 80's and 90's. I am so pleased that Calvert is now a charter school. More freedom on how allotted money is spent. I always felt sad that the kids had to play on that asphalt jungle. It would be well over 100 degrees even in the spring. My daughter went there before there was any air-conditioning, it was brutal in the classrooms. Congrats to all the great parents and staff for all these wonderful changes you have made.
Wow I cannot believe a review was posted by a neighbor whose children do not go there anymore. I am a parent and a volunteer who is out on the playground with multiple teachers and aides. Yes children do fight but there are people out there to regulate. If you truly had an issue why didn't you come into the office to express your concerns instead of posting on a school review site.
As a current Calvert Parent I would like to comment on the local residents assessment of playground activity and behavior. It is completely unfair to give this school two stars based off playground activity seen from outside the gates of Calvert. The principal, teachers and activity personnel take behavior seriously and have high, yet reasonable, standards for the children. They are children - they run, play, shout, disagree and yes, sometimes fight. But it's unfair to portray the school as if it doesn't care. Calvert is a very nice school, with a principal that is trying very hard to create a positive environment for the school. This school is growing and will be one of the top rated elementary schools in Woodland Hills within the next five years.
I am a proud Calvert parent. I have a daughter in 4th grade and another recent graduate that is now in seventh. I too live on Jumilla avenue and have seen the school's campus beautifully transformed from an asphalt heat island to an urban green space. I have participated in various projects that have included removing 150 cubic tons of asphalt, planting 200+ trees, built an outdoor classroom teaching garden and applauded when some very persistent parents created our grass field and running track through countless meetings and phone calls to the district. I am proud of the wood chips that my daughters and I have spread of the compost that we have hauled, and the second Saturdays we spend cleaning up the school. We have had great teachers every year. They are engaging and inspiring. Most of all my kids are happy and safe on campus. All the students are. It could easily be the happiest campus in LAUSD. They love going to school as much as they love going to the outdoor movie nights on the school lawn. We did this together, our community, for our children. Please go and volunteer at your own school now.
While I appreciate the above comments, as another Jumilla neighbor to Calvert, and current Calvert parent, I just want to add that the office at Calvert is always open to community support and welcomes your feedback. I encourage you to stop by and speak directly to the staff about your concerns. We have been at Calvert for eight years - between two kids - and see it getting better and better inside the classroom and out!
I have three children at this school. The eldest has gone from Kindergarten and is now in the 5th grade. Throughout our 6 years here we have found the teachers and staff to be dedicated and passionate. Our kids are thriving and learning and growing in a very positive nurturing environment. There are wonderful diverse families at this school who give a lot of time and energy to keep the school operating in a fun clean modern way. We are excited about the new science lab, the new computer lab, and all the new opportunities for the kids to learn and grow.
Calvert Charter is a great school. My children love going to school each day. They love their teachers and their teachers love them. The staff is all wonderful, from the Principal all the way down to the aids. Each and everyone one of them really care about the kids and getting to know them. Calvert is a great community school and it shows in how many parents know each other and spend their free time helping to make sure that the school is kept clean. There are so many wonderful things at this school. From computer labs(2), science lab, art room, and so much more. The PTA and staff really work hard to make sure all the kids are getting as much as they possibly can.
I really like the school became charter this year I hope it get better, And how they regularize the good of the children not just being bad.
My school is an amazing place. Nowadays with public education it is extremely hard to find a school that meets your child's needs. Calvert has become that for us. It is a school that has built a great community feel to it. Staff and parents work together and have created an environment that is safe and enriching for the students. I am very fortunate to have my children attending this school.
Calvert St. Elementary, which is now proudly called, Calvert Charter for Enriched Studies is by far the best elementary school in Woodland Hills, if not the entire West Valley (not that I'm partial or anything, of course not!) ;) Let me just say, this is our last year (we've reached the 5th grade point) and can barely stand the thought of that. It's going to be strange and sad to not be engaging with the incredible teachers and staff on a daily basis. Calvert is like family, Calvert is our community! We will surely miss it!
My daughter's first day at Calvert was on August 13th and she entered 3rd grade. The previous 3 years were spent at a high priced private school. My husband and I are beyond thrilled about our decision to make this move! Our daughter has never been so happy and positive about school. The Principal Mr. N is enthusiastic, hands on and exceptional. At each Friday morning Assembly he recognizes between 15-20 students that he "catches being good". He states what the good deed was and the value that it exemplified. Just in this early stage my daughter is learning more about values then ever. She noticed that a girl in her class was always alone at recess and it really bothered her so she invited the girl to play tag with her and told me she made a special point to say that the girl could ALWAYS play with her and her friends. This says so much about the school environment and the safety she feels in taking risks and being a good person. As for academics, her teacher Judy Falzone is excellent. My daughter has told me how good Mrs. Falzone is at explaining concepts to her in a way that she understands. If it sounds like I couldn't be happier its because really, I couldn't!
I have a 3rd grade boy and kindergarten boy in Calvert. I enjoy this school because it is a true school that cares about the kids. From the PTA to the teachers to the Principle and office staff. If you want a school that wants the best for your child this school is it. School programs cut by budget is replaced by the PTA fundraising. Parents and teachers working on a saturday once a month to make our school looking nice. My 3rd grader have made good friends. This school I feel is the prime example of what other elementary schools should be.
Calvert El is a great school it's diversity is what makes it unique. We come together as one community to support our children and most of the events in order to collect funds and keep PE going and other activities. People are very friendly the Staff is wonderful, the principal is very supportive. There have been improvements to the school but we need to keep it going.
We just started here and already we can see it is a great school. My kids come home very happy and are learning something new every day
So excited to be a part of Calvert Charter for Enriched Studies! My son just started kindergarten and he's very happy here. It's a great community school.
After spending a year interacting with the principal and some of the "leaders" of the groups on campus. I will not be returning. I tried to address real concerns for my daughter with the principal regarding the fact that teachers kept changing in her class. He never answered any of my questions, yet instead accused me of being sarcastic and rude. Also I believe if you are going to have 4year olds on your campus (preK program) , you should also have extra curricular activities for those children. While we lucked out with the permanent sub. I refuse to reenroll my child in this school. Our family tried to volunteer many times at the school but only ended up frustrated by the lack of organization or the want by the school to include the younger children.
My daughter went to this school in second grade, but for third grade she went to another elementary school that is considered "better rated" in the area because we had moved into that school's area. Believe me, Calvert is the best elementary school in the WH district! Our experience was so negative at the other school, staff was cold and unapproachable. A year has passed since our daughter attended Calvert and staff still remember my daughter and our family. She is doing much better academically because she is happy and loves school again. The staff at Calvert really care about your child's success and happiness, not just concerned with their "image" and "ratings". It is so great to see our daughter in love with school again! I would recommend Calvert to anyone who wants BOTH happiness and acedemic success for their child!
I first came to Calvert when my niece and nephew went here 3 years prior to my son starting kinder. I loved the diversity. The office staff is amazing they know every child by name. The entire staff on site is amazing! They treat the kids as if they were their own.The new principal is great. He wants our kids to be safe and to know that they are safe when they are left in the Calvert staffs care. He deals with behavior quickly and fairly. The teachers are wonderful. All of my sons teachers were great. There is one that he's had since Kinder and for 3 and now 5th. This teacher has taught my son more than state standards. Calvert teachers not only teach the state standards but they teach the children about respect and about caring for your community. Calvert children know what the word community really means. Calvert fights for the arts to remain at the school even with the budget. They have fun educational field trips, a wonderful vegtable garden, a huge grass field, lots of trees, and they are finishing up a pond. Calvert is truly a community school it's small but not too small.
What can I say? Calvert is a wonderful neighborhood school that makes parents and children feel at home. We have been at Calvert for 6 years now and unfortunately it is time to say goodbye... Most of the teachers are great! We were very very lucky.. We had the best and it's sad to say bah bye to my Calvert family. There's a very special teacher there that truly gets to know each and every single one of his students. You know who you are and I can never THANK YOU enough for teaching my son for 3 of the 6 years he was at Calvert.. We started with you and I am truly thankful that we are ending our years at Calvert with you! You knew how to motivate him and all your students... LAUSD needs more teachers like that. Overall our experience at Calvert was GREAT! Loved the staff, the parents that were there to help with PTA and other activities. I am going to miss your faces. Calvert has been our home away from home for the last 6 years... If you want that small school feel... Calvert is the place!! :)
