With the exception of a very few good teachers, this is not a good school at all. Too much bullying by students and by the staff.

I think school experience largely depends on the teacher. I have had experience with two teachers since we've started going to this school. The teachers are caring and kids like them. Some teachers are more organized in their daily routines, some less. That also depends on the amount of parent involvement and volunteering. My kids like going to this school. There is no perfect school that satisfies every parent's and child's expectations and wishes. Overall, I am satisfied with this school. As far as some of the complaints about administrative staff in other posts, I can say that I have only had positive experiences. They have been courteous and responsive to my questions and needs. The principal has been responsive to emails that I have sent as well.

I am counting the days that my kid will be finished at this school. The administrative staff is not a big proponent for the kids - it is all very political and evasive. The only capable and rational individual in this school is the Assistant Principal. The majority of the teachers are apathetic and disorganized. My kid is autistic, and I've seen her development slip backwards due to the poor care and poor education that is provided in this school. I have even been made aware by other students that she's been yelled at. It's simply not a good environment at this school.

Lockhurst is a great school! We have been here for 5 years and I love it. My son is happy to go to school everyday and I believe he is getting a quality education. The student body is diverse and the children behave well for the most part. I feel like my child is in good hands at the school and that he is safe from violence and harassment. The principal is tough with the kids, but I believe her intentions are good and that a firm hand is needed to ensure the safety of all children. Through our very involved PTSA our school has been able to maintain PE, computer, and music programs which have been cut in many schools. The grounds are clean with plenty of play area for the children and the pre-k and kinder children stay on their own area of the campus away from the older students. There are lots of after school activities to keep the children busy and fulfilled. The community atmosphere is great and there is a large group of very involved parents that make sure activities and fundraising go on. The teachers are also great! I would recommend Lockhurst to anyone.

So far, NOT impressed. From orientation on this school has been nothing but contradictory in what new students should do. Can't settle on proper drop off/pick up for kindergarten students. This morning the kindergarten yard was TOTALLY unsupervised during the entire drop off period. Informed my son's class aide, she denied it, and then said, "she'd make a note of it"

This school is 2 thumbs up!!! You always feel that your child is safe, respected and is always learning. I have 2 children at this school one with special needs and one without, but the are both treated the same by the teachers, staff and parents. The Ptsa are some of the most hard working and dedicated parents I have met. I always feel that my voice is heard and welcomed. The campus always has a welcoming and warm vibe to it. Lockhurst has the right class no matter what your childs ability is from special needs to gifted you can find it all on one campus.

This school is awesome! The community of teachers, parents and children are just amazing. The parents are very down to earth and friendly. I have 3 children at the school in grades 1-4, all of them highly gifted. I have had opportunities to go elsewhere, but I would not consider it! My children are taken care of not only academically, but emotionally as well. The teachers and parents and community are all united to help all of our children. The unique all inclusive approach that combines rigorous academics with a universally accessible curriculum enriches my children's brains and hearts. As a teacher of almost 20 years myself, I have never seen such a cohesive and motivated faculty. After my first year at the school, I was welcomed into the parent community with open arms. I now have many personal friends from the school as well as a large and local support group. I HIGHLY recommend this school, no matter what your family is looking for!!!

this school is highly over-rated. the teachers clearly have their hands tied from lack of proper management. the lack of oversight and accountability is due in part to parents' attitudes. lack of concern, wreckless behavior that when politely corrected gets attacked, rudeness and a general "do not care" attitude are pervasive in most parents there. this affects the management's ability to lead the school and clearly there is a reason why they needed to get a magnet school onto the campus - due to low enrollment numbers. people are voting with their feet - elsewhere. a highly over-rated school. my son and i are leaving. you would be wise to ask yourself why they need a magnet school just to keep their doors open. that shows there is something wrong - deeper than surface level at this school.

Lockhurst ElementarySchool has a dedicated administrative and instructional staff that goes above and beyond. They provide the best school environment possible.Children with special needs are welcomed with open arms by everyone and are part of the group. The gifted (GATE) program is awesome. My child learned to read and write challenging material at a young age because of Lockhurst's Academic program. The parent volunteers work very hard at fundraising to try and bring activities back to the school that would normally go by the wayside due to ongoing school district budget cuts. This is the best educational foundation for my daughter that I could ever ask for. My daughter has received the very best tools of knowledge to move forward in her life thanks to Lockhurst Elementary School. 5 Stars***** Way to Go Lockhurst Where Caring Truly Does Happen!

Loving, caring environment. My son with special needs is welcomed with open arms. He has typical friends that endure his space issues and behavioral issues with grace and kindness. The campus is clean. The PTSA is always striving to bring programs to the school that are lacking because of decreasing funds, like art, music, computer and extras that you normally wouldn't get without a great PTSA. We have a large special needs population that rocks everyones world and reminds everyone that everyone has to be accepted and loved. They also get to learn firsthand that these kiddos are bright and worthwhile to have as friends.

I love Lockhurst because of the welcoming attitude and understanding the families involved at the school have to children with special needs. I love how the 4th and 5th graders help the younger children who have difficulty communicating, often who don't speak at all, empathize and accept them just the way they are. When a child with autism is having a bad day, perhaps with some screaming, most other students will either ask if they can help or shrug their shoulders in acceptance of the reality. We wish many adults could be this forgiving.

I have 2 children who went to Lockhurst. It is a great school, great administrative staff, wonderful teachers and A VERY involved PTSA. All the teachers my children had were very open and receptive with my family. I'm sorry certain parents feel the PTSAA is an elitist group as the door is always open. We constantly court parents, but again, its the same 10-15 parents who show up, which is a shame for a school of over 450 children. When I first starting attending PTSA meetings, I didn't know any of the active members, but soon became friendly and saw how hard they work to make Lockhurst a great school. Go to a meeting, get involved - become a part of this ELITE group and see how much you can add to your child's education.

My son has been at Lockhurst for 5 years. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. The principal's positive attitude and good sense have done wonders for this school, even though the parents are accustomed to badmouthing everything. A positive attitude adopted by the parents could go far here! The parents from this school present as quite spoiled and insincere and this attitude filters right down to the disrespectful behavior of the kids. The PTSA is not inviting, due to the elitist nature of the parents. The office staff are not inviting and for the most part do not want to be bothered. The best thing the school has to offer are the incredibly caring Special Education teachers, a few sincerely dedicated parents, a great after school enrichment program with a lot of variety in classes, an inviting campus, and an outstanding library and librarian.

I am completely floored by the parents who say this is a great school. Their standards must be a whole lot lower than mine. The office staff could not be less friendly or unhelpful. The principle is one of the most insincere, disingenuous people I've ever met. The kids are so ill-behaved and unmotivated that barely any learning takes place and they create a completely inhospitable environment for the few kids who do want to learn. I do like my kids' teachers and feel that they have a real passion for teaching. They'd do great teaching kids that came to school ready and willing to learn. Also, I second the review of the parent who took her child out do to lack of a GATE program. There is none.

I love Lockhurst. My son loves going to school. His teachers are amazing... professional, bright, energetic, compassionate, enthusiastic about teaching and profoundly dedicated! The office staff is organized, warm and friendly. The principal and assistant principal have a wonderful rapport with their teachers. I witness this first hand while at the 'Teacher Appreciation Luncheon' that the PTA hosted for the teachers and staff. The women on the PTA are 'On The Ball' and it has been my pleasure to be apart of their team this pass year. In short, I will simply say Lockhurst is an exceptional school and genuinely well rounded!

I have a child who has attended Lockhurst for three-years now. He loves his teachers and is always very much excited to go to class every day. He enjoys going to class so much this year that he would like for school to be open on weekends! Although, I am a member I have not been able to attend the PTA meetings, but I hope to be able to this year. :)

All my children attend Lockhurst Elementary. My experience has been excellent with the teachers, and have found that they are open to working with the parents to ensure each and every child's needs are understood and valued. I have had not as fruitful experiences with the new principal and find her to be unavailable and not particularly receptive to any feedback from the parents. It is often frustrating, and I have found that the best way to make impact or address potential needed change is through the PTA.

We were surprised when we brought our son from an expensive Montessori school (2 yrs) for 1st grade, & were told that he was actually behind. You don't always get what you pay for. Some private schools seem to have some catching up to do since the CA state standards were implemented. Lockhurst's scores have improved dramatically. In general, we have been very satisfied with our son's progress. His test scores and his and our satisfaction with the educational process have improved, although not always consistently. It seemed like every other year we got a 'good' teacher, then every other year a 'great' one. We also noticed that it seems that if you stay active in parent groups (which are very busy and pretty successful), that your kids often 'seem' to get the best teachers. After-school programs are thin (Youth Svcs, etc), probably because of district funding issues.
